Hendrickson Publishers Systematic Theology, 3 Volumes

The magnum opus of one of America's most prominent theologians offers an in-depth exploration of theology, anthropology, soteriology, and eschatology. This monumental work, now a standard for theological students, was written while Hodge served as a professor at Princeton, where he permanently influenced American Christianity as a teacher, preacher, and exegete. Includes a comprehensive index. Three hardcovers, from Hendrickson.

Got this while it was marked at $20. Three volume systematic work for that price, come on, no brainer. The chapter on "Who Christ Died For" is pure gold and worth the price alone. Yes, it is a bit annoying that the Latin isn't translated, but not a huge deal.
Haven't read it all, but this has definitely made me a fan of Hodge.

Great Set of Systematic Theology however...

This is a Great Systematic Theology set however one thing I wish I knew before I had bought this Systematic Theology set at a highly discounted price at 20$ (which it is normally 100$ so that is mainly reason I got it since it's Charles Hodge' Work) Is that their is no translation in the book for the Latin, and Greek Quotes that Hodge uses throughout the books I have thought maybe I could copy and paste to something like google translate or something but most of those online translator's don't work too well.....if you don't mind these quotes and can read around them or if you can read the original languages such as latin it is a bonus for you so you can see the quotes...otherwise you will miss the quotes since there isn't a translation into English beneath it (which would have been helpful for people like me who want to study Early Church Fathers' Work but don't know Latin or Greek or Hebrew)

Especially at the sale price of $20, I feel I did well. The bindings look solid & the books are well above the usual book club quality level.

Excellent work. A basic item for any student's library. Hodge is quoted by so many people I just had to have this work for my own.

I am not a biblical scholar, but the content is more than what I had hoped for and I am very happy to have the 3 volume set. Volume 1 had a broken binder, which Christianbook quickly replaced with a second 3 volume set. Unfortunately Volume 1 again has binder problems, not broken this time, but less than perfect. Given that you can't get a Princeton theological education for the price of this 3 volume set, I will gladly keep it and recommend it to others. I only wish that the publisher could get the binder right. Christianbook.com was exceptional in their service.

Hodge's Systematic Theology is a great resource for a terrific price. As a seminary graduate who specialized in theology I would highly recommend it. The author uses a laser like precision to analyze the various topics covered. He addresses these topics and delves into the other beliefs or arguments pertaining to them. One may say that this set is dated. No need to worry about that however. It is dealing with timeless truths and the same arguments against timeless truths always have a way of turning back up again. The only issue I would have is the use of language that is left untranslated. My recommendation to you is buy it and enjoy it. This set is well worth the money.

Charles Hodge was not just a great theologian, he was a great thinker as well. I would certainly recommend his writings to any serious student of the Scriptures. The binding is superb, with heavy white paper for contrast and ease of reading; the quality is top notch. This set of three books is a great addition to one's personal library. I am very pleased to now have a set in mine.

I was thrilled upon receiving the Hodge set to find that they have redone the binding, fixing the previous issue which was at least as bad as the complaints, if not worse. That said I bought it this time for an elder in my Church and upon arrival I found the new bindings. Due to the new bindings I feel compelled to buy another copy to replace the set with the bad bindings, which is quite do able at $20. So thank you, thank you, thank you once again for the new bindings which should make this set a pleasure and a joy to sit and read with out getting hand cramps, which is nice being easily my favorite Systematic theology.

Charles Hodge has the rare ability of saying complicated things in simple and direct ways. There is a clarity and even simplicity to these (long) systematics that is refreshing. Hodge interacts well with competing views, and his argumentation is always thoroughly Scriptural. He and I would disagree at points, but I wouldn't dare take him on in debate. Excellent resource! I must also add that for the price, the quality of these books is shocking. I don't know how they can sell them for 19.99. These precious volumes are easily worth triple that amount.

Very impressed with this purchase. These books contain tons of information to grow in my understanding, as well as foster thought on various subjects. It appears that they have solved the problem of the stiff binding. It is not only easy to hold in your hand, but it lies flat on a table top as well.

I agree with other reviewers that the binding of these volumes is awful (very tight - the books don't sit open at all and have to be forceably held open while reading). But the contents are incredible. Hodge is incredibly clear, thorough and readable. If you are reformed, you'll find a very clear exposition of the doctrines you are familiar with, often following the pattern of the Westminster standards. If you are not from a reformed background, I would recommend that you buy these just to read his section on soteriology in volume 2. Before you reject the Augustinian/Calvinist position, read the best and clearest exposition of it this side of John Owen. The only caution I have about Hodge's systematic theology is that he occasionally quotes other theologians in the original Latin, and sometimes these passages are quite long. If you don't read Latin, you'll lose the point he's making. But these passages are not at all enough to take away from the excellence of this work. I highly recommend it.
