P & R Publishing Gospel-Powered Parenting: How the Gospel Shapes and Transforms Parenting

Not your everyday book on parenting, Gospel-Powered Parenting is a practical guide to parenting that highlights the differences the Gospel makes in the lives of parents as much as it does about parenting techniques. Farley talks about the spiritual basis of parenting, a subject most books ignore. Paperback.

Read this book and loved it. Great and helpful resources for raising godly children. Most parenting books teach parents how to raise moral yet godless children who have no real understanding of, or faith in, the gospel of Jesus Christ and therefore who are incapable of true godliness. The principles in the book will teach children to have a proper fear of God and love for the gospel. Yes, the author advocates spanking (not as the only or even primary means of discipline) and yes his view of the roles of men and women line up with the Biblical model of make headship in the home. If you desire to know what God's desire and design for parenting is read this book. If you want to raise your children according to the latest psychological theory (which is always changing and has failed miserably) then don't read this book.

The above quote is lifted from a review by Tim Challies. Reading this book will give you a real 'duh!' moment - especially if you have been a parent for some time. Farley does an outstanding job of getting to the nub of of Christian parenting. This is a deeply philosophical book that gives you the foundational concepts to apply to each parenting opportunity as it arises. That doesn't mean that it is a difficult book to read, far from it, it just means that you will be changed by reading it.

This book is down-right dangerous!

I cannot warn you strongly enough to stay away from this book. It's title is appealing, but the content of the book is outrageous and dangerous. Farley has a warped view of the husband and wife relationship and condones spanking as the main form of discipline. Women are viewed as merely the "assistants" in parenting, while the men are the head and responsible for making all of the decisions. In the wrong hands, this book will promote a legalistic view of God, marriage and parenting. If followed, I believe the advice in this book will turn your children away from God, not towards Him. Farley has somehow forgotten or never experienced the fact that GOD IS LOVE, not fear, not punishment.
My husband and I were asked to lead a discussion of this book for parents in our church. With no exception, every parent in the group had a similar negative reaction to the book's message. I fear that this book could do great damage in the hands of the uninformed and those looking for a magic formula in parenting.
