Zondervan Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions

In her bestseller Made to Crave, Bible-teacher Lysa TerKeurst shared her struggles with what went into her mouth and how her food choices were based on her emotions. Now in Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions, she focuses on what comes out in her speech. Sharing from her own experience, Lysa observes how many women hold their feelings inside, until circumstances reach a crisis and we explode, speaking in anger and saying words we'll regret later. In a very real way, we can come unglued and lose control of our emotions.

But there is hope for women who desire healing for their emotions. Without offering pat answers or simple solutions, Lysa brings insight to help women resolve conflict in healthy ways and improve communication with those whom you're in close relationship. Discover what it means to "renew your mind" in Biblical and practical ways.

God has used this book to convict me of my ungodly reactions to life's circumstances. Through Lysa's words, He has shown me how to change and consider His entire plan before sulking in my situational hardships. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!!!

I am so excited to be using this material for a young moms class. I have only gotten through the first few chapters and have reviewed a couple of the DVD sessions. It is so practical and challenging. It's been easy to read, Lysa is to the point and brings in the right amount of humor. Can't wait to see how God is going to work through this study!

Lysa is so down-to-earth and transparent. She is like you and me...the same trials, the same struggles. She writes as though she's your best friend of 25 years and you're talking over coffee. She gives such Biblically-based practical suggestions which are make-sense, small steps, ...one at a time. I just love this book, and all of her books!

Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl was my introduction to Lysa Terkeurst, and that book really impacted my relationship with God. Then there was Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God, Not Food which helped me to see how my relationship with food was a symptom of problems I had with my relationship with God. In this book, Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions , Lysa addresses our emotions, or rather our desire to not let them control us. And again this book has helped me to draw closer to God.
I love Lysa's honesty throughout all of her writings. She doesn't preach at you, but rather shares real stories about having been there. She comes unglued on her daughter not realizing that she has pocket dialed her pastor and he can hear it all, she cleans her house for company only to have company arrive and aks, "Lysa, where's the toilet seat for the kids' bathroom?" She is downright honest, which makes it so much easier to hear that we need to change, and opens us up to her suggestions. After all, if this gal who has similar unglued experiences can progress towards wise choices, why can't we?
And that's what this book is about, progress not perfection. Lysa keeps it real here too. Rather than tell us we will have a new us by Friday she tells us that we aren't going to get it right quickly, not if we want it to stick. We are aiming for imperfect progress, where our steps forward are greater than our steps back, because we will have steps backwards. No shortcut to happily ever after in this book, but I don't want the sugary sweet your life is going to be complete in 5 easy steps version. I want truth, I want to know that when I mess up it doesn't mean the game is over.
So if you have ever felt like sometimes your emotions control you rather than the other way around, grab this book and start reading. At best you will start on your own path to imperfect progress, at worst you spent $10 on a book that you can turn around and sell on ebay!
I did receive a digital copy of this book for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Why had I become completely unglued about bathroom towels? Towels, for heaven's sake. Towels! ~Lysa TerKeurst in Unglued
Ladies, I have the book for you! Trust me, you need it. First of all, let's judge this book by its cover: a woman bent over on top of a rock in the middle of a nowhere field screaming into a large yellow bag. Need I say more? How many times have you felt just that way?
Unlgued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions by Lysa TerKeurst is a raw emotion vs. spirit empowerment revelation with intimate confessions of unglued moments and engaging Biblical wisdom. She invites the reader to journey with her "imperfect progress" toward holiness. Although there are large portions of meat in the principles, there is the spice of sarcasm and sweet, tender desserts in the author's personal and humorous confessions that compliment this spiritual feasting. Yes, this is a book I ate up eagerly. It is written in a lighthearted style, but is raw in conviction. I felt Lysa TerKeurst's welcoming embrace of been there, done that, might do it again but trying not to understanding and love through her writing. Perhaps it spoke to me more because it was such a timely read as I was struggling with my own overloaded schedule and was having more unglued moments than usual.
TerKeurst describes four types of unglued reactions that women tend to do (men too, I suspect): the exploder who shames herself, the exploder who blames others, the stuffer who builds barriers, and the stuffer who collects retaliation rocks. I agree with the author's comments that there is not one that we do all the time, but rather we do them all in differing situations. Identifying and classifying our reactions is one thing, but then what do we do?
The author created a "Biblical Procedure Manual" to for the purpose of "positioning [your] heart into the flow of God's power"--such a compelling description!--for those oncoming unglued moments based on the story of King Jehoshaphat reaction to being hopelessly surrounded by armies of neighboring nations.
Step 1: Remember who you are (to and in your Lord).
Step 2: Redirect your focus to Jesus.
Step 3: Recognize God's job isn't your job.
Step 4: Recite thanks and praises to God.
Step 5: Realize reactions determine reach.
TerKeurst's descriptions of unsubstantiated, imprisoning, critical, negative mind chatter sprinkled throughout the book is spot on. Her technique of using scriptural ammunition to fight it off is effective and practical. However, the very last chapter is what surprised me and thank you, Lysa, for also writing that coming unglued isn't all bad, that it can be an outward expression of internal indications (things that we hide away but eat at our spirits) or just an overloaded, overwhelming schedule...both are fixable. The things broken inside us can also be used to bring us broken spiritually before our Lord and knowing that we come unglued on others at times, can also help us to understand that when others come unglued on us that it may not be about us, but something internal in them that needs tender, loving attention...giving us the opportunity to position our hearts into the flow of God's power.
I received this book for free from Zondervan in exchange for my honest review.

