Kregel Publications Preaching with Variety

Do you sometimes catch folks nodding off during your Sunday message? Arthurs points to the creative imagination of the Master Communicator as a solution. He recommends shaping your sermon based on one of the six styles used by the writers of Scripture itself---psalms, narrative, parables, proverbs, epistles, and apocalyptic literature. Chapters feature practical "try this" suggestions and a quick checklist for each genre.

Jeffrey D. Arthurs (Ph.D. Purdue Univ.) teaches preaching at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

Jeff Arthurs' particular genius lies in translating the conceptual into the practical. Ending each chapter with a "Try This" section of how-to instruction, Arthurs walks pastors through the elements of the various genres of biblical literature, demonstrating how a pastor can recreate the rhetorical impact of a given form of literature in his sermon. In other words, if you pay attention to the creative ways in which the Bible communicates, you can, with Arthurs' help, bring that same creativity into your own preaching. This is a truly helpful, well-organized, and practical resource for a working pastor.
