Katherine and her husband had opened a boarding house in the 1870s in Baker City, Oregon. Then her husband died leaving her with their two daughters to rear and a boarding house to run. Katherine was still adjusting to this new normal when her mother came to live with her following the death of her other daughter. I must say that I would not wish the likes of Frances Cooper on anyone. The woman had always shown favoritism toward her older daughter and had constantly criticized and found fault with Katherine. She was exceptionally adroit at wielding a tongue that was sharper than a two-edged sword to cut down Katherine or anyone else who disagreed with her. How could Katherine ever manage to keep peace in her household for her daughters and the boarders with her mother always on the attack? Nothing Katherine ever did suited Frances. She was quite vocal in her dislike for another matronly lady who had come to stay there with her niece. She was absolutely opposed to Micah and his son, Zachary, living there while Micah was recovering from injuries suffered when his livery and home burned to the ground. The woman was insufferable and seemed oblivious to the damage she was doing. I am only scratching the surface at this point. The saddest part is that she considered herself a fine upstanding Christian. If all of the other characters had been like her, it would be a stretch to classify this as a Christian book. Not to give the wrong impression, the book contains no bad language, compromising scenes, or indecency. The simple fact is that her treatment of other people was horrible and did not set the proper example for her grandchildren. You must read this book to truly appreciate how things played out. Most of the other characters more than offset the negative example of Frances.

I really appreciate the "realness" of the characters created by Miralee Ferrell as they work their way through every day life facing heartache and loss, hope and despair, frustration and anger, forgiveness and healing; circumstances that bring moments of joy and celebration; events that challenge and may even cause them to doubt their faith and doubt God.

I so enjoyed reading this book and grew to love and appreciate each character, even the hateful, stubborn, and gregarious ones! I readily identified with Katherine as she struggles with confidence, whether or not she is making the right choices, her ability to exemplify honor and respect when dealing with her mother's critical attitude, and her desire to make sure her own children know they are loved.

Though "Blowing on Dandelions" is a work of fiction, the author has a unique style and ability to weave honest unspoken thoughts, emotions, concerns, and second-guessing of one's self and choices amid the dialogue and gritty details of life as it is experienced by Katherine, Micah, Frances, Seth, and the other characters. In doing so, she gives readers a much deeper look into the real and vulnerable people behind the self-made facades. With this revealing also comes the truth that, we too, may have or may have had similar fears, doubts, concerns or worries, but are or were too fearful or ashamed to admit them to anyone.

Or perhaps there was no one person trustworthy enough to turn to. As Frances experienced, through the example of a most unlikely boarder, kindness can break down barriers, honesty and truth can set you free from the burden of fear and self-protection, and relationships can be restored.

Like the many seeds of the puffy dandelion, this story is filled with examples of the seeds of God's love, trust, wisdom, grace, truth, and forgiveness that, when "blown" into the lives of others in a loving way, can take root and grow, bringing new life, joy, and healing to wounded souls and hurting hearts.

Blowing on Dandelions, Book one of Love Blossoms on Oregon by Miralee Ferrell

This is the first book I have read by this author. However it will not be my last. The next book in this series is already on my to read list! This historical fiction, one of my favorite genre, captured my attention from the beginning. The author's ability to describe the settings and illustrate the characters make you feel a part of the story. I felt able to understand the difficulties of the strained mother- daughter relationship after having problems with one myself. The boardinghouse patrons definitely added spice and mystery to the book. I look forward to learning more about them in further series. I received the book from Bookfun and David Cook Publishing for my honest review.

This is the first book I have read by Miralee Ferrell. I will definitely read more of her books and finish this series.

This book caught my attention from the beginning. Do you have a childhood memory of getting away from everyone to focus on hope?

In this book we meet many different people who are so well developed you feel like you are in the story. I wish I could give advice too. And maybe tell Katherine's mother how awful she is. But this just goes to show you how involved I was in the story. This was a great book.

Blowing on Dandelions was such a great book. I am not a huge fan of historical fiction, at least I didn't think I was until I read this book. The characters are not only believable, but they experience everyday issues just as the rest of us do. I think one of the best themes behind the book, is the way Katherine (the main character), handles her very difficult mother. She manages to show what the bible says in honoring thy mother. A fantastic example of ordinary life working to live out the gospel. I would recommend this book to anyone, including my teenage daughter. It was a delightful story that captured not only my attention but my heart as well. I received this book from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
