Riley is injured in an assault and is now a trauma chaplain at a hospital. But she wants to be an ER nurse again. Jack is a doctor who runs a community clinic for needy patients that the rich neighbors would love to get rid of. The two meet at the hospital and work at the clinic together, and also try to solve an old crime.
I thought this was an excellent book about the medical field. The story is well-written and the mystery was interesting. I'm looking forward to the author's next book.

She's the trust-fund kid, ex-nurse, current chaplain, recovering attack victim searching for a path leading back to her old life, and He's the army reservist, mountain bike riding, skydiving, maverick-y doctor who sews up his own cuts after kneeling on glass while saving a burning man. Of course they are going to fall in love. The bumps along the road are left to provide all the drama, and fortunately for Riley Hale and Jackson Travis, the bumps aren't that bumpy.
Unfortunately, that leaves the reader with a rather flat story, but there are some colorful characters who stand out from the predictable plot line. The message is good. The innuendo and violence falls within the current guidelines for acceptable Christian literature.
If ER was your favorite TV show, you'll probably love this novel. If you are in pursuit of thought provoking literature which provides insight into the human condition and men's souls, then keep pursuing.
Three stars for providing something more portable and more on demand than evening television.

Perfection. That’s how I’d describe this book. Candace Calvert quickly became one of my favorite authors as I enjoyed each of the three books in her Mercy Hospital series. Finally, the first book of her new series became available....and it did not disappoint!! Each character in Trauma Plan has a reality about them that immediately engages the reader. The heroine Riley Hale, from a prominent wealthy family, is an ER nurse who was tragically and violently injured. She struggles through each page to regain her ability to work as an ER nurse. She serves as chaplain for the hospital until the day she can return to the job she truly loves.
Dr. Jack Travis heads up a local clinic. He saves the “down-and-outers”, much to the dismay of the surrounding affluent neighbors. They want him and the unsavory clientele he serves gone....yesterday. Riley ends up as a volunteer at the clinic, where she hopes to prove herself. In Jack’s mind, her family name can give credibility to his clinic. Though their methods and their motives couldn’t be more different, their passion for truly helping others is the same. Jack is prickly, aggressive and lacking in people skills....Riley is gentle, caring and follows the rules. Initial irritation leads to covert interest, and the process is everything you’d hope for. Sometimes funny (clever dialogue!), sometimes heartwarming and romantic, always satisfying. Add clinic resident, Bandy Biggs (Bandy, I love you!!), the wise ol’ rodeo cowboy-turned down and outer-turned believer and permanent clinic volunteer....and you’ve got yourself some great reading time. These characters read like somebody you really know, saying the kinds of things people really say, going through the same kinds of struggles in life and faith that you and I go through. The author drew me in and taught me a thing or two. She even made me want to visit San Antonio and see those pastel colored eggs filled with confetti!!
Trauma Plan is everything I look for in a book. It was smart, humorous, romantic and inspirational. And Candace Calvert will continue to be an author I look for and recommend.

Candace Calvert’s Trauma Plan includes all five. As in her previous books (I reviewed Code Triage), the characters came to life as I read the book. There were times I wished that the story was true - I wanted to pray for those who found themselves in various stages of resistance or danger.
The arrival of a new critical care center designed to meet the needs of the poor and needy near a posh housing addition has many of the residents on edge. It appears that crime (both simple vandalism and more serious activity) is on the increase. Those who oppose Dr. Jackson Travis’ new center express a serious concern for the safety of their neighborhood.
Riley Hale, an experienced Trauma Nurse and, now, Trauma Chaplain, finds herself in the midst of the crisis building around the critical care center. Friends, acquaintances, and patients, also join in the fight - for what is right and in support of the critical care center.
Ultimately, the answer comes as people learn to trust (and in at least one case, not trust) those around them. Faith plays a vital role in the lives of the characters in the story. It is a faith that is planted, lived out, and grows, as Riley, Jack, Vesta Calder, and Bandy Biggs, interact and find the value of faith in their individual lives.
I found the book an interesting read, partly because I spent a year working as a chaplain in a variety of hospital settings as part of my education in ministry. The people that Riley Hale meets and deals with are real - and exist in any hospital setting, or in any setting for that matter, hopital, job, or church.

