Multnomah Publishers, Inc. Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream

Take a transforming journey in authentic discipleship. As the pastor of a large and wealthy congregation, David Platt began to see a discrepancy between the reality of his Church and the way Jesus said His followers lived. In Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, Platt examines how American Christianity has manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences and challenges readers to rediscover the path.

I have to admit that David Platt is amazingly convicted to make a change in his own life. While he makes excellent points that draw me to reconsider my "comforts", I cannot help but be annoyed by the use of Scripture which is taken out of context. The book has entirely too many holes and I can see the potential that this book carries to make people judgmental. I am a stay-at-home mother, raising 2 (soon to be 3) children. This, indeed, is my mission field in this season of life. Mr. Platt fails to recognize that the Sovereign Lord has people serving in a million different capacities. Bottom line, I was disappointed & not impressed.

My wife bought this book for me for Christmas and I am grateful; I've watched a few David Platt sermons online and am convicted by his passion for believers to go back to the Bible as the source of their Christianity. Those in America that profess to be Christian follow a faith more rooted in patriotism, prosperity, and comfort, and this is the main point Platt is addressing. To his admission, he doesn't have all the answers and is just shining a light on a problem in our American church that need fixing. The book is only radical because most people in the Christian faith in this country don't preach a sound gospel, leave all to follow the Lord, and help others only when it suits them (I, too, have fallen into this trap and praise God I can repent from those things and move forward to serve the Lord). Before I read this book or heard of Platt, I remember reading Luke 14:26-33 about leaving it all if you truly want to be Jesus' disciple and Matthew 15:8-9 about drawing close to Jesus with our mouths but being far from Him in our hearts and being convicted to examine my walk with the Lord. This book basically does that, throwing out challenges and examples of those wanting a truer, deeper walk with God. While this book doesn't replace the Bible and may have some disputable points here and there, it is worth reading. And ask yourself, do we serve the Jesus of the scriptures or the Jesus of the American dream?

David Platt is a fantastic preacher and an amazing author. This book will challenge the way you view faith and will push you in your understanding of exactly what it means to follow Jesus. This is exactly the type of revival needed for the church today; we need to know what it is to follow Jesus and be willing to acknowledge that everything belongs to him, the earth is His footstool. Very convicting and very convincing, give it a read!

I first received David Platt’s book Radical about two years ago. It was sent to me as part of the Blogging for Books program, which is administered by the WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group. According to the Blogging for Books website, “This program was designed for one purpose: Give out free books to bloggers in exchange for an honest review.” So this post represents my review of David Platt’s Radical.
In Radical, David Platt asks a lot of tough questions that many others have been afraid to ask. Tough questions that deserve thought, discussion, and answers. Some may be uncomfortable reading this book, especially at the beginning when it seems the questions are going unanswered. But that uncomfortable feeling might just be a good thing!
Basically, Platt is suggesting — even daring — people of faith to let go of the American Dream and depend once again on a faithful and loving God. He goes on to speculate that as American believers we have fallen into a sort of trap that leads us to believe that bigger means better — bigger buildings, bigger budgets, bigger baptisms. To some, that suggestion is truly is “radical.”

All three of the copies of this book I ordered arrived on time and in perfect condition. I sent one to a friend as a Christmas gift and would recommend it to anyone who desires a deeper, biblical relationship with Jesus Christ. "Radical" will challenge you to give up the cheap pop-gospel and pursue the life Jesus outlined in the Word of God.

I loved this book. I've been on a mission before and I can relate a lot to how it feels to be overseas. Great book to get you thinking and analyzing your life. Are you really surrendering everything to God? It's a question I ask my self everyday. Read it! :)

I received the book, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith From the American Dream by David Platt, nearly two years ago. I was excited to start reading it because I believed it probably had some thoughts in it that many in our culture needed to hear. These were ideas that I felt I already had a handle on and I was ready to hear another voice reaffirm my thoughts.
But for whatever reason, most likely the wonderful leading of God, I got bogged down in the book after the first three chapters and put it down. I knew Dr. Platt comes from a different theological strand than I do and the first three chapters set up those differences. I moved on to other books and this one sat on my shelf.
In the last few months I have been a little frustrated as a pastor. It wasn't the usual things that pastors often say when they get discouraged. Things at the church were going well. The people of the church are supportive and open to leading. I was discouraged because I didn't feel we were in the place I wanted us to be as a church. I had been praying and talking with trusted friends about my feelings and searching for next steps.
Within that process I "happened" to pick up this book again and started where I had left off and Dr. Platt was saying exactly what I needed to hear!
I was frustrated not because the church wasn't where I wanted it to be. I was frustrated because I had lost sight of where I needed to be.
This book will challenge you to get outside of what our safe Christianity in the United States has trained us to pursue and to stretch out to live in the radical way Jesus has called his disciples to live. The sentence that challenged me came as Dr. Platt examined Matthew 10 and concluded:
When Jesus looked at the harassed and helpless multitudes, apparently his concern was not that the lost would not come to the Father. Instead his concern was that his followers would not go to the lost.
Dr. Platt uses the scriptures to challenge us to not ask, "What can we spare?" but instead to ask, "What will it take?" He encourages us to stop being afraid to take chances for the spread of the gospel but instead to realize that "to live is Christ and to die is gain." And he ends with a year of practical steps that lead us to the radical life Jesus has called his followers to experience.
Dr. Plat and I may land in slightly different places on some theological issues...but we are a part of the same team of Jesus followers and we share a common mission to make disciples of ALL PEOPLE whatever that requires of us.
I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review

I give credit to David Platt for the courage to write a book like Radical. Christianity in America needs a wake up call and this book is that call. For those who think the Christian faith is soft and easy, think again. This book is doctrinally sound and does not deviaate from Scripture. I would recommend that every believer in Christ who has the desire to serve the Lord faithfully and hasn't quite figured out where to begin, to read this book.

Platt does a wonderful job at speaking into our culture, that is to say, at speaking into the blind-spots that are hard for us to perceive in our own time. The big one he brings up is greed and how the American Dream doesn’t quite fit into the Biblical picture of picking up our cross and following Jesus. Like so many issues you can go drastically to one extreme and while he certainly presents some radical ideas, it’s all backed up by Scripture and the teachings of Christ. I think that many of his ideas are expressed in similar fashion in Shane Claiborne’s writings and one would do well to read both authors.
Do I agree with every end-goal conclusion he puts forth? No, but that is never the case and I certainly agree with the questions he’s asking, the idea’s he’s presenting and the sad fact that the Christian faith for far too many is a pale shadow of what it should be. As the pastor of a small church, I plan on incorporating some of his Radical Experiment ideas in the coming months (albeit – in a form contextualized for my own congregation). One minor complaint would be that I wish there were more statistics and facts backed up by research, as I think those would help to embolden some of his arguments about poverty.
I’d love to see David Platt and Dave Ramsey in a debate – while I appreciate much of what Ramsey is doing, I think Platt serves as a very good counter-balance.

The author of this book takes us on a journey where we can view our life as we live it today and compare it with the words of Jesus. It was eye opening for me and is a book that can change your life if you are willing to follow Jesus. The message comes straight from scripture especially in Mark and Isaiah. It reminds me that My job is to witness for Him and care for others.

Although the book sets some very high standards, it does in one sense open your eyes to what is happening in the Christian Church. Now when I watch a TV preacher with gilded chairs and expensive tapestries as a backdrop, I know they are not on the same page as God.
