In his analytical study of the Fourth Gospel, Merrill C. Tenney provides a highly useful schematic analysis of the Gospel that will help readers discover in full detail the aim, theme, and developed teaching of John. Tenney's analysis of John is taken up in 3 sections. The first section examines the general structure and outline of the Gospel of John. The second, and by far the longest, section provides an exposition of the text of the Gospel, taking up the career of Jesus according to the six periods that seem to be suggested by the Gospel writer. The last section furnishes a topical analysis of the Gospel, summarizing its contents under several headings, including authorship, vocabulary, signs, symbols, and interviews. Charts and diagrams throughout the book also help readers to clearly grasp the major themes of John.

This analytical study is not comprehensive as a complete commentary could be but it is a unique and helpful approach to studying Scripture, in this case The Gospel of John. I would not use it as my only commentary, and I would especially not recommend it alone for those who are new to studying the Scriptures. In my case, it was recommended by Hal Lindsey in his new 40 CD study of the Gospel of John, and he, of course, supplements the book in his teachings on the CDs. By the way, I cannot say enough about Mr. Lindsey's excellent Gospel of John teaching. If you thought you knew all about him from 'The Hal Lindsey Report' or his books, you would be wrong. He is a first-rate teacher, knows his material, throws in some Systematic Theology and pastoral advice, reads directly from the Greek, and, above all, is obviously a compassionate and sincere man of God. This is one of the very best teachings on Scripture I have ever heard, and I have heard them all at my age. You will be blessed by it.
