Sheaf House Publishers Quest for the Nail Prints

If you've ever imagined spending time with the Lord Jesus in His time, this energetic and ultimately gut-wrenching thriller may very well be just what the Great Physician ordered. Quest for the Nail Prints by Sheaf House Publishers is a new time-travel thriller by author Don Furr set in the final days of the life of Christ. Three twenty-first century travelers come face to face with the rugged, radical prophet known throughout the land as Jesus of Nazareth and find much more than they ever dreamed possible. And although there literally is a hole punched through the entire book from beginning to end, you'll find it fills some very important "holes in your quest for knowledge and understanding of our Savior's last days.

From the moment you pick this book up you know there is something different about it. For starters there is a hole completely through it. One other thing that stands out is that it is Christian fiction but from the sci-fi genre. Yes there are other Christian sci-fi books, but in general they are few and far between.
I am not personally drawn to science fiction but my book clubs were asked to read and comment on this book so I obliged. I am grateful that I complied.
The story begins with three ordinary people from different walks of life. For different reasons they are each traveling to Israel. Through a series of events that are written in a manner that make them feel plausible, they are thrust back in time to the beginning of Holy Week. Make that the original Holy Week where Christ is making his way through the streets of Jerusalem.
The story continues through Holy Week and we get an up close and personal view through the eyes of our three travelers. I was amazed at how drawn in to the story I was. Don did a great job of staying accurate to scripture while adding in these new characters. The further you get into the book the more poignant that nail hole becomes. I’ve always thought it would be interesting to have been there. What would my reaction have been like? Would I have stayed to the bitter end or would I run and hide in fear? Expect to ponder these questions and more as you read this very intriguing tale.
Quest is the first book in the series and will be followed up by Peter’s Quest. I’m looking forward to reading it just so I can find out more about the three travelers and how all of this impacted them when they returned to their families.

First of all, a book with a hole drilled through it from front cover to back does certainly catch one’s eye. That they represent the nails driven through the hands of Jesus lets one know that this book will be special.
Three ordinary people, a pastor, a believing doctor, and an agnostic professor, take a wrong turn in Jerusalem on a trip to the Holy Land and end up back in time to the last week of Jesus’ life. So many questions arise from this scenario. What would it like to be face to face and physically embraced by Jesus and hear Him call me by name? As the author expresses this thought: “How is it possible I am in the presence of the living, breathing Son of God. . . . . . . .the human embodiment of the God of the universe”? Paul and Elizabeth sit with the disciples as Jesus speaks, and yet realizing that they were in the peculiar position of having more insight into what Jesus was saying and what was happening than the disciples themselves since the time travelers knew what would happen next. They marveled at the blasé boredom on the faces of some in the crowd and the way Jesus’ words seemed to fly over the heads of even His closest friends. Then the big issue, if you know that someone you love will be betrayed and murdered, what would you do to stop it? Or should you just stay on the sidelines and watch?
The professor’s first century experience is completely different. He ignores the testimony of his own eyes even after he is the recipient of a miracle. He blindly follows his own path of greed and self-interest, resolutely disregarding any sense of morality in his actions. Why was he sent back to this place in time? Will he ever see Jesus for who He is?
So many questions are raised: what does Jesus dream? What if Jesus had chosen the 21st century to have been born—would things have been different?
The story is very readable and engaging with an intriguing premise. Like Leon, Liz and Paul, we are unsure of how they got there and why. The author expresses it this way: “Three lone threads in a tapestry without a clue as to the magnificent pattern God was weaving.” Like Liz and Paul, we are privileged to hear Jesus speak to us with all the insight available to us as Post-Resurrection People. How amazing it would be to be in their shoes!

