In Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico, Lena takes us off on a romantic, historic, and spiritual journey between several people. It is the 1890s, and Philip Smith, an elderly, sick, quite well-to-do miner instructs his young friend, Jeremiah Dennison, to put an ad in the newspaper for a bride. Philip has loved Jeremiah like his own son, and so he feels obligated to fulfill the old man's wishes, much to his dismay. Why does Philip need a young gold-digging wife to take care of him, when Jeremiah can meet all of his needs?
Madeline Mercer, of Boston, a fine, young Christian woman, finds herself in a terrible dilemma when a business partner of her recently deceased father, announces that she is penniless and must marry him. Also a friend of Maddy's dies in childbirth and insists Maddy take care of her baby, Pearl, before she passes away. Desperate to escape the horrible Horace, and have a means to support Pearl, Madeline answers Philip's ad and flees to New Mexico. Upon meeting him, she is shocked to see that he is so old, but soon grows fond of this kind, Godly man, who has offered to take care of her and the babe.
Jeremiah, is very suspicious of the lovely Madeline, but finds himself irresistably drawn to her as a moth to a flame; his best friends intended. Jeremiah also believes that even though he is not a Christian, he is a good man, and doesn't need God. Soon Maddy's past and Horace's lies and accusations catch up with her. Will she be able to stay in Golden, where her precious baby and Philip have grown to love one another so? And what exactly are the old miner's plans for her and Pearl? Does Jeremiah give in and let God take control of his life? And what horrible things does Horace do, all for the love of money? Has he gone too far for God's mercy and redemption?
This was a beautiful story of forgiveness, love, and redemption, as only Lena Nelson Dooley can tell it! I found myself, more than once, with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes...what a wonderful read with a surprise twist near the end!

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical novel by Lena Nelson Dooley. It's now one of my favorite Love Finds You titles. The story structure reminded me of Tracie Peterson's style, but this author added her own personal touch to make it uniquely hers.
The writing style was smooth and intelligently put together. It was easy to read without feeling choppy. I got a bit misty-eyed a few times as well, which is not a frequent occurrence for me. That only happens when my heart is engaged, and in this case the author did a great job of making me care. The baby in the story was a big part of that bonding process. The author used that character well in connecting various situations and thus making my eyes water.
The theme of forgiveness was strong and beautifully written. I didn't see any flaws or downsides to this novel. The spiritual thread was strong and flowed naturally, which is not often the case with historical fiction. The church setting enhanced the novel and I adored the elderly man, Phillip.
The hero, Jeremiah, was dreamy. Though he had his weaknesses, they didn't feel contrived and just made him more intriguing and heroic to me. The heroine was strong in her own way, while remaining somewhat dependent like women tended to be in those days, especially women who had limited financial resources. Sometimes when I read a historical novel I get annoyed when the women seem atypically strong for that time period. This heroine was perfectly constructed in this case. I enjoyed spending time getting to know these characters. I highly recommend this book.

Madeline is facing a lot of changes in her life: the recent death of her father, the death of a poor friend which leaves a newborn baby in Maddys care, and her fathers supposed business partner, Horace, and his claims to marriage with Madeline. Not to mention the rumors surrounding her fathers death. In an attempt to escape marriage with Horace, Maddy flees to New Mexico in answer to a bride wanted ad in the newspaper. Imagine her surprise when she arrives to learn that the man who places the ad is actually an elderly miner! In addition to all that the miners best friend cant seem to stand Madeline and treats her with utmost suspicion. With all these things added together you have a recipe for adventure. There were some things about this book that I thought could have been better. Those were mainly really small things, though, like phrasing and stuff like that. For the most part though, this is a well written, sweet romance and I would recommend it.

I tend to be a bit jaded when it comes to straight historical romance, with a bit of the attitude of surprise me if you can. I have a small list of authors that I read in this genre because I've learned they care about the history and writing a story that will capture me. This book has added Lena Nelson Dooley to that short list. It's not the first time I've read a story where a young woman is orphaned and her father's former business partner is forcing her to marry him to get the business, but everything about the plot had a new take on the old story. Take a Boston heiress and transport her to the outskirts of desolate New Mexico. Add in an old beau and younger one. Mix in an orphaned baby, and you have a recipe for a story that will pull at your heartstrings. I truly enjoyed this romance.

Lena Nelson Dooley's historical romance, Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico is ALL about love. Anyone who has studied the five different types of love--attraction (epithumia), romance (eros), affection (storge), friendship (phile), and selfless giving (agape)--will recognize examples of every facet of love in the characters Dooley created for her story. Surrounded by a vivid setting in the 1890s mining town, Madeline Mercer and Jeremiah Dennison interact with kind, lovable God-fearing friends, as well as selfish, conniving criminals, before finding one another. You'll find yourself turning pages far more swiftly than you might expect while reading a book set in this time and place. If you enjoy inspirational, historical, romantic fiction, you'll want to pick this one up.

