Leafwood The Graying of the Flock: A New Model for Ministry

The United States is in the midst of a dramatic transformation! Our population is aging at such a rapid rate that we recently passed a major milestone: for the first time in history our nation has more senior citizens than teenagers.

This fact could be interpreted as a sign that churches are slowly dying. But it could also be interpreted with great optimism: many churches are in the early stages of a wonderful opportunity for ministry with senior adults.

But fully utilizing that potential depends on adopting a new model of senior adult ministry. This practical, informative, and inspiring new book shows how. Surveying current gerontological literature, it shows how churches can minister with its older members, not simply to them.

Is the graying of the flock a negative or positive for the church? James Knapp does an excellent job in this 115 page book of outlining a new model of adult ministry -- a ministry with (not to) senior adults so that this great potential is used fully to God's glory. The book overviews several senior adult ministries using this new model. This overview is very practical and helpful. One of the best features of the book is the excellent overview on what aging involves for the human mind and body and how senior adult ministries should respond.
