Penguin Putnam Inc. The Reformation

Winner of the 2004 Wolfson Prize for History, and the Winner of the 2004 British Academy Prize, as well as Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award.

At a time when men and women were prepared to kill - and be killed - for their faith, the Reformation tore the western world apart. Acclaimed as the definitive account of these epochal events, MacCulloch's award-winning history brilliantly re-creates the religious battles of priests, monarchs, scholars, politicians - from Martin Luther to Loyola, from Cramer to Philip II.

Profound historical account presented with skill and magnificence. 832 pages.

This is possibly the clearest, fairest and most scholarly of popular books treating the Reformation. MacCulloh manages to present the complicated and often misrepresented events of the European Reformation in a way that does justice to the passions of the Reformers and their successes while even-handedly describing their missteps. MacCulloh is also skilled at representing clearly what was at stake in theological disputes without simplifying them or cheapening what some outsiders to the movement have otherwise described as petty disagreements in the ivory tower. MacCulloh goes to great lengths to demonstrate that theology mattered intensely to everyday people during the Reformation, which sheds light on why the movement expanded so quickly and had such lasting impact. This is a must-read for the non-religious as well as believers.

The author is without a doubt very well educated - and, yes, - brilliant. However, if you are a born-again, Bible-believing, evangelical Christian - don't waste your money on this book.