Formal Book Review
Title: Quest for the Nail Prints
Author: Don Furr
I had mixed emotions as I began to write this review. I was excited because of how much I enjoyed the book, but concerned because it was going to be very difficult to explain just how good it is. As a Christian Historian I am accustomed to reading about the early years of the church, the era of the Apostles, and the world that surrounded it. However, it is obvious I have missed out by not reading fictional history. I was surprised by the change in environment and it was , to me, a twist worthy of Chubby Checker. I could never have imagined the excitement (and just all out fun) waiting for me when I started reading this book. I'm seldom surprised, but this marvelous, master-crafted work did so – even when I thought I knew what I was about to read. No matter how familiar one is with the Gospel account, reading this imaginative and insightful work can only help the reader see this world changing event more clearly and vividly. If only I would have had a New Testament professor with such imagination and uncanny ability to take a world so distant and make it so interesting.
From the cover of the book all the way through the last page, the author rewards the reader for taking time to read the work. It is absolutely believable with some of the best character development I have been privy to experience. Almost immediately I felt as though I knew and understood each character. I felt more like a silent observer in an adventure of a lifetime – even wanting to add my two cents worth at times. (I did indeed find myself talking to the characters a few times.) When a book can elicit that type of emotion and interaction, it is one that has to be at the top of anyone's must read, must share, must talk about list.

Quest for the Nail Prints by Don Furr is a journey of three unrelated individuals to the time of Christ for reasons they do not know. Elisabeth is a Flight MED Doctor and was heading to Israel to set up a clinic their for trama patients. She is a believer. Paul is a pastor who is going on a Honeymoon gift from his mother and sick stepfather, without his wife because she is fearful of the area and time - it has always been his dream and she wants him to live it. The third traveler is a Professor of Religious studies, who by all accounts is without any religion whatsoever. The three end up on multiple planes together find a sort of bond or rather a mutual destination. Elisabeth has three free days and decides to go sight seeing with Paul, the professors flight gets cancelled and he ends up with them - then one two three round a corner three strange events running and suddenly Paul is seeing Jesus enter the Holy City on Palm City! The story wraps around and around drawing you in and weaving you into the tapestry - one moment in the garden of the night before the crucifixion it is said a man ran out of his cloths - when really in the dark and struggle the soldiers had tore elisabeth's outer garments off her. They were part of the bible we know now, then always. Even the black man who carried the cross was important and a soldier he also seemed to be from the future playing out a part in the final days of Christ.
This book touches the heart and soul of every christian, jew, and non believer alike. I can see a non believer accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior on their knees as they finish this book, and not because of time travel, rather the importance of the events that took place 2000 years ago. How we simply let them fall to the wayside as ashes from a forgotten fire. I know that the story of Mary and Martha used to be one of the most important stories in my life. I found solace in the giving of the alabaster oil on Jesus feet before dinner instead of waiting to use it on His body at the time of His death. I had fallen away forgotten the moment the breath the meaning the feelings around the table the way Jesus had to teach His Disciples the grand gift that He had just been given. This book takes the moments and breaths life into them and lays them out for the reader to not only read but to feel and taste, to experience. Where were you when Christ was Crucified? I was weeping.
This book may be the book that changes the lives of this current generation. It is not a hoax, not a bunch of smoke and mirrors. Rather it is Life, History-Our History, our freedom from Sin, our Bridge to the Father, the new covenant told in a way that just may make you ask another question as to His return.

I could not put this book down. The author did a wonderful job of making me feel like I had actually gone back in time and spent time with Jesus and His disciples. This book touched me on a very personal level and I highly recommend it to everyone. I have chosen it for my book club and I'm looking forward to a lively discussion. I loved the ending of the book and I can't wait for Don Furr's next book to pick up where Quest for the Nail Prints ended.

This book caught my attention and had me staying up reading til the wee hours of the morning. I finished the book in one sitting, but it was intense!
The characters are very believable. Their personalities are fleshed out and each one is very different. Spending time with Jesus personally effects them in ways they never imagined.
The author did a great job of bringing the reader into the story. Many of the things the characters said and did were very relatable. The story was very personal, in an indescribable way. The story of Jesus, and "being there" was absolutely amazing and heartwrenching.
Even though this book is fiction, it is very thought provoking and makes you think about your roles in life, how your actions can effect others.

