An exceptional book... unbolts closed minds that heretofore have been, albeit innocently, indoctrinated with the image of a gentile Jesus who possesses absolutely no resemblance to the Jewish rabbi that he actually was. Lois Tverburg accurately reveals the teachings of our Messiah in their authentic context. Scriptures that Christians have read and treasured for a lifetime become fresh, new, and alive once they learn what Jesus was actually saying. I credit this book, and the book Tverburg co-authored with Ann Spangler, Sitting at the Feet of the Rabbi Jesus, for whetting my thirst for knowledge pertaining to the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. Informative and readable, scholarly without being "too heavy," I highly recommend this book.

A great tool for understanding the simplicity of the message of Jesus without the clutter of 2000 years of cultural change. A Must read for those who seek the original meaning and context of Jesus' ministry.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned much about the Jewish culture in which Jesus did his ministry. Quite often we mistakenly interpret the gospels through our Western mindset and miss the nuances and richness of the Jewish world. For instance, we often say that Jesus came to "abolish the law" as if Jesus was anti religious and anti law. Actually, Jesus came to fulfill the law.

This book is loaded with original insights into the Hebrew language. What amazed me most was how rich the original Hebrew language is. Hebrew had something like 8,000 words where the English language as around 40,000. So many words we read in Scripture have multi-layered meanings. For instance, the word, "hear" means much more than simply audibly grasping a word. In the Hebrew language it meant to hear, to act upon, to obey.

Tverberg has a wonderful way to bringing out these gems from the original Hebrew text and writes in such a way that the average layperson could read and understand and come away with a better grasp of Scripture. I highly recommend this book not only for pastors, but for any serious student of the Bible.

I highly recommend the entire series by Tverberg. She does a great hob of illustrating the context and culture if Jesus day in a very relatable and approachable writing style.

What a delightful and enlightening book. My heart was stirred towards our Jewish roots and how their practices are still relevant to us Christians today. In fact, often the wisdom and the practical application of Jewish ethics can teach us so much to be better Christians and disciples of Jesus.
