When I saw the title of this DVD Bible curriculum, I knew it was for me.
Cause I know I have issues.
I'm not the only one, right?
So I thought, "Sign me up for this review!"
I wanted to learn myself how I could better combat all of those "little foxes" that quickly become Mount Vesuvius in my life before you know it.
When the DVD/book combo arrived, I quickly perused the topics :: control, insecurity, comparison, fear, anger, and unforgiveness. I then promptly decided which ones I THOUGHT I really needed to work on. Then God totally rocked my world by challenging me on all the opposite topics from my internal plan.
Basically, every lesson was important.
Every topic is a deal-breaker in how we connect to God and the world around when we do not allow the Lord to work it through our lives.
At first I was thrown off guard because I was not expecting REAL stories and a REAL small group experience RIGHT on the DVD. I was not sure how I felt about it at first and then Nicole Unice's words just consistently spoke truths near and dear to my heart. The women on the video were transparent and open about the hurdles they have and are dealing with in their own stories. It touches you deep. In addition, Nicole style is disarming at first, and then I realized she is a counselor and that is why. Her words and viewpoint launch from a heart to pour life into hurting women everywhere because it is what she has dedicated her life to for the past twenty-five years.
Also, as a woman who has led small groups for almost fifteen years, I love the layout of the curriculum :: testimony, time to journal/respond IN Bible study together{so no homework...yay!}, and a short fifteen minute focus on the Word to give us hope for the HOW we can apply HIS principles to our lives. Spanning eight weeks, this study is great for women who want to get real and delve into those pesky issues that plague us our whole lives...BUT this is a really great study to do at home alone...with the book OR with the DVD alone.

She's Got Issues, Nicole Unice (book and DVD)
I got this book and had to smile at the cover. It really says it all. We all have issues - but shhhhh.....we don't want any one to know we have issues. SOoooo.... we cover it up under that "good Christian girl" facade and plaster on a smile and go through the motions giving all the right "churchy" responses to life while struggling to maintain our "Perfect" exterior we are falling apart on the inside. And so we struggle on the inside - silently - thinking we are all alone in this crisis of identity and self-worth. In this book Nicole Unice delves into the issues of being a woman in today's hectic, face-paced society. She pulls back the layers of lies that the enemy has heaped upon us, exposing the truth and setting us free to be who God intended us to be. This is excellent for a small group experience - and your small group will definately walk away changed. Also - it will bring to light things that women just don't talk about - letting some see for the first time they are not alone in the issues they face. A small group will leave with a strong group of supporters and friends as they face head-on the issues in their individual lives. I will say that this author has a candid and personal writing style that makes the reader feel as if they are visiting with a friend about everyday stresses and secrets. Thanks so much to the publisher for the free review copy of the book and DVD. I would highly recommend this to all church groups.

In She's Got Issues, counselor and mom Nicole Unice takes a look at five (and a half) common issues: control, insecurity, comparison, fear, and anger (along with its cousin, unforgiveness). She says that all women struggle with at least one of these problems and some of us deal with more than one of them. I know I have them all, although some are not as big of a deal as others. I enjoyed the way she has a couple of chapters to dig more indepth with each category, and that she includes quizzes and other personal assessment tools. Some of the personal stories made me chuckle, and a few made me cringe...when I recognized my own behavior.
There is a dvd group experience that goes along with the book to make this an excellent small group Ladies Bible Study. I also found a Participation Guide online. So with these tools, along with your Bible, a journal, and a pen...you are all set up to begin to confront the issues that are holding you back in your relationship with God, others, and with yourself. Naturally, she doesn't promise that we will resolve all, or become little robots (no visions of becoming like The Stepford Wives, please), but Nicole does help you discover renovate and refine the person you are.
In compliance with the Federal Trade Commission, I want to say that I received complimentary copies of the materials used for this review from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to make a favorable review, but only asked for my opinion.

