The following is my first book review on The Soul of C.S. Lewis by Wayne Martindale, Jerry Root, and Linda Washington
First, let me start by saying how excited I am to be writing this review on behalf of Tyndale House Publishers. Upon visiting their site, I knew this was the perfect book for me. I really did not know very much about C.S. Lewis outside of The Chronicles of Narnia and his testimony. I wanted to gain a better understanding of his work and to see how he paralleled Christianity throughout his stories. From the moment I opened this book, I could not put it down. I could not wait to see what new insight the authors would bring to this man of God and what he offered his readers.
When they note this to be a meditative journey, they mean just that. It is set up somewhat like a devotional, so you can actually read a section at a time and reflect upon it. Each section outlines different areas of his work—starting with Pilgrimage on through Words of Grace. My main interest was in The Chronicles of Narnia which proved to teach me a great lesson. Before reading this material, I had trouble understanding how stories like these were truly Christian in nature. Though I had not seen the movies, my family had; I dismissed them as sorcery and discounted their validity.
I could see Lewis was a Christian but simply did not agree with his method in reaching others through this type of writing. My first journey into the books with The Voyage of the Dawn Treader quickly changed this view. As soon as you turn the page, you recognize his heart and purpose. The story of Eustace’s transformation from the heart of a dragon is vividly brought to life through his becoming a real dragon in Narnia with Aslan (the Christ figure) alone, being the very one to scrape away the layers of his flesh. It then moves you from test to testimony as he shares his experience with Edmund. What a beautiful picture of submission and humility. Needless to say, I have now seen the movies and hope to see this on film as well. . . .

"The Soul of C.S. Lewis: A Meditative Journey through Twenty-Six of His Best-Loved Writings" by Wayne Martindale, Jerry Root, and Linda Washington is a beautiful celebration of C.S. Lewis’ genius. The book highlights 26 of Lewis’ works and provides meditative reflections on them.
The book is divided into four spiritual themes of Lewis’ writings. Then 6 or 7 different works of Lewis are used to illustrate each theme. Each chapter covers one of Lewis’ books and gives a brief introduction to it. 10 meditative readings follow that expound upon a quote from that work.
As I have read many of Lewis’ fictional works, I was pleased to find that all the Narnian books are included, as are his three Space Trilogy books. While most of the book is not written by Lewis, the writing reflects his work. The authors also take time to assess Lewis’ legacy and significance and explain why these reflective readings are something Lewis himself would approve of.
The book oozes of Lewis and promises to be an enjoyable read. Students of Lewis will devour this book, and those who appreciate his genius are sure to likewise be enthralled. The beautiful cover of the book and the decorative art throughout add to the overall splendor of this work. It would make a perfect gift this holiday season. I highly recommend it.

Fiecare incursiune in cartile scrise de CS Lewis nu este usoara. O colectie de pasaje apartinand celor mai cunoscute scrieri ce apartin filosofului englez a reprezentat o delectare; de accea am gustat lectura fara graba.
Cartea poate fi definita nu doar ca o compilatie din scrierile autorului englez ci si o combinatie de stiluri putand fi parcursa fie ca o carte biografica, fie ca un devotional, fie ca un volum critic al operei lui Lewis. Scrisa si sub forma unei carti devotionale/de meditatii, materialul dens al operei lui Lewis este mai usor de parcurs si intrepatruns.
Wayne Martindale, Jerry Root si Linda Washington conduc cititorul prin 26 din cele mai cunoscute scrieri ale lui CS Lewis prezentand teme spirituale ce apar in opera filosofului englez. In introducere autorii isi definesc un scop al scrierii lor: doresc sa transmita nu doar idei despre operea lui C.S. Lewis ci sa-i ajute pe cititori sa observe intrepatruderea si legatura ce exista intre Cuvantul divin si viata umana.

In The Soul of C.S. Lewis, Martindale, Root, and Washington shepherd the reader through twenty-six of Lewis’ works in an attempt to take a deeper look at his key spiritual themes not only for devotional purposes but also to gain a clearer understanding and appreciation for Lewis himself. As someone that was only familiar with about half of the twenty-six fiction and non-fiction writings covered in this book, I enjoyed having more exposure to the breadth of Lewis’ work in such a condensed, targeted, and curated format.
The book is broken down into four main sections; Pilgrimage, Temptation and Triumph, Going Deeper, and Words of Grace. Each section is reinforced by multiple chapters with each chapter introduced with a summary followed by ten quotations from one of Lewis’ books and ten associated reflections. Each reflection ends with a Scripture verse that affirms the spiritual theme highlighted in the chapter.
In their introduction to the book, the authors say that “the purpose of The Soul of C.S. Lewis is to encourage reflection and thought.” The reflection and thought they encourage with this book includes not only reflecting and thinking about Lewis and his works but also about the interconnectedness of scripture and life. To that end, I have found this to be an enjoyable reference and devotional read.

Being a fan of the works of C.S. Lewis, I was drawn towards this book. "A meditative journey through twenty-six of his best-loved writings" (so says the subtitle), it is part biography, part Cliff's notes, and part devotional. It is a great book to have alongside one of Lewis's great works, to learn more about the man, his theology, the apologetics he conveys through his writing, and the scripture behind his ideas. C.S. Lewis was a genius and this book celebrates not only his life, but his biblical theology. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading it many times over. All of my children will be introduced to The Soul of C. S. Lewis when they are ready for his works. If you want to know more about C.S. Lewis, understand his writings more fully, or are seeking spiritual growth, I recommend this book.I received this book from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for this review.
