I am taking a class - "Intro to Biblical Hebrew" and this is our text. I knew nothing about the language. We are having class 4 tomorrow and I am amazed at how much I have already "soaked up" through use of this text (and my instructor).

I loved Bill Mounce's "Greek for the Rest of Us". So, I had high hopes that "Hebrew for the Rest of Us" would be the equivalent. It is, however, it lacks one of the strengths that GRU had which is an accompanying cd rom of lectures. I'm hoping this will be offered in a future edition. All in all, "Hebrew for the Rest of Us" is invaluable because it is a simpler approach to understanding Biblical Hebrew than any other text I have found.

From the ground up this is a good refresher to assist the novice as well as the medium practitioner with Hebrew word studies. Good resource and worth the investment and time.

Pros: there are helpful charts throughout,

    Cons:

    1) the Hebrew text is so tiny you almost need a magnifying glass to read the accent marks.

    2) Fields was the wrong man to get to write an introductory book. He's too smart. The 'rest of us' do not have the grammatical experience that he does.

    3) there are tons of English grammatical abbreviations used throughout the book. Flip to any page and you will find these interspersed throughout - basically turning an introductory Hebrew book into calculus. (There's a list of grammar abbreviations in the front that is TWO PAGES long, double columned...). Why not just write out the terms in the text or rework the text altogether to avoid so many Abr? (Abbreviations) ;)
