Peace Hill Press Writing with Ease Level One Workbook

A new series on teaching writing, from the author of "The Well-Trained Mind," In "Writing with Ease," Susan Wise Bauer lays out an alternative plan for teaching writing, one that combines the best elements of old-fashioned writing instruction with innovative new educational methods. The workbooks provide lessons, student worksheets, and teacher instructions for every day of writing instruction. Each covers one year of study. Used along with "Writing with Ease," Level One (first in a planned four-volume set) completes the elementary-grade writing curriculum.

Writing With Ease Work Book: Level 1 is authored by Susan Wise Bauer. She is a faculty member of the College of William and Mary, and co-author of "The Well Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home."
Writing With Ease Work Book: Level 1 is a companion to Bauer’s text “Writing With Ease: Strong Fundamentals.” Please see my review of “Writing With Ease: Strong Fundamentals” for a comprehensive overview of the curriculum.
Writing With Ease: Work Book Level 1 is arranged according to a thirty-six week schedule. Each week consists of the following components:
Day 1
Copy work
Focus (This indicates the fundamentals of grammar being taught within the lesson.)
Day 2
Narration Exercise
Day 3
Copy work
Focus (This indicates the fundamentals of grammar being taught within the lesson.)
Day 4
Narration Exercise and Copy work
End of the Year Evaluation
Included in the work book are a list of literature reading selections and consumable student pages.
Overall we have been pleased with Ms. Bauer’s logical approach to writing instruction, and look forward to utilizing “Writing With Ease Work Book: Level 2.”

This workbook is GREAT! I love that the student writing pages pull out, so my child doesn't have to worry about keeping the book from closing on him.
I purchased this along with the book. I wish someone would have told me...The workbook basically has all the information that is in the book. So, you really don't need the book to understand the program (in my opinion anyways).

I have now completed Year 1 and Year 2 with my oldest daughter. I think that this program if supplemented with a creative writing program like Just Write can be okay. But, not for the long term. I would only do 1 year of this program. The benefits of this program can be achieved in 1 year I think. The strengths of this program are that a child sees and imitates good grammar and spelling (copywork) and children practice answering questions with good spelling--setting them up to write and think in complete sentences. These are both very good things. But, children do not learn how to write paragraphs or receive any explicit instruction in years 1, 2, or 3 about how to structure and write a paragraph or add descriptive words to sentences. The instruction in this program is almost entirely implicit and I think students need both implicit and explicit instruction.

We are very pleased with Writing With Ease Level One. We wish that it was around when our other children were younger. This is the kind of program that we have been searching for, for many a year. Thank you SWB!

I really love this program and so do my children as it is interesting and in bite-size chunks - not overwhelming. The handbook ("Strong Fundamentals") gives you the know-how to create your own lessons but with 9 children I don't have time to search for appropriate passages from books. The workbooks provide these passages. However, I do have one gripe - I hate the way most of the book is the copywork/narration pages. I would rather use our own paper with the type of lines we use and the form of writing we use. It only takes a few seconds for me to write the master for my children. It's also hard to fit the narratives into the space provided when the teacher writes and the child copies. This means I've paid for a huge book of which I only want 1/3 of. It should be brought out in 2 parts.

This product is well scripted, like "Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading". It is a wonderful help with staying on target and on schedule with the basics of copywork and narration. The authors are smart to have this dovetail with the previosly published "First Language Lessons", which we are also using. The workbook is great, but we do not write in it because we use the Handwriting Without Tears paper for our 1st grader.