If you're honest, you will agree that we've all got issues. None of us is perfect. Sanctification is a life-time process. In this six-session teaching DVD based on her book (same title), Nicole Unice addresses six issues that most women struggle with: control, insecurity, comparison, fear, anger, and unforgiveness. I love Nicole's candid and casual approach. While I watched the DVD, I felt like I was being invited into her living room along with all the women there (on the screen) listening to her talk.
Each session starts with a conversation between Nicole and a different woman who is dealing with a different issue. After that, there is a pause for participants to write their thoughts in their journals. Next, Nicole teaches in a small group setting. She shares from her own experiences and she draws us to the Scriptures to find answers and encouragement. According to Nicole, you won't become issue-free after finishing the DVD but you will be closer to Jesus and learn to live victoriously in Him. I agree.
I highly recommend this Christ-centered, Biblically-sound DVD curriculum. It's an excellent tool for churches and women's groups. It includes leader's guide and participant's guide.

Nicole is very easy going and her approach to the topic iv very accessible to most women, so you feel more of sharing a discussion with her, versus being spoken to, with the video. She is real- a wife and a mother, of similar age to most women who would be in the bible study groups. The video is made for 6 hour long sessions, which is a really good time frame for most small women's groups. The issues discussed are those all women are familiar with:
Control
Insecurity
Comparison
Fear
Anger
Unforgiveness
Nicole is very candid and urges women to open up to each other, share their issues and burdens (many of which are holdovers from middle and high school years), and to follow a Christian life, through discussion, bible reading and her book as a guide (it has wonderful stories and bible passages related to the issues). The included journalling and daily scripture thoughts will provide introspection and a way to do so. By letting 'go' of the control we live under, we can be set free for a more stress-free life!
If you are looking for something different, fresh and modern for your bible study group, this is the book/dvd curriculum for you!

She's Got Issues:Seriously Good News For Stressed-Out, Secretly Scared Control Freaks Like Us, is a DVD small group study designed by Nicole Unice to help its participants understand that the everyday issues of life do not have the right to steal their joy.
Nicole utilizes her experience as a counselor, a church ministry leader, and an everyday, ordinary mom to help women deal with debilitating issues within their lives. The topics covered within this DVD small group study, control, insecurity, comparison, fear, anger, and unforgiveness, are commonly found within the lives of many within today's society.
Each 15-20 minute lesson is packed with biblical accuracy, wrapped around fantastic teaching. Each lesson starts off with Nicole interviewing a woman who has struggled with the issue that is to be discussed in the lesson. As the discussion comes to an end, participants are given time for journaling before the whole group is presented with the lesson. An added feature is a printable participant's guide on the DVD that enhances the time of study.
Because of its dynamic teaching, this study is recommended for utilization in a ladies' small group setting.

There are a lot of Women's bible study video curriculum's out there, and many of them are fine for a group that mainly wants to just spend time with each other and have fun. But if there is genuine desire to grow spiritually, then it is a bit harder to find a good group study for you. It is a balance of real life questions and looking at uncomfortable realities of who we are but doing it in a way that feels safe for those in it. That is the target of Nicole Unice's book and DVD, and I think that it was a success.
Right from the introduction, she acknowledges the fact that this does not have a simple self-help formula of "do these five things and this will happen in your life", but instead seeks to look into the things in our life that hinder us from experiencing the kind of faith life God intends us. It is encouraging us to face the issues we have that we don't like to admit to, even to ourselves.
Maybe you are a planner (control freak), you get to look at how there are some things we are supposed to take charge of, and some things that we are not, all from a solid scriptural base. And then there are some practical outflow of how to move in the right direction. The following studies flow out of this first one in the same way, looking at our insecurity, comparison, fear, anger and unforgiveness. I would be surprised if there are any of us who do not need to look at some of these issues, and the way they are gone through is very helpful.
Some highlights in this study are the following: there is a lot of very powerful scripture that deals with these issues; the way the DVD studies are created, it is laid out very clearly for groups and builds in times for prayer, journaling and even doing some of the background work in the group if your group is not able to do the work beforehand; I like that there is a pdf on the dvd that can be printed off for all who are working through this study; the heart that comes through the study that speaks of a genuine desire to see people grow.

