This book is indeed a book to be read by all. It deals with issues at the core of all human existence and from the day I started reading up until now in Day 32, my life has being steering in the right course. I now view life on earth with eternity in mind. Something I never was conscious about before. I am also sharing with as many people I know about the book and how much it is blessing my life . I also bought a copy for my Sister and her husband and look forward to opportunities in impacting as many lives as possible with the information am getting from the book.

I received this book at the end of last year in time for the 10-year anniversary of the original printing of The Purpose Driven Life. I was really excited as I had never read this book, and my church had just completed a church-wide small group Bible Study by Rick Warren. The content is virtually the same, but it offers some new twists for today's technologically savvy generations. Each chapter has a QR code that will take the reader to a video introduction and an audio Bible Study to be done at the end of the chapter. There are also two new chapters addressing the most common barriers to a purpose driven life. The reader can also connect to other readers through access to an online community, where you can discuss your journey and receive feedback and support. I confess, I did not try the QR codes for all 42 chapters, but for the chapters I did try, everything seemed to work just fine and the recordings were clear and easy to understand. I will also say that reading a book for review purposes and reading it for an actual personal study experience are two separate things. When you're reading for review purposes, it is easy to read straight through areas that would normally speak to you and not let the words sink in and register within your spirit. I have put this on my list for my devotion rotation so I can go back through it looking for the truth God wants to share.I would encourage those looking for a direction in their lives to read this book with an open mind. It's written in such a way that anyone will get direction from it whether they are in high school, college, middle age, or retired.

This was the first book I picked up that did an excellent job of not only explaining different aspects of Christianity and what it meant to be a "Christian," but also focused on so many of the questions I wanted answers to. It was an incredible feeling and I loved every part of that book, reading it several times over the course of the next couple of years.
It's been 10 years since The Purpose Driven Life was published and it's being re-released for the anniversary in a beautiful hardcover edition. This new edition has two added chapters. There's also web links and access to an 30 minute audio message from the author, which was great to listen to.

It's hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Rick Warren's classic, The Purpose Driven Life was released nationwide and caught the attention of churchgoers as well people outside the church. This book has been called, "The Nation's bestselling non-fiction hardback in history" (Publisher's Weekly). Many churches have done studies on this book for the last decade. Some have even done the 40 days of purpose where they read a chapter of the book everyday until they have finished the book. Pastors have even built sermons around the theme of the week that is addressed in the book.
I know I have read this book, only because everyone else seems to be talking about it. I lent it out to several people and now I am not even sure where it is. So when the opportunity was given to me to review this book in its 10th anniversary edition, I had to take it because I know what I believed 10 years ago is a lot different than the theology I have now.
When coming across a book like this, one has to wonder if this is another "Christian" self-help book. Warren wrote in the beginning of the book, that this is not a self-help book. In fact, he writes, "It's not about you...You were born by his purpose and for his purpose" (pg. 21). Okay, we know this book is not a self-centered book, which can gives us some comfort.
What makes this book different than its previous editions is instead of 40 days, it has been expanded to 42 where there are 6 six weeks of "study" to go over. The first week deals with the purpose that we are here for. Talking about it all starting with God and that we were made for an assignment here on earth which sounds like Henry Blackaby's Experiencing God.
The remaining six weeks consist of the five-fold purpose of what God created us for:
You were planned for God's pleasure (Worship)
You were formed for God's family (Fellowship)
You were created to become like Christ (Discipleship)
You were shaped for serving God (Service)
You were made for a mission (Evangelism)
To some of you this may sound familiar because he also addressed these same purposes, in a different way, in his other classic, The Purpose Driven Church, which can out years before Purpose Driven Life.
I know Rick Warren is not the most glorious expositor preacher in the church nor one for making deep theological comments, but there were a lot of things in the book that I agreed with and a lot of things I did not. He knows the gospel and loves Jesus and wants to see people live for their lives to honor God. That is, and should be, the heart of any pastor regardless of what school of theology we are under.
My big concern for the book is the treatment of Scripture. Warren uses the Bible through the book which is a good thing. However, Warren hardly gives the Scripture reference in the book, you have to look in the back for the reference, which is why it can be labeled a study book. That is a minor issue. The major issue is the variety of translations. Yes, we need to use different translations at times, but the way Warren uses it seem to fit what he says. It seems he is one of those guys who let has a thought about God and then uses it to reinforce it without careful hermeneutics. I think what Warren does is a very sloppy approach to the Bible and a pastor should be the last person on earth to treat the word with such contempt.
I am not saying The Purpose Driven Life is a bad book nor a great book. It is one of those book all church leaders need to read because your people will be reading it or already have.

