Barclay was an incredibly gifted writer. These two volumes on Matthew are among his best efforts. The work is built upon solid scholarship, but is written in a popular style. The series is designed to provide easily accessible daily devotions. The aim was "to make the results of modern scholarship available to the non-technical reader..." Because of the vision of the series, Barclay's work should not used as a stand alone resource. But it definitely accomplishes what it sets out to do.
