A very informative read on the times, places, society, political views, and religious views from the first century to modern day Christianity as we know it. The author's research into the important figures and events that took place in their time gives the reader an invaluable resource to learn how the persecution, the power of the church, the government, and the schism shaped Christianity. It's a great history every Christian should read.

The Story of Christianity is a must have copy for all the students of Church History. Gonzalez has given us a very detailed study of the church through the centuries, and for teachers of church history, it has proved to be a very useful tool since it covers broadly a number of key areas essential to understanding the story of the church in the past centuries. However, if another revision is to be given, it is essentially importnat that the author cover broadly areas to do with African church history also.

Each chapter summarized exactly what the title chapter claimed it would. Gonzalez has taken 2000 years of history and condensed it. Amazing.

Gonzalez's work is a gem. It's well-researched, blessedly easy to read, and covers Church history from a variety of different angles. This was my textbook in seminary, and still my go-to resource for historical info. Yes, it's a bit old (1984), but still an excellent text.

If you could purchase only one book on Church history, this should be it. Mr. Gonzalez does an excellent job of summarizing the important events and people in Church history. While this book is used in seminaries, don't be put off by that fact: the book is accessible even to the layman who isn't pursuing advanced degrees in ministry or theology or related majors.
Personally, I would like to have seen more about the history of early eastern Christianity (eastern as in the Church east of Antioch and Jerusalem) but this work is otherwise an excellent one. Again, if you could have only one book on Church history then this should be that book.

"The Story of Christianity" covers the history of Christianity from the Apostles to John Wycliffe in Vol. 1 and from the Protestant Reformation to the mid-1900's in Vol. 2 of this two-volumes-in-one book. The author traced the controversies in Christian thought and developments in Christian action in roughly chronological order. (He'd talk about developments in one area or county and then sometimes jump back in time a bit to cover a parallel development in another country.) He explained how the different social, political, and economic forces shaped Christian thought and action. He covered the people who most influenced Christianity though few were studied in-depth. He also filled in political events that connected major points in Christian history.
The book was very readable despite it's huge size. Though the author didn't bash Catholics, he did point out things that Catholics might not like to hear, like just how late certain Catholic doctrines were developed and how not all popes were exactly saintly people. The author also seemed to have a slight bias against any Christian group who held or holds any doctrine too fervently. Also, despite it's size, the book didn't cover any subject as in-depth as some people will like, but it's an excellent overview of the subject.
I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting an easy-to-read overview of the developments in Christian thought and action.

I purchased this book for a class at my college and I was surprised to see what a good book it is. It is not like a regular textbook where it is difficult to understand. Clear and concise language and easy to follow.

Excellent book, actually a 2 volume set (which you need to keep in mind when going for the index-there's seperate indexes for both volumes).
Very readable, almost surprisingly so (and I mean that as a compliment). The indexes are somewhat sketchy and incomplete when using as a tool is my only complaint.

So far, what I've had time to read has been very easily understood and very "readable". Being a Sunday School teacher for an adult class, I find it to be very helpful to have background information about the history of the church as we know it, especially the early years. This book is just what I've been looking for.

I bought this book for a class, and it was helpful. It reads fairly easily and is a good resource. My main concern was that (being a two volume edition) it would be too thick to hold and actually read. No worries, it works fine.

The superb monetary value would be enough, but the value of this volume to students and other interested persons is even greater. Dr. Gonzalez' book is not simply interesting, engaging, non-partisan, accurate, and chock-full of pertinent cultural historical facts, events, persons, movements, truths, heresies, and analyses, it has an incredible capacity to embrace and draw in the reader. Students of mine never fail to be amazed not only of the story but of Dr. Gonzalez treatment of the subject matter. Hardly a better treatment of the story of Christianity could be imagined in my view. And lastly, it is equally well-suited for the academic classroom, undergraduate and seminary, and use in church or individual settings.
