Hendrickson Youth Ministry in Modern America: 1930 to the Present

A groundbreaking study on modern youth ministry! Focusing on the Walther League (Lutheran), the Young Christian Workers (Catholic), Youth for Christ (evangelical), and African American congregations, Pahl chronicles the emergence and impact of these groups, explores how ministry to young people has changed, and suggests new directions for the 21st century. 248 pages, softcover from Hendrickson.

This history of youth ministry is a critical starting point for any ministry team member if they want to fully understand the purpose of youth programs. The book is rich and detailed with the social history of teenagers and young adults through the 1900s. While the last chapter gives important conclutions and directives for the future of youth ministry, DON'T SKIP THE MAIN PART of the book, which builds the case for generationally-integrated youth programs. If your present youth director insists on existing in his/her own little world and isolating your future members from the rest of the congregation, then this book will be life-changing for your church. You should read this book if you: work with children or youth, are hiring a youth director/minister, or are a church that doesn't retain members after they graduate from high school. The reading can be dry at times, especially if you are not a history buff--stick it out for the gems at the end!
