John Piper’s Pleasures of God is destined to be a classic within Christian literature. Piper seeks to explain how a holy God can take pleasure in sinful creatures. Furthermore, he elaborates on his famous quote, “God is most glorified n us when we are most satisfied in him.” Piper begins by explaining how God first takes delight in himself. God has no need of anything outside of himself. God’s delight and pleasure in mankind is not out of a sense of duty. God does not delight in mankind because he is lacking in anything. God’s delight in mankind is out of His own good will.
One of the first encounters with heresy I had as a believer took place while I was attending a Bible College in Tn. The professor began the course by teaching that God created mankind because He was a loving God and needed something to love. In order for God to be love He needed an object to place that love on. Piper shows how this argumentation is ignorant and lacking in scriptural warrant. God is not lacking or in need of anything. There has been a perfect fulfillment and existence of love in eternity between the trinity. God delights fully in being God.
Piper goes through several chapters of explaining the things which God delights in. Piper explains how God delights first in the Son. Next, Piper explains God’s pleasure in electing sinners unto salvation. From God’s pleasure is the election of mankind into salvation, Piper explains God’s delight in new children. God delights in man through Christ. Piper concludes the book by discussing Lordship Salvation or whether you can have Christ as Savior but not as Lord.
One of my favorite quotes, Piper quotes within the book I would be completely unaware of, if it were not for this book. Piper quotes Henry Scougal from his famous book The Life of God in the Soul of Man saying, “The worth and excellency of a soul is to be measured by the object of its love.” The worth of value of the soul is determined by that which it finds its ultimate delight in. I think most often people believe the opposite. Mankind can only find their value and their purpose through delighting in the Son.
