Customer Reviews for Apologia Educational Ministries Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal

Apologia Educational Ministries Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal

Love the regular Apologia notebooking journals, but find the writing a bit too advanced for your student?

Apologia's Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal provides grade-appropriate activities specifically geared towards younger students who aren't as advanced in their writing abilities. Almost the same length as the regular journal, the notebooking pages are designed to suit students struggling with their handwriting and writing skills; dashed writing lines, cut-and-paste, coloring pages, and fewer writing activities make the junior notebooking journal perfect for struggling older students or easily adaptable for younger K-3 grades.

Coloring pages, scripture copywork, vocabulary flip-cards, puzzle pieces, "take it further" ideas, diagrams to label, word bank/fill-in-the-blank, and other fun lapbooking pages are included, as well as full-color minibooks. 208 non-reproducible pages plus 61-page full-color section. Spiral bound, softcover.

~*Correlates Well: The Astronomy textbook (by the same author) works hand-in-hand like a fitted glove. An interrelated schedule is included for reading (textbook), notebooking, & doing activities/projects.
~*Feasible: A can-do science! The suggested schedule is based on a 28 wk period, 2-days per week. The purpose of the schedule is to be used as a guide for individual families. It's easily adaptable for our situation, and I believe other families as well.
~*Appropriate for Ability: I love this notebook for my 8 year old. She's taken a shine to it. She looks forward to coloring & attempts to make it accurate! I look forward to see which "Fascinating Facts" she pulls out of our textbook reading & what artwork she creates.
~*Ease of Use: Great "pick-up & go quality"! We incorporate the Scripture copywork as part of our Language Arts program. The whole set-up makes it easy for my child to be fairly independent with notebooking.
~*Additional Ideas: Additional reading and projects ideas for the younger group are given.

The notebooking journal is great! While I read from the textbook my 1st & 3rd grader color the pictures that go along with the lesson. It has great activities to reinforce what is being learned from the textbook. It also has a suggested lesson plan/schedule you can follow which tells you what pages in the textbook correlate with what pages in the norebooking journal.

This journal exceeds my expectations! It's easy for parents to follow along the lessons and great for kids to learn in a hands on, fun way. My daughter enjoys the projects and learning about God's amazing creation through astronomy.
Highly recommend it!

This Junior Notebook is a great addition to our studies for my 6 year old. With lots of coloring pages and options for both block and cursive copy work, it is something we can use now and then pull back out in a few years and use again when he is a bit older.

I ordered this journal because I thought it would be easier to use rather than simple lined and blank paper. The illustrations, copywriting exercises and other projects are interesting and hold my first grader's attention. But I wish there was more space for her to write her notes, thoughts and drawings. I also thought the extra projects would have been better placed in the textbook instead of in the journal so that the journal is truly that - a journal. Another thing that would have been useful would be to include the field trip notes in each lesson rather than have it all at the end. Overall, I found the journal a useful supplement to the textbook.

This is my first year homeschooling and I chose to use Apologia's Astronomy for science because both my kindergartener and my second grader are interested in it. I LOVE apologia's approach to science and was very excited when they released this junior version of their notebooking journals. Both of my children retain what they learn better if they journal, narrate and experience hands on projects. Apologia has all of this! They love looking back through their notebooks, looking at all the mini books and re-reading the passages they worked on. They also love the space to record their projects and activities. We glue in a picture, and they write a few lines about what they learned during that activity. I love that all the pieces are within the book and ready to use, which is less work and preparation on my part. Full color printing for the mini books make them especially fun.
I have found this version very flexible. The copywork pages come in both printing and cursive so you can chose which is best for your child. There are multi-level project suggestions that you can use for teaching multiple children and grades.
Would recommend this to anyone who loves apologia science, but whose children are not yet ready for the amount of writing in the regular notebooking journals.

This is our first year using the Apologia Science series. Science is one of my son's favorite subjects, but he hates to write. We spend so much time struggling over his writing assignments that it was nice to have something he looks forward to in a different subject. This notebook really is perfect for younger students or reluctant writers. There is still some writing, but it uses pictures and other activities to reinforce the lessons so the student doesn't just get bogged down in the writing. Also it is spiral bound allowing the book to be opened up completely and laid flat. This makes writing in the notebook that much easier and no more tearing out pages (because the book is falling apart) and 3-hole punching them for binders.

My ds 6 has only been using this for two weeks, but so far he has enjoyed the activities and coloring pages. I have found that they do indeed reinforce the things he has learned. I found the first matchbook lacked the space to write his narrated comments about what he'd learned. But this was a minor issue, and I just wrote in the space beneath the alloted writing space. No biggie at all. Overrall we are very pleased!

This book is amazing. I purchased it for use by my 5-year-old this year. He now has coloring pages, along with the materials that are in the regular notebooking journal that his older brother is using. I was so thankful to have it.

The jr. notebook is a great resource for the younger kids working on this book or for kids who have a difficult time with reading and writing. The notebook isn't absolutely necessary to complete this course, it just makes life a little easier which I'm all for.

This is a wonderful addition to our curriculum. We love the Charlotte Mason style, a gentle learning atmosphere, and this is just wonderful for that. My children enjoy this. There are so many wonderful things they have you do, and this helps them to retain what they have just learned. A keepsake for sure, as each child does their own journal. It is all laid out, very easy.

Well planned for my second grade student. Makes a lot less copying for me. Easy to pick and choose projects. Allows my DS to feel like he is really participating with his older sister in the notebooking exercises. Spiral bound works easily for us.