Ever been surrounded by a group of women who made you feel very put together? Their lives were in such shambles that you praised God that you weren't like them. Or what about the opposite, a group of ladies who all wore the June Cleaver facade? On the outside looking in, everything was perfect?
Then there are those rare groups that contain real women. No masks or brick walls allowed. With naked emotions everyone comes to the group broken and in need of a Savior.
She's Got Issues: Seriously Good News for Stressed-Out, Secretly Scared Control Freaks Like Us is that book/curriculum study that tears down the need to be perfect and goes straight to the heart of the issues all women face - control, insecurity, comparison, fear, anger, and unforgiveness. Who doesn't struggle with these aspects of life on at least some degree? This is a study written by Nicole Unice that forces women to look deep within.
Because I was traveling by myself, I slipped the She's Got Issues DVD Curriculum into the van's player and listened to the six sessions as I drove. I am so thankful for this time because I was able to focus on the many topics that hit home. The approximately 20 minute sessions made me hungry for more even while the topics pulled up characteristic flaws that I try to hide. Because of the length of my trip, I was able to replay a few of the sessions. Practical points to peel back the onion and get to the core of the issues.
After listening to the video, I began reading the book. (A little backwards, I know, but it is what it is.) Unlike many Women's Bible study curriculum, the DVD wasn't just a synopsis of what the book contained. Instead it was an overview and tied the topics up very well.
Each topic is covered by two chapter. The first chapter explains what the issue is with the second chapter covering practical ways to release the issue to God. At the end of each chapter is a prayer, journaling exercise, group discussion questions, and a code to view a video of Nicole discussing the chapter. (These videos are different from the DVD sessions.)
The fourteen chapters contain a lot of information and scripture. In some way, I felt like I was reading a book of the Bible written by Paul - lots of commas and deep thoughts. I found myself having to reread paragraphs to grasp all that the saturated sentences contained. This isn't a bad thing just understand that due to the writing and depth of topics this study isn't going to be a fast read.
What I love about this study is how Nicole helps you figure out the "why" behind our issues. Because, it is when we realize why that we can start to allow the Holy Spirit to move within us. Her book also includes quizzes and assessment tools to help you narrow down the problems.
In the next coming months, I will be blogging points from Nicole's study as I glean through the topics and wrestle with the issues that I face in my own life. Maybe someday soon, I will be able to go through the study with a group of ladies! But for now, I will continue to pour through during my personal quiet time.
Thank you to Tyndale for allowing me to review this book and DVD.

We all have issues

This was a very interesting read and DVD curriculum. Nicole Unice does a great job of pinpointing 6 key areas in the lives of women that we have issues with. The 6 are control, insecurity, comparison, fear, anger, and unforgiveness. I knew I had issues with comparison, but honestly never have taken the time to figure out how to overcome that particular issue.
In the book, Nicole lays out the issue in the first of two chapters that cover that particular issue. The next chapter then is how to help you overcome that particular issue. I don't struggle with all 6 issues, but I found that I was able to pull something from every chapter to help in my walk with Christ as well as possibly help others who struggle with that issue. At the end of each chapter Nicole gives you the opportunity to journal about what you just read, which I think is a brilliant idea. Journaling helps solidify what you've learned and can actually reveal things you didn't know you struggled with. It doesn't necessarily come easily, but that's why you must pray asking that God will reveal to you what is in your heart that He wants changed.
The DVD curriculum was not exactly what I expected it to be. I've done several DVD Bible studies and was left a little wanting. It may have been because I wasn't doing it in a group setting, but reviewing this by myself. I felt that Nicole repeated herself from her book, which I know repetition is great...but I was wanting her to possibly divulge a little more or go a little bit deeper.
Each lesson was only 15-20 minutes long. It starts off with Nicole interviewing a lady who has struggled with the particular issue that you just read about. At the end of that, there is a little journaling time that I thought would be better in a group setting than in an individual setting. After that Nicole then talks just a little bit about the issue and then it's done. There is a participant's guide on the DVD that you'll need to get in order to do the journaling prompts during the DVD time as well as know what chapters to read for the upcoming lesson.
Overall I think this would be an excellent group study with the DVD. I do feel the book can be read by itself without watching the DVD. I do recommend this to any and all women as we can all relate in one way or another to the issues that are talked about in the book and DVD.
The DVD book and curriculum were sent to me by the publisher for free for my review opinion.

