Kregel Publications Eusebius - The Church History: A New Translation With Commentary

Dr. Paul L. Maier's award-winning translation Josephus: The Essential Works, now has a companion volume in a brilliant, word-for-word translation of and commentary on Eusebius's great Church History. Beginning with Jesus of Nazareth and ending with Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor in the early part of the fourth century, Eusebius presents a panorama of apostles, church fathers, elders, bishops, heroes, heretics, confessors, and martyrs. Key features in this new translation include more than 150 full-color photographs, maps and illustrations, an informative introduction to Eusebius and his works, commentaries on the significant historical developments addressed in each book of The Church History, and four indexes listing persons, places, and subjects cited, as well as photographs and illustrative material. This flowing, contemporary English translation remains faithful to the original Greek text but liberates Eusebius from previous outdated and stilted works, creating a new standard primary resource for anyone, lay or professional, who is interested in the early history of Christianity.

The author has made reading Eusebius much easier than trying to read the original. His commentary at chapter ends are excellent. The publisher's book style is commendable.

Met or exceeded my expectation for the price. I was anticipating a cheap, somewhat irregular book. Excellent information; excellent illustrations; and references.

This is a contemporary, easy to read translation of Eusebius. His writing is very engaging, I couldn't put the book down. I came away with a very different perception of the early church and how it progressed through the centuries, especially with respect to persecution of the early Christians. Dr. Maier's footnotes and commentaries were very helpful.

Eusebius served as the Bishop of Caesarea. He has been called the "Father of Church History." His ten books of Church History are some of the earliest surviving documents of the history of the Christian Church, with Eusebius often providing eyewitness accounts. His work also served in keeping the words of other great historians and Christians alive. He cites many works by others, as support for his history, which have no survived. These are words we would never know existed, except through Eusebius' Church History.
I don't even pretend to attempt to review a work of this importance. What I will review briefly is this particular translation by Paul L. Maier. Maier opens by showing examples as to how his new translation is both accurate and easier to read. Throughout the text there are footnotes to help cite the quotations used by Eusebius and to add notes. Some notes add additional information that has since been discovered. Other notes show where history and research have shown things to be incorrect (though not in any way that would taint the work... mostly regarding dates) or unproven. At the end of each Book (chapter) Maier gives us a brief commentary both summarizing the Book and adding more information when needed. There are several pictures and maps to help the reader gain a better understanding. And Maier's translation is very easy to read.

It is a big book, so you have to be not easily discouraged. But fascinating to hear history as it is being written, not just in far retrospect. I find it interesting how much Josephus was used as a source of verification. Together we get confirmation of Bibical times and many everyday details of life. Also get more of an understanding how dangerous everday life was. Great read for history buffs and especially those who delight in seeing the confirmation of the Bible.
