I have recently finished reading Desiring God, a DVD Study, by John Piper. Quoting Piper, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him." So simple, yet so profound. Piper supports this premise scripturally and it is a result of many years of study. John Piper is the Pastor for Preaching and Vision at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This DVD presentation is set up as a 5 hour topical study to a small audience. While the trappings of this presentation were a bit less sophisticated (use of overhead projector as opposed to powerpoint), Piper's delivery was both personable and engaging. I found the message of this text both challenging and thrilling.

From the back of the study guide - "This study guide companion to the DVD version of Desiring God - the classic explanation of Christian hedonism by John Piper - will help individuals and groups understand that the supreme calling of life is to "glorify God by enjoing Him forever." "

I was thoroughly blessed to receive a copy of John Piper's Desiring God DVD series and study guide. It is a 10-series, 2-disc set that encompasses the main ideas found in his book, Desiring God. I have not read the book, but from the table of contents that I found online, it does not look like the DVD series follows the outline of the book. The book seems to go into greater detail than the videos.

That beings said, I found this DVD series to be highly engaging and I would go as far as to say it will radically change my walk with God. Each DVD segment is only 20-30 minutes, which is great for someone with a busy day, although I found myself always clicking onto the next section because I was so engaged by what Piper had to say and couldn't wait for the next segment!

I found the overarching message of this DVD series to be excellent. John Piper focuses on the first point of the Westminster Catechism which says that "man's chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy him forever." Furthermore, he voices his focus of this series to be that "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him". After arguing that it is indeed man's purpose to glorify God and that we require joy to achieve that, he offers practical ways of implementing that joy so that God is more glorified. I would say that it is imperative to watch the entire series. There are a few times where he will say, "Up to this point we haven't considered scripture..." or "Up to this point we haven't considered the cross..." and I think it is vital to sit back and contemplate the entire message of the series.

I also received a study guide to go along with the series. While I think the guide offers some additional thought-provoking questions, I wouldn't consider it a "Bible study". Some good stuff, though.

There are many thought-provoking questions that Piper asks and statements that he makes that stretch your mind and make you really think about what you believe. Whether or not you agree with everything John Piper says, I found this DVD series to be extremely beneficial to my own relationship with God. Piper tends to be on the intellectual side when it comes to pastors/teachers, but I think that the extra brain exercise is well worth it. Now, I can't wait to purchase the book and read more!

I was blessed to receive a complimentary copy of this series and study guide and was not required to write a positive review.

The DVD version of Desiring God by John Piper is well worth your time. Its subject deals with the theme of Christian joy. Piper teaches that we are most satisfied in life and live it joyfully when we are completely desiring God and are satisfied in Him. All of life is about the glory of God and when we live desiring Him we find joy in Him.

Piper's teaching breaks this theological concept into bite size pieces and he makes application of this principle to life.

This DVD will be great for personal study or for use with a small group. I give this resource a high rating and know that you will benefit from it. I received this resource for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

This study will give you a passion that is not seen in the Church today as it should be ! A passion for the Glory of our God and a rich satisfaction found only in Him.

Desiring God "Finding Complete Satisfaction and Joy in God" DVD focuses on John Piper's classic description of Christian hedonism, which is defined as "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him." It is John Piper's Desiring God book in seminar form. The DVD is divided into ten sessions each from 19 minutes to 30 minutes long for easy use in small groups, retreats, classrooms, and families. The topics include the foundation and essence of Christian Hedonism and them the practical application. There is also a Desiring God DVD Study Guide available.

I have not read Desiring God by John Piper, but I have heard about it and planned to read it. When this DVD became available, I decided to take a look. I still would like to read Desiring God, but I thought the DVD could benefit those who have a hard time reading nonfiction, like my husband. However, the DVD presentation was a little disappointing. It was just Pastor Piper presenting his book in a seminar setting. I really had expected more ... oh, I don't know ... "hedonism" = "pleasure" in the presentation! Maybe the lecture may not be as dry in a small group setting when only one session is watched at a time with discussion to follow. The information was thought provoking (and I wish my husband would have stuck with it and continued to watch so we could have had some good discussions). I REALLY like the last two session, How Then Shall We Fight for Joy, because they included the practical application. In conclusion, I'm unsure of how to rate it, because the material is excellent, but the presentation on the DVD is lacking, especially with the technology available now days.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through Blogging for Books, Waterbrook Multnomah Publisher's book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
