The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent is Dr. Erwin Lutzer's newest book, and perhaps one of his most important. Dr. Lutzer has searched Scripture, mined history, and watched current events unfold for the last decades. He combined these areas of expertise to write this book. This book is a panoramic view of politics, world history, Church history, and missionary work as they relate to the Islamic agenda.

We need this book in our time. As Americans we need this book. America is the focus of much attention by the part of Islam that desires to dominate. And America has been sleeping, drifting off to the lullaby of Political Correctness and Tolerance.

When the terrorist attacks of 9/11 occurred, few of us knew what "Jihad" was, or why they were attacking. Now, most Americans know a little about terrorism. And that is good, but not enough. Islam's agenda includes terrorism, but only as one of twelve major steps to world domination.

The leader of the Muslim Brotherhood has proclaimed blatantly that Muslims "must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house by their hands.."

Muslim protestors have said "We will use the Freedoms of the Constitution to destroy the Constitution."

One Muslim leader said "I have no doubt in my mind, Muslims sooner or later will be the moral leadership of America..either we do it now or we do it after a hundred years, but this country will become a Muslim country."

We need this book both as members of a nation where freedom was hard won and valued and as a Church where freedom in Christ is proclaimed, because this is even more important to us as Christians. We are called to reach out to all people in false religions with the saving Gospel of Christ. How do we reach Muslims with the Gospel? How do we speak truth to Muslims in kindness and still oppose Islam's agenda?

The Muslims in this religion are people like us. How do we reach them *as* people?

Dr. Lutzer's pastoral heart shines in this book as he answers this question. "Only love can overcome suspicion and hatred. If you ask former Muslims who converted to Christianity what won their hearts, they often repeat the words of Jesus: 'Love your enemies.' This is so antithetical to Islam that when Muslims encounter Christians who love them, they have no defense."

The eternal question that we ask when addressing Mormons and Jewish people and everyone else must be asked here... How do we speak the Truth in Love?

We must not change the Gospel to avoid offense, but we must not speak harshly and give offense either. And if we leave either Love or Truth behind, we sin. We also fall into one of two errors.

Dr. Lutzer calls these errors the "EXPOSE THE WORST (AND PREACH NO GOSPEL)" error and the "THOU SHALT NOT OFFEND" error. Due to pro-Islamic bias in our government education system and media, very few people take the "EXPOSE" error. The "NO OFFENSE" error is far more popular.

The false doctrine of "Chris-lam" is one of the fruits of this error.

A very important portion of this book is dedicated to addressing "Chris-lam," a merger of Islam and Christianity. (To readers of Narnia, this reminds us of the false religion created to control the people by merging the false "Tash" and the true Aslan, creating "Tashlan.") The idea is deadly. Churches within the US have fallen into it however, with Qurans in the pews and guest Imams speaking to a Biblically illiterate membership. It has been predicted that very Liberal Protestants and Muslims will coalesce as they promote Chris-lam.

One of the pivotal passages in this book is found here "We should not see a dichotomy between a realistic view of our challenges and continuing to be a loving witness to those around us. We must learn from our Christian brothers and sisters in Muslim-dominated countries, who have learned to do both."

As Christians and as Americans we need to understand Islam's theology. What drives Islamists to do what they do, what consumes them?

We need to understand what Islamic words mean- and what the words mean when Islamists are using them. ("Jihad" is now defined as a struggle against personal sin, according to some modern Muslims. According to many Imams however, Jihad is a Holy War for Allah.)

We need to understand what the Quran teaches about Christians and Jews, about Jesus, about the Cross. Why do Muslims destroy the symbol of the Cross and build a mosque when they conquer?

Does the Quran teach War against the Infidel? Is it a book of violence that fuels hatred, or a book of peace and love? How can loving and raging verses be quoted from the same book?

We need to understand why Islamists attack Christians the way they do and how we as a Church respond. We need to be moved in prayer and action for our Christian brethren in Muslim nations. And we need to stop fearing and or hating the Muslims around us and begin ministering to them in practical, Gospel focused ways. That is what Jesus commanded us to do. Let us do it, for His glory. Muslims are no further from the Cross than we were.

The American mind set is so geared toward "live & let live" they we refuse to see what is being destroyed, look at other countries now. We are next unless we read and understand simple truths put forth in this book.

