Singer has always been one of my favorite authors and this book does not disappoint! It is a masterful combination of incredible suspense and heartfelt emotion. You will find a main character who is conflicted with love/respect/doubt in her relationship with her father and with love/respect/doubt in her relationship with her mentor. Toss into that mix the introduction of an opponent who could strangely become an ally and you have a tale of justice deceived and justice revived.
This is one mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end--a Singer specialty!

This book was a little hard to get into, but after I did, I couldn't put it down. I love Randy Singer's novels. They are full of suspense which is my favorite kind of novels. I would recommend this to everyone, however, keep reading, it will get better.

Although this book was initially a bit difficult to figure out, it was intriguing, with a lot of twists and turns. Singer makes you rethink what conclusions you reach early on. Not my favorite book, but I wouldn't miss anything he writes!

I have read other Randy Singer and thought they were excellent. However, this one is a bit slow moving. It's still good, better than average, just not gripping.

I only read a few chapters because I couldn't get into it. The author kept introducing new characters and I couldn't figure out why and it was getting really confusing trying to keep them all straight. There were to many characters. I kept waiting for the story to get going and it just didn't. Won't read anymore from this author.

Against all odds, Jamie Brock manages to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the 86 men in her life - Her father, her brother, her black lab Justice, and the 83 criminals who make up her case load as an assistant district attorney. But then life decides to get complicated. Her father's second stroke leaves Jamie and her brother debating about continuing life support. The murderer responsible for her mother's death is granted another stay of execution. Jamie's boss, the District Attorney, decides to run for Attorney General and Jamie is swept into volunteering for the campaign. And to top everything off, the lawyer who defended her mother's murderer is now accused of murdering his own wife, and Jamie wants to be part of the investigation and prosecution.
Interestingly enough, this book never quite got around to the "Let Go and Let God" speech. Instead, we watch Jamie spiral out of control - slowly at first, then with increasing speed - as everything in her life grows beyond what she can handle. The narration switches between first and third person, allowing us to watch from inside her skin while keeping our perspective, and handling sticky plot points with cleverness.
In the end, Jamie does find a measure of peace, but I felt that at that point her emotional state was dwarfed by my own in trying to go back and fill in the blanks of what had actually happened.
It's a Christian flavored legal thriller. Nothing is overly explicit, but there are the drugs, the abuse, the murder, the dirty dealings, the office romances, the spousal abuse, the prostitutes, and everything else one would expect. No language, and like I said, nothing overly graphic; but if this plot were filmed, we'd be left with a pretty dark R rated film.
Nonetheless, because of the author's light touch this was a very enjoyable, well written novel which kept me enthralled from cover to cover. Not a big fan of the genre, but of all the legal thrillers I've read so far this one was the most interesting and the best executed.

I loved this book!!! "The Last Plea Bargain" is incredibly well written and honestly reads like a movie script and I'm sure its just a matter of time before someone picks this up for that reason (seriously, while reading I could picture all of the A-list actors and actresses who would be perfect for each role).
First off, I must say because I'm not into all of those cop and courtroom shows that are so popular these days, I did feel a little out of the loop and uneducated about all of the legal jargon and proceedings, but I'm sure the majority of America would be prepped for a book like this. :) However, Randy Singer did a great job of explaining a lot while not making it seem boring and educational (not that I'm against that). If you've read any of my other reviews, you know that I love to learn something new, even in fiction, and I certainly did here.
There are so many twists and turns in this book and the plot, that I think I had a slight case of whiplash towards the end, but I LOVE a book that surprises me and keeps me guessing! So often these kinds of books are predictable, but Mr. Singer did a great job of making you think you've figured a thing or two out, only to pull the rug out from under you when you realize it was all smoke and mirrors. :)
In addition to the thrilling storyline, there is some great character development as you see Jamie, the main character, work through many common human emotions and responses to tragedy and heartbreak. I felt myself struggling alongside her with how to respond to different scenarios and people, as it was all written in such a realistic and relateable way.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to lovers of contemporary fiction, especially those who enjoy a good mystery and Law & Order style plots. :)

Randy Singer does an awesome job of walking a lay person, or the average reader through the technicalities of the judicial system. I may not remember most of it, but enough that the novel came alive in his words.
Jamie Brock has a lot on her mind...her mother was killed 3 years ago and at the start of the novel her father is on life support since his latest stroke. Besides that, she is assistant District Attorney in the office of the man who is running for political office. This novel is primarily the story of her trying to avenge her Mother's death, while dealing with her job. Let's not forget her brother Chris, who is a preacher, and has unconditionally forgive the one convicted of their mother's murder, who has said he has had a conversion and is now following Christ. Bereavement and subsequently the grieving, hate, then forgiveness of both herself and others, reaching out to those you love, trust, these are all tightly intertwined with felons, betrayal, murders and more to make a deep impact on the reader. A Pretty Good Book

This is the first book by Randy Singer I have read, and it is a pretty good book. It contains a lot of drama, a bit of suspense, a smattering of action, and a dash of romance.
Initially, I had a hard time keeping up with the many characters and how they relate to the storyline. The main character is Jamie Brock who tells the story in the first person. However, other parts of the story are told in the third person so the reader gets an inside view of the action. Even still, there are twists and surprises to the story that are unexpected and entertaining.
This book reminds me of the many crime dramas available on TV but far more interesting. I just might have to read more by Randy Singer now that I have had a small taste of his work.

