Gunn Productions IndoctriNation, DVD

Looking at both the origins and practical results of state-run education, Indoctrination takes you on a cross-country tour that's about the decline of American Christianity as well as the decline of schools. Featuring interviews with Christian teachers who couldn't teach Christianity to their students, notable homeschooling advocates Kevin Swanson, Samuel Blumenfeld, John Taylor Gatto, and homeschool celebrities Ken Ham, R.C. Sproul Jr. and Doug Phillips, filmmaker Colin Gunn accumulates conservative perspectives that will lead you straight to their conclusion: that Christians should never put their children into public schools.

Focusing on the Marxist associations with the origins of schools, issues of sex education, physical safety from gunmen, whether Christians in schools can ever be "salt and light," whether public schools are politically neutral, and finally whether the public school system can be redeemed, Indoctrination dives into the heart of the Homeschool-Only debate with this part-documentary, part-testimonial DVD. 102 minutes on DVD.

Americans are always shocked when what is thought to be good is actually bad. Example: Sugar is sweet, but causes tooth decay and may lead to heart problems. So if schools are thought to be good but are actually causing our children to bow to false gods, then we really need to take a serious look at why we send them there. One well know professional states that a "child-believer" should be in every classroom; that is not a burden to place on a child that is growing, maturing in every aspect. I have known college age students that could NOT deal with the ridicule from teachers and classmates. Just read the newspaper to see what is done to adults-teachers that bring God or a Bible into the conversation in a public school. Maybe your strong articulate child can defend the faith, but what else will they we forced to endure?
Once a mom told me she placed her child in public school to witness. The child's teacher was well known in the community for worshipping a false god, actually an idol. I ask the mom, "How do you refute the teaching of that false god or belief system?" She as an adult could not do it, yet put her child under that persons's authority and teaching. It is time parents realize where their duty lies!

The documentary involves Colin Gunn, a homeschooling dad who hails from Scotland, loading his family up on a schoolbus and going around the country to talk to all kinds of people. Some are well-known in homeschooling circles, like John Taylor Gatto, Ken Ham, and Voddie Baucham. As a homeschooler for the past dozen years, they really didn't say anything I haven't heard before.
For me, it was the stories told by regular people that hit me. A very popular elementary school teacher. A recent graduate of a highly rated public school. Another teacher. A regular working-man type of dad. A school principal. People who DO know what is going on in the schools.
The main message of the documentary is basically that as Christians, we have to get our kids out of the public school system. That's a message that makes me squirm. I mean, we have made the decision to homeschool, but I struggle enough with my family, you know? I'm not sure that I'm capable of making any kind of recommendation about schooling choices to anyone else.
But one thing I do feel comfortable saying is: "You have to be aware." I think this documentary can really, really make you think. To think long and hard about what the real situation is for our kids in the schools.
I know, the tendency is to believe that these things are not happening here. People just northwest of me, up in Denver, believed that. It's been over a decade since Columbine, but the last few months have been challenging. The movie theater shooting in Aurora this summer. The abduction of a sweet 10 year old girl just this past week.
For me, these drive home the point that horrible things are happening in my community.
The DVD runs just 102 minutes, and honestly I think every Christian parent should see it.

I had a very hard time with this book.
Just being honest.
Indoctrination: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity is a companion book to the DVD by the same title. I have watched it and it is just as disturbing as the book.
Disturbing, however is not bad.
In this book and accompanying DVD, the filmmakers and editor have compiled a combination of first-hand interviews and article/book excerpts into one vast resource regarding the history and state of public education in America.
Learning more about the history of American public education was quite enlightening to me...and disturbing as well.
I am one of the many Americans who has truly no choice (due to poor past financial decisions) other than to send my child to a public school. He has been blessed with great teachers and a great education thus far, but don't think for a minute that I don't have concern for what he hears or will hear in the classrooms he attends - both from teachers and other students. Thus the reason I try my best to diligently #TeachtheTruth in our daily lives in whatever ways God allows and leads me to.
Still, the government-guided school system has my child for more total, undivided time than I do if you factor in all of the other things that go on before and after school.
IndoctriNation brings to light how deliberate my situation is.
No, I do not deliberately choose to let the God-forsaking United States government indoctrinate and mold my child into becoming the kind of humanistic (man-centered) citizen they want to create, but they do deliberately structure our education system in such as way that what I described is highly likely to happen to most children who spend 12 formative years in this government created, government led system. If you don't think that is true, I challenge you to read my review of Already Gone by Ken Ham& Britt Beemer and read that book for more detailed survey results that prove it. Maybe many of the people who work in or have children in this system don't agree with that statement, but just a few pages into the book IndoctriNation will bring to light some things that were put in place many many years ago which have us already socialized in ways we don't even realize.
Again, though, I had a very tough time with this book. Not just for reasons I have described but also because the filmmakers and editor, in their notes of introduction to the book and even a couple of the authors of book portions, conveyed a tone that I did not agree with. I understand their passion for conveying this important message, but in their words some of them seemed to forget about parents like me. They wrapped all parents of publicly educated children into this package group of being "deceived" and lazy / careless about our children's education.
One such statement stands out that I would like to rebut, if I may.
Editor Charles LaVerdiere states, "Previous generations of 'We the People' gladly handed over their children, first to the one-room schoolhouse then to the government, all for convenience."
If anyone in those previous generations was like me, I can say that not all "gladly" handed their children over and likely not so much for "convenience" as much as out of necessity. I struggle internally daily with having to be far less involved with my child's daily schooling than I would like (not even being able to be on campus at his public school as much as I would like due to work obligations). And the public school system is not so much a convenience to me as it is a necessity. Poor financial decisions of my past when I was younger and even single have affected me and continue to affect our family in a way that we are unable to afford living on one income nor can we even afford a private school (not that private schools are the perfect option either).
All that said, I stuck with the book and was very thankful I did. MANY important facts brought to light in the nearly 400 pages of this book as well as the nearly 2 hours of DVD that accompanies it. You truly should delve into this one if you have children of any age in or near "school days."
So...have I got you thinking...?