Riley Hale was a great ER nurse before being cruelly attacked - she was pushed down a flight of stairs and broke her neck. A year later, she still hasn't fully regained the use (to the level she needs to return to her former position) of her dominant arm - and her frustration is mounting.
Dr. Jackson Travis is somewhat of a maverick who runs a local community clinic. This clinic is the source of ire for the upscale neighbors, and they are determined to shut it down.
Cross the paths of these medical professionals, add in a little heiress angst and daredevil doctor along with some excellent supporting characters, and you've got a great story! Although I guessed the "mystery" portion of the plot early on (and I was right), it in no way diminished my enjoyment of this book. It was great to see how she brought it all together. I highly recommend it!

Chaplain Riley Hale is a nurse who after a vicious assault that left her lasting injuries, is trying to get back to her life as an ER nurse. Struggling to prove herself capable, she volunteers at a local free clinic that is not loved at all by it's upscale neighbors. There she meets it's director, Dr. Jack Travis, a gruff man who seems to have a lot of baggage of his own. Desperate to save his clinic, Jack will use any means necessary to keep it open. Even if it means using Riley's family name. Can they both put their trust in God to fight their battles and heal their wounded hearts?
This was the first time I have read one of Candace Calvert's novels; and it definitely won't be my last. This book starts with action right away and doesn't let up until the end. The various trauma scenes through out the book are so well written. Easy enough for the average person to understand the medical jargon but thrilling enough that you can't help but feel like you are right there. The struggles with trusting God that Riley and Jack have are so real and heart wrenching at times. I hope that there will be more in this series and now have to track down her other three novels. I highly recommend this book.

What is it about this medical suspense genre that I love so much? And Candace Calvert in particular! Perhaps it's because I feel like she combines the drama (medical and personal!) of shows like ER or Grey's Anatomy with realistic characters, sweet romance, and intriguing mysteries—all against a backdrop of faith. Trauma Plan is no exception.
Riley desperately wants to return to her former duties as an ER trauma nurse. However, injuries have sidelined her and she feels "stuck" in her job as ER chaplain. When Dr. Jack Travis gives her an opportunity to prove herself and hone her skills at his free clinic, she reluctantly accepts his offer. Between the community trying to shut the clinic down and the tension between Riley and Jack, sparks are flying everywhere! As they get to know each other, a fragile trust forms—and is jeopardized when Jack's past comes out.
Wow. Candace Calvert delivers again in Trauma Plan. Riley and Jack were fantastic characters, and I loved getting both of their perspectives throughout the book. Candace does a great job of creating flawed characters that are likeable yet real. The secondary characters in this novel were excellent as well and at times stole the show. Bandy, the formerly homeless man who helps at the shelter, and his gimpy dog Hobo were wonderful additions to this cast of characters. While the book wasn't as suspenseful as I expected, the romance and faith elements were strong and it worked out to be the perfect mix.
As always I highly recommend this Candace Calvert novel and look forward to reading more in this series! [5 stars]