Caleb Tate, defense attorney, becomes a suspect in his wife's murder. He believes he is innocent and is confident that her killer will be found.
Jamie Brock, assistant DA, whose mother was killed long ago by a convicted murderer seeks restitution for the senseless act. Her father lies in a bed suffering from a stroke and she promises to obtain justice no matter the cost.
Mace James, attorney to the convicted murderer of Jamie's mom, has seen much from the other side of the bars, but will it be enough to spare the life of another?
Highly entertaining this is by far the best courtroom and attorney drama/suspense I have read thus far. Believable characters, new and crisp storyline and a plot that promises many twists, turns and surprises with absolutely no dull parts! I was held captive by this fast paced thriller and could not put down the book. Very well written! I found it to be a faith challenging read and will be recommending this book to others.

I'm always happy when I get the chance to review one of Randy Singer's books. He writes legal thrillers like the well-known John Grisham, but I think Singer is better. And I admire him for writing Christian books. Grisham claims to be a Christian, but his books do not reflect that, nor do his political leanings. I'd much rather read a Randy Singer book any day over a John Grisham book.
There is a lot I don't understand about legal proceedings and what goes on in court, so the idea of plea bargains wasn't something I knew much about, but I thought the plot sounded good. And it was.
The book itself was very interesting, and is one of his best, in my opinion. He brought back some of the characters from his last book, and introduced some new ones. The story has a lot of suspense, legal action, and legal jargon. Singer does a great job of writing legal "stuff" in a way that even I can understand what is going on. I learned a lot about plea bargains, and a little more about our court system.
I knew this would be a book I'd want to not lie down once I started reading it, so I saved it until I could devote enough time to finish it. And that is what happened. I began reading it and read until I was done. Randy has written another masterpiece, one that measures up against Grisham or any other secular author.

Having read several of Randy Singer's legal thrillers, I can honestly say he's become a favorite author, and The Last Plea Bargain may be the best one yet! Jamie Brock is a prosecutor now and is known for refusing to cut deals with criminals. However, when a criminal defense attorney is arrested for murder, he unites the prisoners and shuts down the legal system. Jamie must begin making deals in order to get the rest of the system back on track. And when her father's murderer's attorney claims an innocent man is headed toward the death chamber, everything she begins questioning everything she believes.
Singer delivers a brilliant legal thriller. It's not often that I can't figure out where the story is going, but he kept me guessing until the very end. The characters were well-developed, and the story was intricate. I also enjoy how the author uses his novels to highlight social issues and makes me think about things in a new light. I highly recommend to anyone who loves suspense or legal thrillers! And if you've never read the genre, this would be a great introduction! [5 stars]

Randy Singer is a veteran trial attorney turned author of legal suspense fiction. His most recent release, The Last Plea Bargain, takes the reader into the world where crime, the law, and the system collide.
Begin with Jamie Brook, an assistant district attorney, who simply is not a "deal cutter." Simply a resounding, "No!", to plea bargains. Enter the scene a powerful defense attorney, Caleb Tate, whose wife dies of an overdose. Said defense attorney is indicted for his wife's murder, and he just happens to be the attorney that defended the man that killed Jamie's mother.
Irony! Jamie must prosecute Caleb Tate. But then a real legal crossroads is encountered. A log jam of "no plea bargains" causes the legal system to literally spin out of control until it basically comes to a standstill. All because of the machinations of Caleb Tate.
It is refreshing to be able to read an extremely well-written book with a spiritual message woven into the plot but without the air of a sermon. There are no embarrassing scenes and no foul language. Randy Singer has been compared to John Grisham, but I see Mr. Singer as far excelling in his writing style and ability, story telling that grips, authenticity, and presentation of a really clean read.
While I can not assess legal authenticity myself, I feel that Mr. Singer's books simply abound in the "real thing." His beautifully crafted story and character development brings to life realistic people and events of the real world.
The complex plot and levels in the story are great and make for an interesting, challenging, and enjoyable read. I recommend The Last Plea Bargain and don't think you'll be disappointed.

