Kregel Publications Rotherham's Emphasized Bible

The Emphasized Bible is a literal, word-by-word translation with added emphasis to further explain the hidden riches of the original languages. This gives the English reader of the Bible the same advantage as the student of Hebrew and Greek—a knowledge of the exact meaning, proper terminology, and linguistic style of the original languages—all readily accessible on each page.

This is a unique tool for biblical study that includes features not found in any other English translation. Rotherman's analysis of the text utilizes numbered divisions to indicate sentence and paragraph structure and indentations to indicate narrative, biblical speech and poetry. The emphasis on particular words or phrases within the text is marked by a unique system of symbols and indentations which indicate the emphasis in the original languages as well as mark transitions from narrative to speech, speech within speech and poetic parallelism.

Comments on alternate readings in the original text are included in brief footnotes. Where various readings exists, the author indicates where the readings differ among themselves thereby affording valuable insights into the transmission of the text.

I am very impressed with this translation being so accurate in many regards to the original Hebrew and Greek languages of the manuscripts. I use several versions and compare to an interlinear, interpreting scripture with scripture. It takes a little practice and study to understand the emphasis notations. I did notice that some of the pages have slightly lighter black font than others, so reading glasses or a magnifier may come in handy for anyone with less than ideal vision. I love this version, it is the version of my choice now.

I would recommend this translation for any serious student of the bible for so many reasons.
Whenever different translations disagree with each other or the Emphasized I've always found the Emphasized to be correct when I have looked it up.
It has a concise but very good Appendix and footnotes.
I wish it was available in Bible Paper and in large print as I turn 6o in several months other than that if I could only choose one translation to use it would be Rotherham's Emphasized Bible!

I'm an 83 year old WWII vet and evangelist... ordained in 1950. This is the best a world of translators has to offer! I've used mine since 1967! My advice; get one and you'll see in about an hour of reading and study exactly what I mean! As soon as I can afford it I'm going to purchase 10 NTs to give to friends and family!

Great work that has stood the test of time. It is still today the most literal translation that I have found. I would recommend this bible to all who are serious bible students. While it is not very easy to read the precise language makes it very effective in conveying the truth of the scriptures. The footnotes are extremely helpful and the introductory articles are insightful as well as accurate. Rotterham's layout is unique and tends to show how beautifully the books of the bible were written. I also like the wide margins that afford much room for my own notes.

While Rotherham's is interesting, it is FAR from a literal translation. I would recommend the newer ESV or even the old ASV 1901 for more literal translation. If anyone thinks this is a very literal translation, they simply haven't compared it to the Greek. Also, the point of Rotherham was not so much (as far as I know) a literal translation but as the name suggests an EMPHASIZED translation.Personally, I don't think it really adds anything.

how can some people be so brilliant? such is the case with mr. rotherham. this is a literal, word for word translation, which sometimes can make reading difficult. not so in this case. somehow, mr. rotherham was able to translate the word for word more accurately than those before him, yet was also able to allow a beautiful, poetic radiance to shine through this entire work.

I really like this Bible, but it is a bit quaint and hard to read. The textual notes are better than most, the translation is very literal, and the author had a very sincere love of the Word. The layout of the text is the best thing about it, indenting the text according to thought. I would recommend it to someone who is serious about studying the Word.

The world needs to know about this Bible. For those who hunger and thrist for the "God-breath" Word, it's here. It is bold, poetic and pure. Yahweh is used instead of Lord and explained, "The Incommunicable Name." Eternal life is "life age-abiding." It shows the poetic parallelism of God's Word. "Poetry is found not only in the Psalms and the Proverbs but throughout the Old Testament."