I know that anybody who reads this review is going to be a reader, so this question should resonate with all of you. Have you ever read a book by an author and at the end of it wanted to smack yourself upside the head and scream, "Why haven't I taken the time to read his/her books before?" Well, that's where I was when I finally put this down a couple of minutes ago. I've had Candace's books in our library for awhile now and never found myself pulling them off the shelf. I can tell you, though, after finishing this book I'll definitely make the time to read her other series.
Riley Hale is coming back from a vicious attack. Dr. Jack Travis feels like his whole life is under attack. Throw in a lovable side-kick and his trusty canine companion, plenty of personal secrets and some well planned criminal mischief and you have yourself the recipe for a terrific story. Riley needs to be cleared by her doctors and plenty of practice to ever think she will be considered for another ER position. Jack just wants to get his low-cost neighborhood clinic up and running and avoid unpleasant run-ins with the residents of the community surrounding the clinic. The neighbors have taken up the "Not In My Back Yard" mentality and are determined to run him off. Once secrets are revealed, secrets that Jack had hope no one would ever find out, will this be the end of Riley and Jack? Will the clinic overcome the obstacles of the neighbors and succeed? When or when will the next book be published? Not going to tell you, you'll have to read the book just like I did :)
The message at church this morning centered around the time when Jesus fed the crowds with the 7 loaves of bread and a few fish from Mark 8. This follows the first time when they fed the multitude with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. In the message, our pastor pointed out that God will teach us again and again until we get the point. I thought of that today when I was reading about Jack. Jack had a personal secret that had shaped his believe in God. Because of this, he never allowed God to become a part of his life again. He filled his life with doing good for others but never built that relationship with Him again. It was only when Riley came into his life and he saw her convictions was he able to entertain a relationship with Him again. How many times do we blind ourselves to situations that we should be learning from, ones that should take us on a better journey with Him? Jack's friend, Bandy, summed it up correctly (hope Candace doesn't mind me plagiarizing from her book), "We all make mistakes, Doc. We're only human. That's where grace comes in!".
Is this book a "man's book"? There are parts of the book where the relationship building between Riley and Jack are the forefront of the story, but it flowed so smoothly with the rest of the storyline. Men will identify with Jack as he was "raised by wolves", so we can all see ourselves in his character. I think any man will enjoy this book, as I did, and look forward to the next book in the series.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Trauma Plan by Candace Calvert
Awww finally another Candace Calvert book! I’ve been waiting on this since set informed her readers the story was in the making, and let me tell you it is well worth the wait! I love Trauma Plan, as well as all of Candace’s other books! Yes I am a Candace fan!
Hospital Chaplin Riley Hale needs to be back in ER at her old nursing job. That’s what she loves to do. But because of an earlier assault, her Doctors haven’t released her to do that job again, and her fellows workers are not sure she is competent enough just yet.
And then there is Dr. Jack Travis. Or could we say drill sergeant Jack? Dr. Travis worked as an ER Dr. and also ran a clinic for those who couldn’t afford high hospital bills. Since the run-down clinic was near a high and mighty sub-division, Jack was constantly being harassed by the rich folks from the wealthy community. This, and other things in Jacks past life cause such deep anger and bitterness in Jack that his fellow workers found him very difficult to be around.
And it seemed that Jack especially had it in for Riley, one thing he really didn’t care for her job as Chaplin at the hospital. He felt it was a total waist of time. Then why did he offer to let her help at the clinic? And Riley working at the clinic throws she and Jack together more. Could there be an attraction between them? Well I for one would like it, but then we will have to wait and see!
There is so much going on in this story that you will not want to put this book down once you start reading it. And with so much going on, we see Candace Calvert’s expert writing ability in full force, because she does a wonderful amazing job of pulling all of the characters and situations together to pen an unforgettable medical drama. And to read all about it, I highly recommend that you go grab a copy of “Trauma Plan” to read and enjoy for yourself.

The blurb sounds really interesting/intriguing, huh? Trust me, when you actually pick this novel up, you won't be disappointed. Candace is an amazing author who knows exactly how to draw in her readers. I think that the development of Jack Travis and Riley Hale was brilliant. Great characters often have troubling pasts and Jack's past surely fits that script. I felt as though his past and story brought me in and kept me reading until the last word of the book. Of course, all of the other major and minor characters personality's shined as well. Especially Bandy Biggs's character. (if you have read this book: Didn't you just love the character Bandy Biggs?)
This is the first medical drama I have read. I half expected a medical scene played out, a little something like this, "Scalpel. Scalpel. Retractor. Retractor. Surgical stapler. Surgical stapler." or maybe a load of medical jargon that forced me to look up terms in a medical dictionary. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to read through this novel and thoroughly enjoy the plot without any unnecessary interruptions.
My favorite books are the one that tug at your heart. The ones that make you silently lift up a prayer for struggling and heartbroken characters (even though you know that they aren't real). I found myself moved by Riley's faith, her constant struggle with disability and her finally learning to trust God and His will for her life. Jack's life story is nothing short of one trial and tribulation after another. When he accepts Christ, his character changes from a bitter, anger management issue plagued person to one who really wants God in His life. Jack learns that God's plans are not a coincidence.
This is the first book I have read by Candace Calvert and I hope it wont be my last. Her writing here emanates good use of imagery. It was peppered with humor and plenty of laughable moments. It was a page turner, plain and simple! I'd rate this book my 5 star seal of approval:)