Lena Nelson Dooley has outdone herself with this book. I count this as my favorite Love Finds You book so far! I enjoyed Madeline's story as she followed God to Golden, New Mexico where He had a plan to save her, right? Philip is convinced that he is dying and supposed to help a woman in need by marrying her before he goes. His friend Jeremiah is very skeptical and determined to keep Philip from getting fleeced by some floozy. When Madeline shows up in response to Philip's newspaper ad for a mail order bride, Jeremiah is set in his opinion, especially after Madeline shows up with an infant and two elderly servants. Philip must be loony, not hearing from God. What exactly is Madeline fleeing from anyway? I was sorry to see this book end and really enjoyed my trip to Golden, New Mexico!

Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico by Lena Nelson Dooley is a sweet entry in the ongoing series. Wealthy, but elderly miner Philip Smith has had a message from God: he is to send for a mail order bride to join him in his home in Golden, a mining town obsessed with gold. He puts an ad in the Boston Globe, despite his friend, Jeremiah's concerns. Madeline Mercer has been struggling to make ends meet since the death of her father. With the help of her family servants, she's been caring for Loraine, a poor single pregnant woman, but when her father's partner threatens Madeline if she doesn't marry him, an ad in the paper for a mail order bride seems like the perfect solution to get out of town to escape. Jeremiah takes one look at Madeline with her beauty, elegant city clothing, and an infant to care for and decides that she is trying to scam Philip out of his money. Madeline and Jeremiah both fight their feelings for each other, but Philip knows that when God has a plan, it's best not to fight it. While the book has many stereotypical characters, Dooley uses them to great effect, and the twist with the villain is an unexpected, but pleasant, surprise. It's an enjoyable romance with tons of faith.

An expert historical author, Lena has woven a beautiful story of redemption into the fabric of life in 1890 New Mexico. Its a tale of love and forgiveness without making you feel like youve been on an extreme emotional roller coaster. It starts when an old miner sends away for a young mail-order bride much to the consternation of Jeremiah, the young friend who looks after him. Jeremiah doesnt understand old Philips faith in God or that the right woman will appear. And when a woman steps off the train and stirs Jeremiahs heart, the realization that shes Philips intended just doesnt sit right with Jeremiah at all. Add to that, the woman shares Philips religious beliefs.Madeline Mercer needs to escape Boston. Without waiting for confirmation after answering an ad for a mail-order bride, she heads to New Mexico with a new baby and 2 servants in tow. But, her steadfast faith in God falters when she meets Jeremiah and his barely concealed animosity. Frustration mounts when she overhears him profess her to be nothing but a gold-digger. She didnt travel all the way to marry Jeremiah, though and just being in Golden gives her more peace than shes felt in a long time. This is a good book to curl up with and spend a satisfying afternoon on a rainy day.I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of review.

Lena Dooley is a talented author who writes with such historical accuracy. "Golden" has a great story line (a mail-order bride tale, but not stereotypical), and the characters are exceptionally well developed. Even though I am accustomed to the protagonists meeting earlier in a story (these didn't meet till about 1/3 of the way through the book, and I found myself growing impatient), she did a fine job of building appropriate tension and conflict once they did meet. I have enjoyed all the "Love Finds You" books that I've had the pleasure of reading, but Lena's is one of my favorites thus far. I look forward to more of Lena's work!

I found the book itself well-written, but the plot somewhat sagging and dragging. I also didn't like that the two main characters didn't even meet until AFTER page 100--almost to the halfway point in the story. Some of the plot was convoluted. You'd get the idea that a character was feeling a certain way, but the narrative, inner thoughts, and dialog didn't always match up. Overall, it was an okay read, but I guess it takes a lot to hold my interest. I love quality fiction, and this just didn't quite meet my expectations.

The "Love Finds You in. . ." series has given me a glimpse of places to which I may never travel, with lovely descriptions of the land and architecture and history of the towns featured.Golden, New Mexico is a desert mining town, set in 1890 after the initial gold rush. Jeremiah Dennison is a former mine owner turned rancher who looks after an elderly friend and mentor, Philip Smith. Philip's health is failing, and he seeks a caregiver to ease his last days, so he asks Jeremiah to take out an add for a mail order bride for him. But there is more to his motivation than wanting a bride for himself. When Madeline Mercer's father dies, the Mercer estate is left up in the air when one of his business associates makes a claim to his business and Madeline's hand. Meanwhile, Madeline's charitable heart leads her to help an impoverished young lady about to give birth in a freezing shanty. The girl dies but not before she makes Madeline promise to raise the child. When Mr. Mercer's colleague presses his suit and threatens the baby, Madeline must flee Boston. Enter Philip's mail-order-bride ad.When Madeline reaches Golden, will it be a golden opportunity for a fresh start, or will she have toughened ore to pick through before she finds the vein? I enjoyed Madeline's determination and pluck as she endeavors to raise a child, navigate a new town, minister to Philip, and hold her finances together, all the while deciphering her confusing feelings for Jeremiah.I loved the tender portrait of elderly friendship and faith, and the unique personality the author gave to the infant. Characterization is a well-honed skill of Lena Nelson Dooley, and her three-dimensional people really add a depth to the book.Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico is one of those romances that was so much more than a romance--it is a story of the love of a land, love that surpasses generations, and the forgiveness that makes a love relationship between God and man possible. A beautiful read.

Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico, is the emotional tale of a kind-hearted woman on the run from a cruel man determined to marry her. Maddy is a great heroinegentle, generous, and godly. Jeremiah is staunchly protective, determined, and certain that Maddy is an opportunist, out to marry his good friend so she can gain access to his wealth. I enjoyed this interesting story, especially the second half when the hero and heroine are together more. Theres fabulous chemistry between Maddy and Jeremiah, even when he thinks shes a charlatan. Lena Nelson Dooley sets the scene so well that youll feel dust on your lips and hear the continually pounding of the gold stamping machines of Golden. Dooleys book effectively illustrates the providence of God working behind the scenes to direct peoples live. For a mail-order bride story with a twist, check out Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico.

Romance, Inspiration, God's plans working out and adventure all in one book. Forgiveness in so many aspects of life also. This is a book you won't be able to lay down. One can see God working all throughout the pages. He brings Maddy Mercer and Jeremiah together in a way that only he can. How God talks to Phillip and uses him as part of his plan in unique. As a person who God brough my husband from Kansas to Illinois for me, and we've been married 30 plus years now, I loved this a lot.I know first hand how God can work to accomplish his plan.God's protection upon Maddy is another avenue I enjoyed imensely. The story of Lorraine and Pearl and eventually forgiveness of Lorraine's parents by Maddy is a true love story from God.One feels like they are back in the West during Gold discovery days and seeing God at work in a way one wouldn't think about. Sometimes others can become more family than those of your immediate family - like Phillip becoming like a Grandfather to Maddy and little Pearl.Highly recommend.

I struck it rich with this historical romance. Id not read any of Lena Nelson Dooleys books before, but because of her excellent reputation, I knew Id be in for a treat, which I was. This story is well crafted from start to finish. The mining town of Golden, New Mexico is described so well, I felt I was there hearing the stamp machine, experiencing the heat of the sun-drenched summer days, and seeing the adobe homes echoing the soft colors of the desert landscape. What brings this story to life, though, are Dooleys vibrant characters, with whom I enjoyed spending time. Strong but suspicious Jeremiah, warm and caring Maddy, and a host of secondary characters, including bighearted Philip, are likeable people. They pulled me into the story and were my fictional friends throughout. I longed to see good things come out of Maddy and Jeremiahs struggles and found his faith journey to be a highlight. I highly recommend Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico and am grateful for my review copy. Lena Nelson Dooley is now on my favorite authors list.

Ms. Dooley has crafted a delightful novel depicting the powerful ways God can lead the lives of his people if we allow him control. Philip Smith, a wise Christian man who wants to use his mining money to accomplish some good for another before he leaves this earth, places an for a bride. Trapped in an untenable situation back East, Medeline Mercer trusts God to lead her to a land of new beginnings by answering that ad. Jeremiah Dennison, dedicated friend to Philip, seeks to protect him from the woman he assumes to be a gold-digging Easterner and along the way discovers the true value of faith. The opening chapters of this book were fabulous. I was immediately drawn into the drama surrounding Madeline's travails. In Golden, Jeremiah is the kind of hero every reader of western romance loves--rugged, strong, and just onery enough to make us all want to be the one to reform him. Philip, the Sneeds, and the Oldmans all played unique and well-drawn mentoring roles for the characters. Each of them had a quiet strength based on their personal relationship with the Lord, which manifested itself in the way they served others.Madeline and Jeremiah's tale makes for a sweet romance and an enjoyable read. The end was a bit too tidy for my taste, but those who favor stories with a strong message of forgiveness and God's redemptive power will be quite pleased with this book. Overall, I am happy to recommend it.

Dooley excels in making the setting come alive. As I read Love Finds You in Golden I was immediately transported to the mining camps of New Mexico. After reading Dooleys lush, evocative descriptions I wish I could plan a vacation to this now quiet town. The characters faiths are a very real part of the novel. I really appreciated the fact that the characters live out their faith from day-to-day. I appreciated the fact that the Christian message was proclaimed so clearly throughout every chapter of this novel. The main characters in the novel demonstrate the power of forgiveness and through God how we can forgive even the seemingly unforgiveable. On the whole I enjoyed this historical romance, however there were a few issues that marred my opinion of Dooleys story. I found the villain, Mr. Johnstone not as clearly developed as some of the other characters and throughout the book I felt he came off as the stereotypical villain. Since I didnt feel I got to know Johnstone as a person, even his transformation seemed less than believable. Although I appreciated the way the characters faith was present throughout the novel, I think there were times when the way this faith was demonstrated might be difficult for a non-Christian to understand. For instance, the way Philip knows exactly which letter to open. Throughout the novel God speaks to Philip in a way that is understandable to the believer, but may appear mysterious to the unbeliever because it is not explained fully. Despite some difficulties, I still found myself wanting to pick up this book and continue to read to find out what was going to happen to the characters. I feel that Dooleys work has merit and I look forward to see what the future holds for her.
