I'm a terrible reader. I've confessed this before and I'll confess it again. I am that reader your mothers warned you about. I read the end of the story of most books long before I should. Usually, I wait until the characters have hooked me. By the third or fourth chapter of a decent book (mysteries included!), I've turned to the end to discover how it all turns out. Of course, I then go back and finish the story through. I love to know the end and watch how the author brings his or her characters through. The better written the book, the longer it takes me to turn to the back, because I am enraptured by the story itself. There are a few books that slip by me and I am at the end before I even realize it, so well-written is the story.

Karen Witemeyer's Stealing the Preacher wins such a distinction. Published by Bethany House Publishers, Stealing the Preacher is a companion to Short-Straw Bride, where we first meet the steadfast Archer brothers. In Stealing the Preacher, Crockett Archer is finally fulfilling his calling to preach to his own congregation, or at least one made up of more than just his brothers. While on the train headed for a possible job at a Texas church, Crockett is pulled from the train by a group of middle-aged bandits looking for a preacher. The leader's daughter, Joanna, has asked her father, tongue-in-cheek, for a preacher for her birthday. Joanna promised her departed mother that she would continue to sow seeds of the gospel within her father's life and feels she needs the support of a nearby man of God to help her follow through. Of course, she never intended for her father to kidnap the man!

What follows is a gentle romance that lacks for nothing in its telling. Witemeyer's skilled pen weaves a tale of a compassionate young man and a gracious young woman who fall head-over-heels in love with one another, all the while fighting off unwanted advances from the local single women, handling emergency medical situations, and dodging a snooping sheriff with a grudge.

For me, well-developed, entirely human characters whose actions in the story reflect who they are make a great story. Karen Witemeyer achieves this ideal over and over in her books and Stealing the Preacher is no exception. Both Crockett and Joanna are devoted Christians, yet they struggle with inner tumults that add conflict to the story. I love how Witemeyer treats the ideas of forgiveness, steadfastness, and love in action throughout the story and causes the already "good" characters to grow even more.

Karen Witemeyer's balance of meaningful characters and flowing action in Stealing the Preacher earn not only 5 stars, but also my Enraptured Award.

** I received Stealing the Preacher free from Bethany House Publishers (via Net Galley) in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts are my own. **

This book was a great read. If you read her last book the Short Straw Bride you will know alot about the main character in this book. Ms. Witemeyer's books just keep getting better and better.

Crockett Archer is on a train heading to his first job as a minister when he is kidnapped by a group of aging outlaws.

Joanna Robbins lives in a ranch with her father and his band of former stagecoach robbers. She asked for a preacher for her birthday and gets way more than she asked for....

This book is a great combination of fun, faith and romance.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. All views are my own...

After reading and thoroughly enjoying Karen's book Short Straw Bride, I have been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to read this book. A little while back, my daughter picked it up for me at a local book shop. I have to say, Karen did not disappoint. All the humor and lightheartedness that I loved about her first book was still in tact in this one. I don't know if all of Karen's books are like that, but I certainly know that I will be reading more of her novels in the near future.

In this one, Archer Crockett, a preacher, set out to win over his first congregation and hopefully be a full time minister of their church heads out on a train only to find himself kidnapped!

The humor in it, is that Joanna, Silas' only daughter has only one wish for her birthday - a preacher! Yet, her father's tactics in getting her one, only make her wish she had not voiced her desires. And they also draw quite a bit of inquiry from the local sheriff. Crockett on the other hand, believing God allows all things for a reason, is not eager to press charges or accuse the men responsible.

It is difficult to say much about the story without truly giving away what happens, but Karen certainly has added a few unexpected twists and turns, a sweet romance, a conniving schemer, and much humor to the story before its over. You may laugh, or cry, or maybe get plum upset by the turn of events, but you will not want to put down this delightful tale.

Karen gets five stars from me!! And I look forward to reading more of her works.

I love this author, and she didn't disappoint with this excellent historical romance. We've met Crockett Archer in other books, but his character is developed in this one. We find him to be a man of strong faith and principles which effect his actions. Joanna Robbins is a desperate young woman, desperate to see her father receive Christ as his Savior. Being the gentleman that he is, Crockett cant resist a desperate woman, and his helping involves humor, drama and, of course, romance. We see how God uses a variety of circumstances to pursue each one of us, including Silas Robbins. It's a great story which kept me reading right to the very satisfying conclusion. I think you'll enjoy it too!

I loved Stealing the Preacher! While Short-Straw Bride introduced us to the Archer brothers and was the story of the eldest brother, Travis Archer, Stealing the Preacher is the story of the second brother, Crockett Archer.

Crockett feels like God has called him into the ministry, and so he sets out to candidate for a Pastoral position in another town. Only he never arrives. Four masked men hold up the train on which he rides, and he soon finds out that they are after...him? But why? All they'll tell him is that someone named Jo wants to talk to him. Someone that he's never met. And it has him totally mystified.

Joanna Robbins made a promise to her dying mother that she would keep working to bring her father to the Lord. But it would be better if she had some spiritual help. If only the small, abandoned church not far from her home had a preacher to fill its pulpit. It would be the ideal solution...so she prays for a preacher.

Karen Witemeyer brings to life a sweet, romantic story of two people meeting in a most unexpected way.
