sal barbera5 Stars Out Of 5October 17, 2007sal barberaThis book is a must for any pastor, counselor, lay person or any one aspiring to be an effective witness for Jesus in a world of moral confusion. Dr. Brewer writes with tenderness, compassion and academic excellence. His thoughts are penned with thoughtfulness and great biblical knowledge. It was a pleasure to read hermeneutic excellence. Reading this book once is not enough. It has to be studied with attention because the author offers, not only provocative thinking but great cultural and rabbinical insight into first century Christianity. Many biblical references are given to make the reader aware how important it is to consider the topic as a whole throughout scripture. Much of what is in this book one rarely hears from the pulpit because, frankly speaking, many pastors today lack the academic training. This is not easy reading. However, as already stated, it is a must for serious students of the Bible. Great reading.

I wanted to a book to have good biblical scholarship and compassion, navigate the issues well, and be challenging yet compassionate. There seems to be two camps in regards to divorce - either divorce is never okay for any reason and of course not remarriage, or divorce is okay with God in any circumstances. This book navigates those waters with compassion, using biblical truths and cultural history, and even makes some great suggestions about having a forgiveness/repentance ceremony before any subsequent marriage. This book was extremely helpful in explaining the cultural implications about divorce in the time of Jesus and being very careful with how the scriptures are handled. I was very impressed, and this book has informed my theology on divorce more than anything else. He also has a website where he answers questions as well, and he answered some questions I still had about the book personally. I was very happy with this book.

It was far from this. It is such a wonderful breath of fresh air explaining the Scriptures with fantastic clarity and answers some very contentious issues extremely well. I highly recommend this to all church leaders and those suffering through divorce. I have an even deeper love for our loving Father after reading this book.
