A must for any parent. Incredible advice from someone over a hundred years ago shows that we still face the same struggles in parenting. It made me really think about the ways that I interact with my kids. I can't recommend it highly enough!

I wish I'd found this book earlier. Yes, the language is old and a little difficult, but I found that part of the appeal. Each chapter had some gem in it. I would say it is not so much a book full of "how to discipline" but rather a book filled with the reasons for training, and principles behind and in training children. It often brought my attention to the qualities of a child which I tend to forget. Good advice, very different from all the modern advice of lenience. I hope this book never gets considered "out of date".

This book is so useful and practical! It is encouraging me to raise my standards for myself in the realm of parenting. I think I am a pretty good mom, but daily life with a toddler and a preschooler sometimes leads me to lose my cool, and it is so good to be reminded that God's standards are higher than mine and that the justification I feel for getting upset with my kids, might not be just in God's eyes. Yes, he wants me to discipline them, but not to make them feel bad with a chewing out (called a scolding in this book). Some terms are dated in the book: for example, whining is called teasing. This book will help you!

This book is a must have for every parent. It is completely different than any other parenting book I have ever read, and I have read quite a few. The chapters are short too, which when you are parenting (especially five children!!) this can be good! Easy to read, easy to apply immediately, and each chapter is full of knowledge from an experienced Christian father who had raised eight of his own! GREAT BOOK!