Jamie Brock is an assistant DA with some very specific beliefs. She is known for her unwillingness to plea bargain - ever. Part of her passion lies in the fact that her mother was murdered in their home when she was 16, and this truly sets the tone for the course of her life. During the time period of this story, she is under extreme stress for a number of reasons - the execution of her mother's killer is looming, her father has had a stroke and is on life support, things at work go a tiny bit haywire. Additionally, (in a sub- yet related storyline), a well known local lawyer is arrested for allegedly killing his wife - and while in jail creates a serious stir with the gangs in the system, where no one will take a plea of any kind (and those that do, they or their loved ones are killed.) This greatly affects her workload, and she is most definitely in need of a break.
It was nice to catch up with Jamie Brock again (a character originally introduced in "False Witness", where she was a law student) - this time as a full fledged lawyer. This book focuses a great deal on ethics and behind the scenes of the justice system, as well as the death penalty. I love reading Randy Singer because he obviously knows a lot about the law, so the rules, etc. ring very true - but he also knows people. And these characters were interesting to me.
This was a very well done mystery, lots of detail but not ever overwhelming, and I enjoyed trying to figure out "who done it"....(and I was half right!) :)

Plea bargains may grease the rails of justice, but for Jamie Brock, prosecuting criminals is not about cutting deals. In her three years as an assistant DA, she has never plea-bargained a case and is convinced she never will. However, when her nemesis Caleb Tate, a powerful defense attorney, is indicted for murder, he comes up with a plan to bring down the entire justice system. Suddenly all the prisoners begin rejecting the deals. If they try to plea, then they are mysteriously killed. Prosecutors become helplessly overwhelmed, and criminals start to be let free on mere technicalities. To break the logjam and convict Caleb, Jamie may have to violate every principle that has guided her career. However, it seems she has little choice. To convict the devil, sometimes you have to a cut a deal with one of his demons.
Randy Singer delivers an absolutely powerful legal thriller in The Last Plea Bargain. The plot line flows quickly and is well thought out. There were several times throughout the novel where I thought I had figured out the perpetrator and those employed by him, but I was constantly stunned by yet another twist. I never figured out the method and the person behind the madness until the very last chapter. The central characters, particularly Jamie Brock and Mace James, were very realistic. Despite being Christian characters, they all had character flaws and sins they had to work through and repent from. The tone of The Last Plea Bargain was also well done. There were instances of melancholy, happiness, forgiveness, etc.
The Last Plea Bargain was a well crafted novel which brought up many important issues to consider about the legal system. The book made me truly consider the role of plea bargains in the legal system and whether they were truly brought justice to the victims and protected the rest of the community when the felons were being released through those plea bargains. The novel also brought up whether it is moral to have a death penalty, especially when the person has repented and may not have been guilty of the crime in the first place.
I truly enjoyed The Last Plea Bargain, and Randy Singer is one of my all time favorite authors. I highly recommend this novel to those who wish to be challenged in the morals of the legal system and who enjoy great legal mysteries.

Jamie Brock is a prosecutor who is known for never offering a plea bargain to any case that comes across her desk. Her resolve is tested though when a prominent defense attorney is charged with the murder of his wife and manages in the process to cause a massive log jam in the court dockets. Criminals start to run the judicial system by refusing plea bargains and swamping prosecuting attorneys desks. This leads to felons walking free on the streets. Faced with many tough decisions along the way, will Jamie be able to hold onto her convictions and protect the reputation of her father? Or will she set it all aside to convict a man who murdered his wife?
Randy Singer has written a masterful book that kept me hooked to the very last page. Jamie's struggles with her convictions and her ethics clashing with her desire for justice are gripping. The book takes so many twists and turns, it made it extremely hard to put down. Mr. Singer is a genius at the legal thriller. I sincerely hope to see the character of Jamie Brock again!!

Justice. Grace. Which one is heavier? more important? easier? Which would you choose?
I guess that depends on what side of the issue you are on.
Jamie Brock is most definitely on the side of justice. The thought of exhibiting grace rarely seriously crosses her mind. And for good reason. Jamie has not been the recipient of much grace, it seems. The man who murdered her mother has still not received his just punishment, and so many others have abused the grace that others have exhibited. For her, it is a matter of integrity.
But everything changes as one case after another begins piling up and pieces to puzzles she didn’t understand before start falling into place. So many questions come up, and she is unsure who she can trust and where she should turn. It could end up costing her her life, and the lives of those she loves. What will justice do for her then?

The Last Plea Bargain by Randy Singer is a legal thriller that forces you to think through these questions. I read The Justice Game by Singer last year and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to see this book scheduled to be released this year. Randy’s books have a way of making you think and ask difficult questions. He will not put a proposition before you and expect you to agree with him, and I really appreciate that in an author. I also learn a lot when I read Singer’s books. He is a good author/teacher, and that makes it fun to read books outside of my general area of understanding. Singer has given us a story that is fast-paced and exciting, but also includes a lot of thought-provoking questions. There are a lot of twists and turns to the story, so you are constantly guessing what is going to happen.
On a critique side, there were times when I felt that there were maybe too many twists, and I myself never knew who to root for or support. It was not enough to ruin the story, but at the end I was maybe a little disappointed with some of the resolved relationships and exposed secrets. If it were up to me, those things could have stayed secrets, so I could keep liking the characters! This is a novel, there ought to be some suspension of reality in the mind of the reader, so the critiques I have would not cause me to not recommend the book.
On the contrary, I would highly recommend this book. Sometimes it is hard to come across good, solid fiction written from a biblical worldview that is not offensive and yet is set in the real world and deals with real world issues. This is one of the few. You won’t regret it, I promise!