    - 57 Islamic countries exempted from laws made by the UN (United Nations) See OIC or Organization of Islamic Corp. & Cairo Declaration (Why would we accept the UN treaties that become law here? )

    - Islam does NOT allow separation of church & state

    - Islam does NOT allow "freedom of speech," cannot mention that women do not have equal rights

    - Chicago (US city) has "Board of Sharia" now in place

    - 81% of mosque in America known to have jihad literature (What about the unknown ones?)

Read about these little know facts:

    - Mock execution for non-Islamic, Sword placed on neck

    - Pact of "false protection"

    - Tax {dhimmi (servitude) is all over Muslim world w/its jesua tax}

    - Cannot build home on higher ground than Muslim

    - Cannot remain seated if Muslim needs seat

    - Muslim men encouraged to marry non-Muslim women

    - Muslim females forbidden to marry non-Muslin men

The list goes on but the media does NOT want you to know more.

The Islamic use of "freedoms" to climb ladder to power is lived out in the news. Next step after power is gained is the destruction of "FREEDOM LADDER," so no others can share or have power. Look at recent history of Brotherhood in Egypt.

(Remember Islam does NOT allow separation of church and state, so Shariah Law rules.)

Our Constitution would then be null & void, so would UN

Treaties. No longer could Americans live and let live, much less proclaim any other religion- Christian, Buddhist , Hindu, atheist or other.

Granted, I have not read all of the recent books showing up in the Christian marketplace on Muslim evangelism, but I was greatly impressed by Erwin Lutzer's "The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent." Lutzer and his research partner, Steve Miller, have compiled a wide range of supporting material that is combined with a contemporary application of our Lord's seven letters to the Revelation churches in order to demonstrate the Islamic threat to America and the contemporary Western church. These sources are well annotated throughout the book, and the author has provided a selected bibliography for the reader. What is missing is an index and a glossary of Islamic terms that can be easily referenced. Those omissions be quickly forgiven, however, because of the informed content of this volume. What sets this book apart from so many others on the topic is Lutzer's pastoral approach. He tells us not only why Islam is so damning in its doctrine and dangerous in its practice, but he offers practical suggestions for the church to be able to face those challenges biblically. At the same time, this is not a "how to" book. Lutzer is realistic in discussing the grave threat posed by radical Islam and calls upon local churches to prepare for the possibility of real persecution. He compares the current situation involving Islam with the rising threat of Naziism in pre-World War II Germany. Nevertheless there is hope for those who are willing to count the cost and stand firm for Jesus Christ, those willing to reach out in love and not fear. The author calls upon all Christians to become informed regarding Islam beyond the reports presented by the biased mainstream media, as well as to learn how to best relate the Gospel to Muslims we work with or live near. This book is an excellent place to start!

Review: The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent by Erwin W. Lutzer is a very encouraging and balanced viewpoint of how Christians can engage instead of fear Muslims. Most Muslims in the U.S. and around the world are not radicals, but the fundamentalist Muslims (Islamists) are pushing an agenda to Islamize America.

Lutzer gives lessons for today's churches and ends each chapter with a salvation testimony from a Muslim. The book is very positive in assessing that Christ and the church will triumph in the end. However, the church needs to busily engage Muslims with the gospel by showing our love, compassion, and boldness in the Scriptures. Jesus Christ is the Messiah and has not been superseded by Muhammed. Allah and God of the Bible are very different.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is concerned about our churches and tolerance of Islam in our schools' textbooks and guidelines. Lutzer gives examples from European history how accepting and conforming to those who are intolerant of other religions only promotes intolerance and persecution.

My only constructive criticism is for Lutzer to include the historical section of Islam's conquest of the 7th century to an earlier chapter. He doesn't include much history until the seventh chapter. Chapter ten was very enlightening; Lutzer gave many positive and practical suggestions detailing how Christians can grow in their awareness of the spiritual conflict and what they can do to stem the tide of Islamic inroads into our nation. Dr. Lutzer did a great job of research and writing to give really good, factual information about Islam's war with Christianity over the last several hundreds of years. It is a must read for every Christian to really understand the spiritual warfare that is happening against Christianity. Until recent years, the average American Christian was not informed of the threat against our Christian and civil freedoms posed by the Muslim faith. It is a must read to propel Christians to prevail in prayer against this long standing spiritual opposition to the Christian faith. Great Book!