I love books set in the medical scene. I love medical shows. For some reason, it fascinates me. However, I hate it when people write books set in a medical scene and either write with lots of medical jargon that many people don't understand or they write with no clue about how the medical field works. I had never read anything by Candace Calvert but I was a little hesitant in checking out this book purely because I thought it would be a disaster due to past experiences. I'm so excited to say that this book exceeded my expectations and I fell in love with Candace's writing and with the characters in this book. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out. I really hope that some of the main characters are carried out throughout the entire series. I found myself incredibly sad, yet happy at the ending. Candace is a former ER nurse and has tons of knowledge. However, she does a great job at not including a lot of medical jargon without explaining it and doesn't create unrealistic problems and incidents within the hospital setting. She writes from experience with the main character, as well, which I think enhances the character, Riley.
Riley had an incident that has caused her to stop working in the ER as a nurse. However, that doesn't stop her heart from longing to be back in the ER and she works hard to obtain her goal. Jack is running from some things in his past and has to find a way to clean up his clinic's name from some bad events happening on his property and in the well-to-do neighborhood located next to his clinic. When Jack meets Riley and finds out her last name and her connection to a foundation, he realizes this is just the key. So he offers Riley a chance to work at his clinic, which she jumps on because it's a chance for her to practice her skills. With each other using each other to obtain their goals, romance is bound to happen. However, when Jack's past is dug up, will Riley be able to put her past aside and accept Jack? Or will she really believe that he's done what he's accused of doing? Will anyone be able to help clear Jack's name?
I've already downloaded the first book in one of her other series so I'm excited to start that series now! I'm so glad that I found a writer who feeds my desire to read anything medical and keeps it clean! Thanks Candace!

"Trauma Plan" is a Christian romance novel. I must admit that I thought this story was going to have a bit of mystery as well: who assaulted Riley back when she was injured? We did get some mystery, but it was why Vesta, a secondary character, knew Jack and was afraid to be around him. I was actually more interested in Vesta's struggle to overcome her fears and in the other secondary characters than in Riley and Jack's romance.
I liked Riley, and all the character were complex and acted in very realistic ways. But I felt like I understood Kate's motives behind her attraction to the flattering man better than I understood Riley's attraction to Jack. My opinion of him was more what she said near the end, but perhaps that's because the author let us see inside Jack's head to his true motives for doing some of the "nice" things he did. It took Riley a little longer to see beyond what she wanted to see.
In Calvert's previous novels, I felt like the characters were more involved in dealing with the God issues in their lives throughout the novel so any reconciliation with God that happened felt natural. Jack refused to even consider God until the very end, so it felt sudden to me even if it was believable. I liked Riley's struggle better--trying to get God to give her what she wanted rather than realizing she's exactly where God wanted her to be.
There was no sex. There was a very minor amount of "he cursed" style bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable novel.

I really love the story line - read all of the previous books so didn't feel as though I missed out on content. Couldn't wait to see how Riley would continue to try to return as an ER nurse, but glad she finally realized that God was in control of her future and she finally followed where He was leading her - Chaplaincy & the maverick Doctor! Can't wait for the next installment!

TRAUMA PLAN:GRACE MEDICAL by Candace Calvert is a heart stopping inspirational romance/suspense/medical drama. I liked all the characters,especially,Riley Hale,an ER nurse who had been viciously assaulted and Jack Travis,a Dr. of a small clinic. I liked the romance between the two of them. Riley was always willing to volunteer in the clinic. She loved people.With dangers lurking,protests escalating and with her budding romance with Dr. Jack Travis ,Riley wonders if she should trust her heart with Jack. A good book! Received for an honest review from the publisher.

My review:
I’m always drawn to books that revolve around the world of medicine, and Candace Calvert with ER nurse experience has penned a ‘healthy dose’ in this one. ‘Trauma Plan’ is well-written and keeps you turning pages to find out how all this drama will pan out. The highlights in this book are the wide array of likeable characters: The most endearing ones are Bandy a former homeless rodeo man and his dog, Hobo. Bandy, in the hopes of making him see his need for God, never tires of sharing words of wisdom with his employer, Jack, a rather self-absorbed but kind-hearted doctor. “…you’ll snag more flies with honey, than vinegar, son.” Then there are Riley and Kate, both nurses and good friends, and the mysterious Vesta, an outpatient. What they all have in common, along with shaping this intriguing story, is the fact that they’re harbouring hurts that are festering beneath the surface, begging for healing. I would, however have liked to hear a bit more of Kate’s story, which we only get snippets of. (Maybe the next book will reveal more about her.) If you like hospital drama, suspense and some Bandy-like ‘peanut butter and wisdom sandwiches’ then you’ll want to cosy up with this never-a-dull-moment book.