The Purpose Driven Life expanded edition by Rick Warren is a guide for a 42 day spiritual reflection upon your life and discovery of your purpose for living this life. Mr. Warren is the pastor at Saddleback Church in California. He takes the reader through this journey of life’s purpose in 42 days. It is suggested in the first few pages not to try to read/study this book any quicker because as explained in the beginning of the book the Bible considers 40 days a spiritually significant time period. God would ask each person in the Bible to spend 40 days to prepare oneself for a new purpose. Mr. Warren asks the reader to do the same. There are scriptural passages to also read in the guide in the back of the book as well as messages to listen to online. The day’s devotion can be spent in as little as 15 minutes to get the day’s message or more in-depth time can be spent using all the resources provided. It is also suggested that the scriptures should be read in various differ translations or paraphrases. Each chapter also begins with a QR code which can be scanned with your smartphone so that you can listen to a 3 minute video for the chapter. This is an easy to understand new version of the book released 10 years ago which incorporates the newer technology available to most people today. This is a book that can be read by oneself for self reflection by yourself but it is suggested that more can be gleaned when read for a group discussion/devotional study.
I enjoyed this book much more than I expected to. I was surprised at how this book could direct me on a more fulfilling pathway to God and understanding my purpose without being preachy. Mr. Warren writes in an upbeat way without being wishy-washy which I appreciated. I plan to reread this book slower as the writer intended in a group setting with a small group study. I had not read the first book so I cannot say whether the changes made the book better but I can say that this book has improved my philosophy on life. Thank you for taking the time, Mr. Warren, in updating your popular book.

It's been ten years since I first read The Purpose Driven Life --along with most people both in and out of the Christian community. Picking up this anniversary edition was like visiting a familiar friend and reminiscing. I was struck anew by the scope of the book. It's truly a foundational work, covering what we're here on this earth for, how to foster spiritual growth, how to function within the church body and how to discover and fulfill God's ultimate purposes for our life.
Warren specifically instructs the reader to move through the book slowly, preferably over the course of 40 days. The anniversary edition includes two bonus chapters covering the most common traps to living a purpose-filled life. So, I tried to move slowly and take time with the reading.
There were moments I was tempted to skim simply because I have read the book before and completed the 40 Days of Purpose study with my church. I would begin to feel like the lessons were "old-hat" and yet I was reminded by taking it slow that sometimes the foundational lessons are the ones we must return to again and again.
Additionally, the updated edition includes many multimedia tools to expand the impact of the lessons with handy QR codes, including audio and video lessons from Rick Warren for each chapter.
The impact of this book speaks to a widespread desire to discover God's purposes for our lives. Clearly most of us long for an answer to this question considering how many people were drawn to read The Purpose Driven Life in the first place. Warren emphasizes, though, that we are truly here to glorify Him and to work with other Christians to fulfill God's plan for us as individuals and as a Church.
If it's been ten years since you read the book, maybe now would be a great time to read it again. It's also updated and interactive, which might appeal to a whole new generation of folks asking, "What am I here for?"

I love everything Pastor Rick Warren preaches and writes about. He has a brilliant way of breaking things down and making difficult concepts easy to understand. He keeps your interest and he is never boring.
The anniversary edition of "The Purpose Driven Life" is even better. There are two new chapters added: "The Envy Trap - I must be like you to be happy" and "The People-Pleaser Trap - I must be liked by you to be happy".
What I also think is a wonderful addition, are the QR codes and web links incorporated providing a video intro and 30-minute audio message by Pastor Rick Warren for each chapter.
If you are not familiar with Pastor Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life is a great introduction. This is one of my favorite books ever. I highly recommend it to everyone.
I have received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Zondervan and Thomas Nelson.