Nicole Unice puts together a great curriculum! She understands the common issues that most (if not all) women face at some point or another -- control, comparisons, anger, and more. It's great because it's just for us normal gals. We're moms, wives, volunteers, bloggers, career women, and we're doing it well ...but we have issues! Nicole really gets into the minds of women and what their experiencing in order to help with these everyday struggles.
I love this curriculum for several reasons -- one being that she has a suggestion of how you can incorporate the "homework" right into the lesson instead of sending the women home to do it. Right now I have homework for a bible class that I haven't touched in days. I love the practical and realistic approach that Nicole takes.
Not only does the book, DVD, and participant handout challenge me to want to get a grasp of my issues but it has inspired me to do a bible study at church. And yes, of course, using this material! As a Lutheran we are often critical of studies and such that are from outside of our denomination because we want to hold close to our doctrine (for good reason!) but given the topic choice, Nicole's approach, and her firm grasp of the bible I'd recommend this to any Christian. It's truly a study that the women can get together, share, and grow spiritually.

I had the pleasure of reviewing Nicole Unice's great book She's Got Issues back in July. Tyndale House Publishers then gave me the opportunity of reviewing the companion DVD Group Study. So glad they did.
I consider myself a connoisseur of DVD Bible Studies. I have lead a bi-weekly women's Bible Study for the past five years. We have enjoyed Beth Moore, Kay Arthur, Priscilla Shirer, Ann Graham Lotz, Angela Thomas, and Jennifer Rothchild. So I reviewed this new DVD study through that lens.
I have to say, I loved it. I can't wait to schedule this one for our women's group.
I really liked the format. The first 10 minutes of the video lesson is an interview with one women who has struggled with that lesson's topic (control, insecurity, comparison, fear, anger or unforgiveness). Then the group is encouraged to privately journal on some provided question prompts. Then Nicole teaches on the topic for about 15 minutes. Finally there are great discussion questions to allow for everyone in the study to get involved and share.
Nicole's style to really easy to watch and listen to.
The topics in this DVD are relevant and the teaching has good 'meat on the bone'. I am pretty tough on women's studies that are what I call, too fluffy. This isn't one of them. While the teaching is brief by Beth Moore standards it's solid. Plus these issues require discussion so the extra time is great. Ideally the study should be about 1.5 hours a session to get the most from the DVD and discussion.
So this one gets a big thumbs up from me.

Recently I got the opportunity from Tyndale House to read/watch and review their new DVD curriculum series for women called She’s Got Issues by Nicole Unice. The past month I read the book and watched the DVD. This curriculum is designed to be used in a women’s small group type of setting and is a 6 week course.
I really enjoyed the book and the journaling prompts that are in it. I even more enjoyed the DVD because there is just so much you can get from hearing the author speak about some of what she has written. I advise that if you pick this up that you read the book along with watching the DVD. She refers back to the book many times and in my opinion a lot of what she talks about goes into more detail in the book. Even though watching the DVD is good you really NEED the book in this particular study.
There are 6 main topics that are discussed in this series; Control, Insecurity, Comparisons, Fear, Anger and Unforgiveness. There are lots of journaling prompts, group discussion questions and self evaluations within the pages. There is also a list of additional resources for you to use. On the DVD there is both a participants guide and a leader’s guide that can be printed.
I do recommend this book and curriculum because we all know that we have issues. Keep in mind that as you read through this is NOT a quick fix thing. She talks about us needing to realize that we have issues and as we grow in God we can be changed from the inside out. Real true change happens over time and getting to know our Father is where this REAL change will start to take place.
If you are looking for a good study for your church’s women’s group I do recommend She’s Got Issues.
*I received the book and DVD from Tyndale House in exchange for my honest opinion.
