It’s an amazing, poetic journey that takes your soul to the heights of truth, while increasing your lung capacity to a breadth you never knew existed. The words weave into your soul like a vine preparing to bring forth only the best fruit from the harvest. It runs deeper than any river of words I’ve ever swam in, and as one of my brood said, “You feel like you’ve had a word bath once you are finished reading.”
The threads laid bare are real, and once you enter into the breaking of bread with Ann, you do not know the author better…you know the Author of life better and how His word made manifest is a gift. A thousand gifts…to be precise…and growing…
All that aside, the tiny thread that flaps in the air this morning brings with it a needle tip bearing truth. You see, Ann shares a journey, and it is obvious that through circumstances beyond her mother’s control, her mother lost control. And with it, Ann lost portions of a family unit that brought sadness beyond measure.
Step by step, Ann receives healing through giving thanks. But again, I must tell you…this story is not about Ann…but rather, it brings you squarely into the center of the persona of Christ. It is deep…wonderfully deep. In all my years of reading, I’ve never felt like literally diving into the pool of words I was reading. In this book I would literally do so if I could.
Now…back to my needle pulling thread. In spite of the trials and tribulations an imperfect world brings about…in spite of being raised in the midst of imperfect circumstances…in spite of the short comings of people all around, in spite of not being given an environment of perfection, the message is clear and truth rings out. Our God reigns.
So oft I try to bring the comforters…the big, soft, colorful, cozy love bundles tossed upon my brood offering care, and inspiration. Sometimes those comforters are received, sometimes they are rejected, and sometimes those comforters actually do harm…even though they were never intended to do so. God whispers to me in the midst of Ann’s words that when someone needs to be lifting weights in order to bear all things for Christ who strengthens…by tossing them a comforter…may weaken.
As I read One Thousand Gifts…and I am still lingering somewhere in the midst of chapter 5 or 6…I am gifted with the insight that in spite of my imperfect parenting…our God reigns. When I put myself upon that throne, protecting my brood from the very things He needs to bless them with for strength…I play a role that was never intended…I play God. May He strengthen those whom He loves for the days ahead…to bless those whom He needs to bless.
Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV) acknowledges God's promise: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You.” Amen.

I only wish that I had read the 1 star reviews prior to my purchase. I find that I have to re-read every page because it is so "flowery" and I just don't get it. The author uses far too many words to describe a simple statement. I am a simple person and I like books that get to the point.
Another 1 star reviewer quotes from the book and I find some of the quotes appalling. I probably will not proceed to Chapter 3.
Sorry I threw away $10.99 on an e-book that will not be read.

The book was fairly interesting. I have not finished reading it, however, I will soon. In the first part of the book the author seems to drift into a poetic stance, which I found a bit confusing. I had a hard time keeping interested, and decided to read it later. It seemed repetitive.

This book is great but I should have paid the extra $2 for it at amazon as the CBD app for my Ipad gave me a lot of trouble (even though I am savvy) and I had to contact customer service twice to get it to work. Never again!

I have read this book and found quite a few things about Ann Voskamp's book that we should be cautious of:
1. She quotes Henri Nouwen (as do a lot of people who sell books & DVDs in Christian bookstores) who said, "Today I personally believe that while Jesus came to open the door to God's house, all human beings can walk through that door, whether they know about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call to help every person claim his or her own way to God." (Universalism, Universal Salvation - heretical)
2. She quotes Brennan Manning (as do a lot of people who sell books & DVDs in Christian bookstores) who has said, "I develop a nasty rash around people who speak as if mere scrutiny of its pages (the Bible) will reveal precisely how God thinks and precisely what God wants." (Low view of Scripture)
3. She quotes Julian of Norwich (a Catholic mystic) who has said, "And I saw no difference between God and our Substance: but as it were all God." (Seriously? Reminds me of what the enemy said in the garden.)
4. She quotes Annie Dillard who has said, "I have no religion, or many religions." (Ridiculous statement!)
5. I found this statement written in the book very offensive: "I fly to Paris and discover how to make love to God." The whole of her book is about living the simple life, and yet she has to fly off to Paris to have the ultimate experience with God? (not to mention offensive sexual reference!)
That's just a few examples. I know this book is very popular in Christian women's circles. But unfortunately, we live in a time where we need to scrutinize even things that come out of Christian bookstores.
Is the thankfulness message in the book good? Yes. But I would recommend reading this review to have a fuller understanding of why we must be cautious reading and recommending her book: [...]
I once heard someone say they were putting on their Ann Voskamp "Thankfulness" list that they were thankful for paper clips. This is an example of spiritualizing something - giving it a spiritual context where there isn't one. Yes, we can appreciate that paper clips keep our papers in order, but we don't want to think that God is sitting around thinking of ways to make life more convenient for us ;) Ann Voskamp's list has things like that on it - for example: being thankful for 3 things that are white.
Ann Voskamp's list keep us thinking in a positive and appreciative manner. I like that. But I think we can go much deeper in our thankfulness when we think on God and His character and His direct involvement in our lives. I think as we read the Bible and areas where thankfulness was offered, it is so directed at God - not paper clips. C'mon!!!
I would love to see us all keep a different kind of thankfulness list that includes things like:
1. What are we thankful for in the Scripture that we read today?
2. Has God answered a prayer for us today?
3. List a character trait of the Lord that we love and have seen manifested in our lives.
4. How did someone reflect God's love to us today?
1. What are we thankful for in the Scripture that we read today?
2. Has God answered a prayer for us today?
3. List a character trait of the Lord that we love and have seen manifested in our lives.
4. How did someone reflect God's love to us today?
This is the kind of list that will give us something of substance to share.

The question is raised in 1000 Gifts, How long does it take your soul to realize that your life is full? Maybe that was the moment... that Sunday evening when I devoured all 180 pages of too many adjectives and fragmented sentences... and my heart jiggled into a new place that I had heard about but never quite known. Faith is the gaze of a soul.
The circumstances have not changed. NPR radio still clicks on at 6:45 a.m. and Orange Cat is still stretching out her claws on my couch. But now I am noticing that what is pressed down, shaken together and running over, poured into my lap. And turning them over in my fingers and naming them, one by one.