Emotions and choice? They go hand in hand. I love how Lysa teaches that we need to allow our emotions to work for us not against us. That alone is powerful wisdom for us Jesus girls. (I too like how she calls us that)
When you pick up, "Unglued", you are going to find a vast wealth of information that will help you to be "glued" to the Savior. Feeling whole and complete in Him.
In reading, "Unglued", it's as though your having a cup of coffee with Lysa and your just chatting over life. You know, the real stuff. The stuff we keep hidden and shut out from everyone else. Lysa has this way of making you feel comfortable. She is open and honest in her own struggles.
She teaches us about sweet grace and just how pure it is. How there are not really two of us. Not really one that the world sees and one that is a mess, but one person. One soul that Christ loves.
I love the cover. Now, my purses are mighty big and there have been times I just wanted to stick my head in and forget all else.
This is one of those stand out books that is real and personal. Lysa's personality shines through this book. I giggled with her and my heart has grown from her wise words.
The subtitle says it all, "Making Wise Choices In The Midst Of Raw Emotions". We learn about labels and how they are so unfair. I asked myself if I am a "Stuffer" or an "Exploder". For me, I am a combination of both. Bottom line, when we learn about our emotions and our personality, we can grow into the beautiful woman that Christ is creating us to become. Imperfections and all.
This book was a gift from Zondervan for its review.

Have you had one of those days where you wake up, feeling good, and ready for the day....and then.....those big words! Your kids are fighting, the dog chewed your phone cord, and your car won't start and you come UNGLUED? I hate to admit it, but I have certainly had those days. Lysa gives practical, spiritual tools in her book for women to use when these events cause to explode or say something unkind when we're just stressed We don't actually mean those words. Do you ever feel jealous of other women who seem to have it all together? Do you ever have "negative inside chatter" going on in your head that cause you to come unglued? Do you get to rest, truly rest, on your Sabbath?
Lysa encourages us to use scripture, prayer, examples from other godly women, and positive self-talk as tools in these times. I definitely can relate to all of the situations in Lysa's book which cause women to come unglued. I am a "work in progress" and "God isn't finished with me yet." Read Lysa's book if this sounds like a book that you also need. It felt like I was sitting on the porch swing having coffee with a true friend who cares about me and knows what is hurting me as I read.

Lysa offers down to earth transparency of her own struggles as a mother, wife and Christian speaker. This book is a pleasant mix of serious and humorous insights that every woman can relate to. Was helpful to me and I passed it on to my adult daughter.
