Sir Ted5 Stars Out Of 5Best book recently read.December 19, 2014Sir TedQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I heard Gracie Burnham speak on November 14, 2014 in Fort Pierce VOM conference in the MFI Hanger at the airport. It was a thrilling well written personal experience story. I was moved, I laughed, I wept reading this book. (Great for a guy) I bought ten copies to give to non-Christian friends. Carol5 Stars Out Of 5June 6, 2003CarolOnce I picked up book - I was pressed to continue reading at every opportunity. Very moving reading. I think it is important for us to come face to face with the questioning of our faith during these end times. Is my faith strong enough to overcome, endure, and stand firm through such hardships. (Faith building reading). Also, great insite on the way these kidnappers "radical Islam" understands or views their actions. I cried alot. May God strengthen and deliver all those persecuted for Christ.

K Johnson5 Stars Out Of 5Touching and inspiring account of a missionary couple held for ransom for a year in the Philippian junglesMay 30, 2022K JohnsonQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Gracia Burnham recounts her year as a hostage in the jungles of the Philippians. The book begins with the middle-of-the-night raid by Muslim terrorists at the resort where Gracia and Martin were celebrating their anniversary. Seventeen hostages were taken by boat to the jungle on another island and held for ransom.
As the book continues, Gracia reflects back on meeting and dating Martin in Bible college where she was planning to be a missionary and Martin a pilot/mechanic. For 17 years Martin and Gracia (and eventually their 3 children) served with New Tribes Missions where Martin was a pilot/mechanic servicing areas in the Philippians.
Throughout the year in captivity, some of the hostages are released when ransomed, some are hurt or killed, and some are even forced to marry one of their captors. During the ordeal, Martin and Gracia encourage each other to keep their faith and trust Jesus. Though they consider attempting to escape, they never really have an opportunity that could be successful. Most nights, Martin is handcuffed and chained to a tree or similar.
Daytime is spent moving through the jungle from place to place to avoid the Philippian militia that is searching for them. Unfortunately, the Philippian militia is not well trained for this work, and their incompetence results in hardship and physical danger for the captives. Conditions are harsh, food is scarce, and the couple lives in constant threat of death. Month after month passes and the hope of ransom or rescue remains slim. Negotiations are hindered by the 911 terrorist attacks in the US.
Eventually, after more than a year with the terrorists, the Philippian militia blasts their way into the camp, shooting all of the remaining hostages and some of the kidnappers, though many escape. The only hostage to survive is Gracia, who plays dead to keep from being forced to flee with the remaining terrorists, while listening to her beloved Martin take his final breath. She is rescued and evacuated to a hospital and eventually back home to be reunited with their kids and family in the US.
Their love for God and desire to be faithful even during horrific circumstances is a testimony to their character and faith. The tenderness of the love between Gracia and Martin is inspiring and makes his death all the more tragic. I highly recommend this book, especially for those experiencing difficult times and tragic situations.