The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren is a devotional book that takes you on a forty two day journey with God. Over 30 Million copies have been sold and it has been labeled as the Bestselling Non-Fiction Hardback in History. The book addresses the thought provoking question: What on Earth Am I Here For? Then it answers the question by breaking it down and discussing five purposes or reasons why God created us and put us here on this earth. 1. You were planned for God’s pleasure. 2. You were formed for God’s family. 3. You were created to become like Christ. 4. You were shaped for serving God. 5. You were made for a Mission. Understanding our purpose gives meaning to our life, increases motivation, gives focus to life, and prepares us for eternity. Each day there was a scripture, Questions to Consider and Points to Ponder. Each day also contained QR Codes that link to 42 exclusive vides that discuss the Devotional for the day. This makes it really easy to listen using your Smart phone. There are also 42 audio messages that are related to each chapter. There are also discussion questions so this book can be used in a small group Bible Study.
This book really helped me in my walk with God. I loved the chapter What makes God Smile. God wants to have a two way relationship with us throughout the whole day. This book inspired me to renew my commitment to talk to God throughout my day, not just at the beginning and the end. I did notice that the author disagreed with what the Bible has to say about what happens after you die. The author talks about going to heaven immediately when you die. Ec. 9:5 says that the “Dead do not know anything.” They are asleep until Jesus comes. Then the dead will be raised when Jesus comes back to this earth to take us to heaven. (See 1 Thes. 4:13-17)