This documentary gives an excellent eye opening experience for all parents. I thought I was well educated on the school system, but my eyes have been opened to just how far we have fallen. Every parent who is wanting to raise their children in a Christian environment should watch this video.

I can only agree with the other reviews of this film; it is essential that every believer see this movie. Homeschooling is looked down upon by even believers, but this movie shows Biblically and practically the reason Christians should be concerned about public education. Using interviews, news footage, and historical detective work, we see the anti-God agenda of the public school and its roots grounded in socialism, atheism, and a spirit of antichrist. I know this sounds over the top, but ask yourself, when did God command us to send our children to unbelieving strangers to teach them the world, morals, and knowledge when they lack the relationship with God to rightly discern any of those things? This film is startling the way it pokes holes in that hot air balloon of "send our children and adults into the public school system to be a light." This is well done, thought provoking, and absolutely frightening when you begin to see the public education system through Biblical eyes. I have shared this with many believers and I can share this personally; my sister-in-law is an unbelieving teacher (a good one at that), and she even shares many of the truths of this movie; our school system is failing the children and churning out ungodly, uneducated wards of the state. This is an important film to wake us up as Christians to the dangers awaiting our children in public school; please buy it; you will be schocked on some levels, but grateful that you know the truth.

This video is amazing. I believe it should be viewed by every parent. It gives a history of education that helps you understand the school system better and opens your eyes to what is going on in the schools. The mix of personal stories, interviews, commentary, and illustrations made it interesting and thought-provoking. I have already loaned it to a friend and will continue to share it.

IndoctriNation was awarded the Jubilee Award for Best Documentary at the 2012 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival, and was the runner-up for 'Best of Festival' Jubilee Award -- with its $101,000 cash prize -- which went to Courageous.
Cal Thomas had this to say about IndoctriNation: "Every Christian parent with a child in a government school should see this [movie] and be forced to confront their unwillingness to do what Scripture requires for the children on loan to them by God. A mass exodus from government schools is the only way to preserve the souls and minds of our children."
Ted Baehr, CEO of MovieGuide said: "This is the most important issue facing the Body of Christ, an issue that must be addressed and put to rest forever. IndoctriNation is an extremely important movie. Every church in America should show IndoctriNation. Every Christian should show IndoctriNation to their friends."

I was an earlier supporter of this movie and was able to view it on line before it became available for the public to purchase. As a former public elementary school teacher, I agree with what is in this documentary. Too many parents have not a clue of what is really happening in their children's classrooms, and the values that are being taught and held in high esteem. This video was able to put into words what I had thought and witnessed and fought for while teaching, and is the reason why I chose to stay home with my son. It is also a driving force in why we have decided to homeschool. What is upsetting is that it was easy for me to tell that the the teacher and principal spot lighted in the video were good teachers and really cared about their children. In my heart, I knew that they wouldn't be in the public education system for much longer-having been there and done that. I have given my copy to pass around to family and friends, hoping that more people will see the reality of what happens in our schools and praying that it will help to spur a change.

I think that every Christian needs to see this movie. Regardless of how you educate your children (homeschool, public or private school), we all need to be made aware of what is happening in the public school system. I knew it was bad, but I didn't know just how bad it was. If we are willing to fight over what version of the Bible to read, then we need to be willing to fight for our children's minds.

Every believer should watch this documentary! We have turned a blind eye to what the culture is teaching our children and just keeping our fingers crossed that they will turn out "ok". This DVD covers the history of education and the men that have influenced the schools up until the current day. It discusses some of the inappropriate material that is covered in schools that you may not be aware of unless your child tells you or you are one of those parents that reads every book that comes home from school and keeps close tabs on the curriculum being used, if not, you will never know. It is too late to change the gov. school system! This was also discussed in an interview from a Christian gentleman who tried to do something. The real goal of our educational system is not to educate but to indoctrinate! Our countries ranking in education compared to other countries show this to be true.

What a good movie! It makes me thankful that we decided to homeschool our children! There are issues discussed that I wouldn't feel comfortable letting my children watch at this point, so parents may want to preview first to make the decision if their kids are mature enough to watch all parts of it! I think it's a must see!!! Thank you God for all involved with the making of this film!!
