Great Expectations Co Created for Work: Practical Insights for Young Men

The author of Boyhood and Beyond now brings us Created for Work, a collection of tales that give us examples of the work that needs to be done, whether boy or man. All the stories are taken from real life and showcase a different trait (postitive or negative!) such as confidence, plodding, and keeping your word, among many other lessons. Each chapter has study questions at the end, making it perfect for a father-son or group discussion. 181 pages, softcover.

I HOMESCHOOL our son who has just finished 6th grade. We read “CREATED FOR WORK” once a week as part of our Personal Growth area. There are 34 chapters in this book. Last year (5th grade) we started with Bob Shultz’ 1st book: “BOYHOOD AND BEYOND” (31 chapters). Because my son spends most of his day home with me, I wanted to make sure he was getting plenty of influence from a Godly man. These books hit the target! Each chapter is about 3 or 4 pages, followed by a set of stimulating questions. I read the chapters aloud to my son (and I always get something from each story as well). As I think of things in our life or my son’s possible future, I pause and discuss them. Scripture is woven throughout each chapter in the KJV (I keep my bible handy with the NKJV whenever we need an easier translation). These books have been a wonderful part of school for us! For 7th grade we will start “PRACTICAL HAPPINESS” (36 chapters). I would recommend them for ALL parents of boys; from the single mom, to the dad wanting to help mold his child into a young man after God’s own heart, to those parents working in partnership and wanting to do a family devotional with their boys, or other homeschool teachers like me! Ps: If you have daughters, it would not hurt for them to listen in and begin to understand what Godly character to look for in their future husbands, plus many of the character ideas apply to all of us, not just boys. I just found out there is a new book published this year (2011) titled “EVERYDAY BATTLES”. I will order it very soon to make sure I have it ready for 8th grade. However, in checking the CBD website, I learned of Mr. Shultz passing away in 2008 (thanks to another reviewer kind enough to share it). I am so sad and deeply moved. Mr. Shultz leaves an amazing legacy behind, both in these books and in the many lives he touched personally, (as you will come to understand through the little stories he shared). I pray that his family is continually blessed and comforted.

Great book! I homeschool and assigned this to each of my boys to read and write a report on. I could tell they "got something" out of it by the change in their work attitudes after reading the book.

This book is wonderful. We did like another reviewer and read it aloud as a devotion. Our kids are 19, 14, 11; two boys, one girl. I can only hope they got half of what their dad and I got out of it. We have decided to go back and read it aloud again. It's that good.

Our family has been greatly blessed by this book. I cannot recommend it enough!!!We use it as a read aloud devotion with our kids: 9, 11 and 14. It hasn't mattered that it was written for boys, 2 of our kids are girls. It applies well to boys or girls. In fact, it applies well to adults! We have loved reading Mr. Schultz's stories and life examples. They stick with you and help you to remember and apply specific principles from God's Word. We only have 2 "lessons" left in the book, I wish we weren't so close to the end!

This book is worth twice the price. Our grandson is about to get his first job. He was very interested in this book. The stories were life lessons that we could discuss. Wish we had a book like this when I was growing up.

This book is great for the whole family to read together. My husband has even read chapters to his men's group. It is not just for boys, although a friend said it helped her son and husband to have some connection.

This book our 13 1/2 yr old son has already started reading, though it was to be part of his 8th grade school work, he picked it up and began reading...his comments were that it was cool and he wanted to get going on it! Awesome! Our son is an only child and so he is blessed to have many things, this book we hoped would put a little perspective and show him that he will have to work to live and provide for his family, like his Dad and I do. Awesome book! 8th grade approved!!