Summary
Have you ever wondered why you are here, why God created you the way He did, in the place you are at, among the people that surround you? Have you ever felt like you were made for something, but couldn’t put a handle on what, why, or how? Have you ever struggled with depression, doubt and self-worth? We all have and Pastor Rick Warren’s book “The Purpose Driven Life” has helped millions of people find answers to those questions with Christ-focused precision, wisdom, sensitivity, and Biblical conviction.
Some Statistics
“The Purpose Driven Life” is the best selling non-fiction hardback of all time. It has sold 32 million copies, been translated into 50 languages and people from 162 different countries have studied it. It was number one on all four major US booksellers lists in 2002 (and then made history by doing it again in March 2005 after hostage Ashley Smith persuaded a captor to release her by reading portions of it) and won the 2003 and 2004 ECPA Christian Book of the Year. (Stats taken from the news release by A. Larry Ross Communications which accompanied the copy of the book I received)
My Bias
As soon as I saw this book come up on the list of options for me to review I jumped at it. Partially because I wanted to see the updated version, but mostly because it is a perfect excuse to once again recommend and sing the praises of a book that has touched my life so deeply.
I have appreciated Rick Warren’s ministry for a long time, ever since I was first introduced to him through this book 10 years ago. Though we have never met, he has blessed me personally, developed me spiritually, and equipped my ministry many times over. So yes, I’m a fan, and I couldn’t wait to get this book. It is the only book in my library of which I have extra copies to give away. I’ve read it cover to cover multiple times, taught it in small groups, and continuously pull it off the shelf to read portions of again. I can’t think of another book, outside of the Bible, that God has used to shape me more.
Why Another Version?
When it came up in the review list my first thought was “It’s been 10 years already? Wow, I’m old.” My next thought was, “I wonder why they are releasing this again? Hasn’t everyone read it by now? Isn’t it still in every book store in the world?” My questions were answered by Pastor Rick on page 15 of the book where he says,
“Recently a 22-year-old named Mark connected with me through social media and asked ‘How do I know what my purpose in life is?’ As we chatted, I learned that his parents had read this book, but he had not read it, since he was only 12 years old when it was published. Every new generation must rediscover God’s purposes for themselves.”
“Aha!”, I thought, “That makes so much sense!” I remember how much this book impacted me when I was 24, and I’m glad that I have a new version of this book to pass along.
Review
The first impression I had of the new “The Purpose Driven Life: Expanded Edition” was how beautifully crafted, designed, printed and organized it is. It is a very beautiful book, just to look at. It is not only gorgeous, but savvy — this is how books should be written in the 21st century. Each day has a special QR code (specially designed pictures which a smart-phone can use to access a website) which link to short introductory videos, audio sermons (a full hour sermon for every day!), special notes and an online support community.
Originally this book had 40 days, but this new version has 42. Pastor Rick has added two days [the Envy Trap (“I must be like you to be happy”) and the People-Pleaser Trap (“I must be liked by you to be happy”)] which are meant to combat what he calls “two giant problems or traps that keep most people from living the life God planned for them to live.” (quoted from the day 41 video introduction). These two chapters alone are worth the price of the book.
This is still a great book, and the new additions make it even better.
Conclusion
The one word I would use to describe this book is — “potent“. Each day is full of wisdom, biblical insight, pastoral love, practical help and critical information that will help you move closer to Jesus and bring more joy into your life. There are literally paragraphs within this book that will change your life. There are phrases within this book that you will carry with you forever. If you let it, God can use this book to help you live out His purpose for you.
If you haven’t read this book, get it and read it. If you’ve already read it, it’s time to read it again.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of “The Purpose Driven Life”, Zondervan has re-released the best-selling book in an expanded version called “What On Earth Am I Here For?”. Selling more than 32 million copies worldwide, “The Purpose Driven Life” has been transforming lives of people all over the world.
Ten years ago, Rick Warren became a household name for Christians all over the United States. His small group format became all the rage among Christian pastors and authors and “The 40 Days of Purpose” took small groups and classes to a deeper level.
The expanded version includes two additional chapters addressing “The Envy Trap—I must be like you to be happy” and “The People-Pleaser Trap—I must be liked by you to be happy.” He is hoping for a new generation of readers to be among those whose lives were transformed by the first book.
With the inclusion of the new chapters as well as the QR codes at the beginning of each chapter that link to 42 three-minute videos featuring Warren, it is now possible for a deeper study and understanding of what the purpose-driven life is all about.
Beginning Warren’s study on your life’s purpose is a great way to start 2013. If you participated in the study 10 years ago, it might be time for a refresher. If you have never heard of this study and are searching for God’s purpose for you, with this expanded version, it’s the perfect time to start.

It’s been 10 years already? Yes, it has, and in that time another generation has grown up and is asking what life is all about. So it’s time for an updated edition of this book.
The first thing I noticed when I received this book was the crisp clean design for the dust jacket. Much nicer, cleaner look than the earlier edition. Inside there’s a new font, paper and page setup. Then there’s those nifty little QR links. Yes, I did check them and they work just fine, as did the other links related to this study. It’s all free, too. Except the book, of course. There are even listening guides to download if you want to follow along with the discussion that accompanies each week’s focus. So far I am impressed with this anniversary edition.
The original text was maintained here with the addition of a couple of new chapters at the end. Those two chapters are helpful. They cover a couple of the major pitfalls that most of us know all too well, envy and people-pleasing. As with the rest of this study, Warren covers these topics well too, in my opinion.
The general topic, “What on earth am I here for?”, covers a huge territory, but the author has approached it well and presents enough material so that by the time a person is finished with this study he’ll have enough information and encouragement to examine his own life and formulate some plans that he’d liked to see accomplished in his own life. The student will also have a better idea of his own place in the grand scheme of things.
As I read through this book, I realized that those of us who have already been through the study could benefit from a refresher course, too. So this new edition isn’t just for the younger generation. Maybe a checkup to see how we are doing with our lives?
Yes, I recommend this book. Do I agree with every word? No, and that isn’t the point. Direction, focus, and a sense of my place in the world is. Warren has a book that makes you look and decide for yourself about those issues.
This book was provided by Zondervan in exchange for this review in conjunction with BookSneeze.
