I loved Sarah's debut novel! The Heiress of Winterwood was such an unexpected good read because I felt it wasn't your typical Regency romance novel! There was much depth that brought the story to life in an unforgettable way since it wasn't just about two people falling in love!

From the very beginning I was hooked to the story and it only kept getting better! The intricacies of what was happening in the family had me thoroughly engaged as well as the interactions with the residents of two brothers at Eastmore Hall! Amelia's passion was so strongly felt through the pages as well as Graham's!

The characters and story were awesome, but the Gospel message was truly powerful! More times then once I have been in that same similar state with God as Amelia in struggling to trust Him with certain things in my life! I am grateful that Sarah made such a heroine who was not only believable in this aspect, but also easily relatable! Everything surrounding this novel had trust in God at the center of it as well as the truth that He will never leave us or forsake us!

I am eagerly looking forward to more novels by this author because she writes a not so typical romance mixed in with drama, action, and surprisingly mystery! I highly recommend this novel to any Regency era lovers!

    SUMMARY:

Amelia Barrett made a promise upon her friend's deathbed to take care of her baby, Lucy, as her very own. As heiress to the Winterwood estate upon marriage, Amelia finds herself betrothed to Edward Littleton, a man whose character is different than originally portrayed and who refuses to allow Lucy to stay. Upon Captain Graham Sterling's return from sea, Amelia must explain his wife's passing, introduce him to his daughter and make quick plans to ensure her bond with Lucy remains. Through many twists and turns, friends and foes, lies and loves, Amelia and Graham must learn to work together for a chance at their happily-ever-after.

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

This book was outstanding, even more so as it was Sarah Ladd's debut novel. The characters, faith, time frame (Darbury, England: 1814), writing style, word choice and story line all kept me fully engaged until the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish...I was only disappointed when I read the last page! Fortunately, I have the sequel, The Headmistress of Rosemere, on my shelf to read next. Bravo!!

Amelia Barrett, after nine months she still grieves the loss of her friend Katherine Sterling, whom died shortly after giving birth to a precious baby girl. Amelia has promised her friend to care for and stay with her baby always. The baby's father is Captain Graham Sterling at sea and has not, as yet, meet his daughter.

Amelia is heiress to the Winterwood estate in Darbury, England. She is engaged to be married and her fiancee has made it clear to her that he does not want to raise the child, he insist she send the child away after they marry. She refuses and he becomes a totally different man from the one that she had agreed to wed he tries to dominate her actions. She will do anything to keep the child at Winterwood with her, even if it means breaking her engagement. She fells as if she were the child's real mother and could never give her up.

Graham the child's father has just arrived to meet his daughter and make arrangements for her care once he returns to sea. He is staying with his brother at the estate that is next to Winterwood's estate. He finds his daughter to be the image of his deceased wife. He has great admiration of Amelia for the love and care she has bestowed upon his daughter in his absence. Just maybe she would be able to continue to be his daughter's guardian while he is at sea.

Within just a few days of his arrival his daughter is kidnapped and there is several different suspects that could be responsible for the kidnapping. Graham and Amelia create a bond while searching for the child. It is very apparent they both dearly love the child. They must call on God to give them faith, courage and strength to get through this harrowing experience. They trusted God to keep the child safe in His arms.

This was an exciting read that I managed to read in one day. I could not put it down! It was full of action and kept you guessing as to who was responsible for the kidnapping. The two main characters both showed resistance in opening their heart and their trust to anyone. The author writes that when the characters putting all into God's will their hearts softened willingly them to trust in their loved one again.

    I highly recommend this book.

What an exciting novel! Amelia is the heiress to a large estate, provided she marry before her twenty-fourth birthday. She has also fallen in love with a baby girl whom she vowed to protect. Is her current fiance truly in love with her or only after her fortune? When the father of Lucy, the baby, comes home, Amelia has a creative proposition for him. Will he accept? What are his motives? There is romance, danger and intrigue in this novel and an exciting story line. Tie it all up with both characters feeling abandoned by God and working their way back to Him and you have a very enjoyable story. I received a copy of The Heiress of Winterwood from Thomas Nelson Publishers to review and offer my honest opinion.

This was SUCH a good book!

It was one of those books that you are very sad to see the end. And you hope the author writes really quickly to produce book 2!

I am always drawn in by a complicated story line and this book creates enough drama, distress, struggle to create a great beginning to a series. But the story isn't all complicated... the characters are interesting, funny, creative and enjoyable.

I love when an author develops a story and sets the stage for the next book at the same time. This book does both very well.

Sarah Ladd is a new author for me and I was very impressed. I loved her writing style and the way she writes a full, complex story with many characters and circumstances all weaving together without it taking away from the main purpose of the book.

Another wonderful book to add to your spring reading list!