“Quest for the Nail Prints” is a time travel novel with a supernatural intervention in the lives of the three protagonists, Elizabeth Stewart, a resident physician, and Pastor Paul Ryann, both from Memphis, and Professor Leonardo Van Eaton from George Town University.
Unrelated Circumstances bring the three together on an International air flight going to Jerusalem. The professor found himself stranded in Jerusalem when his connecting flight for India was canceled. The physician’s assignment was not scheduled to begin for three days. Paul Ryann, the minister, was fulfilling a lifetime dream of visiting the Holy land.
The three joined signed up for a local bus tour for a day of sight seeing in the city of Jerusalem. At the first scenic stop the bus made, Ryann witnessed a criminal act. Soon the trio found themselves in life threatening danger. Suddenly they discovered they were in the midst of a mysterious experience taking them back in time to a Jerusalem at the beginning of Passion Week. They became players with the twelve apostles in the upper room, participating in the last supper with Jesus.
The story that follows takes Dr. Stewart and Pastor Ryann on a spiritual journey with Jesus for the entire Passion Week right up to Calvary. Professor Van Eaton ventures out on an adventure that leads him in another direction.
Reading “Quest for the Nail Prints” became a memorable experience for me. The teachings of Jesus took on a new meaning as the Holy Spirit used Don Furr to bring his Words to the page in a new way as I was transported back in time to follow Jesus and the disciples on the final days leading to Golgotha and the Crucifixion. I found that although I was transfixed by the story line, and Furr’s writing I had to take time outs for assimilation and reflection on the purpose behind the message of cross. This is a book that will long linger in my thoughts in a way that will have an impact on my reading of the scriptures in the days, weeks, months, and years to come.
“Quest for the Nail Prints” is an unusual time travel novel with a focus on melding plot, character development, theme, and suspense. Don Furr has a remarkable gift for story telling and riveting writing that leads to a supernatural encounter with Jesus.

This is Sheaf House Publishers' second time-travel book. Its first, Seasons in the Mist by Deb Kinnard, is up for an award, and deservedly so, especially if you've a love of Cornwall, England.
But Furr's time-travel book, Quest for the Nail Prints, takes three modern-day people back to Jerusalem 2,000 years ago, to the first Holy Week, which in just coming from the Lenten season, felt appropriate to be reading.
As many of us know, book covers can make or break a book's sales. When I purchased Quest for the Nails, I thought the cover aptly fit the book's premise of going back to the Holy Land. The hole drilled through the book, though, threw me. I thought it a gimmick and, as I read along, became somewhat annoyed by it. Seemed like a lot of wasted space on every page. But as I sank deeper into the plot, the hole seemed to disappear, only to come around again at the book's end, having become significant. Now I understand, value and respect that hole.
Furr takes risks in Quest for the Nail Prints, something which with readers may wrestle as each turn of the page is revealed. I'm good with that; a good discussion about a book only adds to its impact.
I love that Furr answered some questions for me, in particular, about the man carrying a jar. These three modern-day travelers involuntarily journey to 33 A.D.; they not only encounter Jesus but live and breathe with those whom Jesus traveled and lived during the last week of his pre-resurrection life.
The characters in this book are human. The modern-day Christians in Quest for the Nails don't always live the Golden Rule. They judge, they ignore, they hesitate, they fail. At times, they embarrassingly do so while Jesus is looking on. They are full-heartedly human. This made for realistic, relatable reading.
Though Quest for the Nail Prints is clearly a work of fiction, it is an interesting exploration of time-traveling to 33 A.D. and seeing both how the disciples act, as well as Furr's ficitonal characters live, in the "what abouts, ifs and buts" of living in a historical time that has simultaneously already been written about in Scripture. One cannot read this book without feeling near to Jesus. Furr puts us in the main characters' heads and even at times, in Jesus's head.
I don't know about you, but at times when reading Scripture, I've wondered why Jesus's disciples didn't say what I think I would have said or acted more courageously. Furr explores that in Quest for the Nail Prints and makes us walk a mile alongside someone else's shoes. It's one thing to read the history of Jesus and the disciples in Scripture; it's another to live Scripture after it has already happened. The book puts a spin on WWJD and makes the reader think, "What Would I Do?" if faced with the opportunity to live during Holy Week with Jesus; to speak or act, given the same scenario. I became more emphatetic toward for the disciples; they didn't have the hindsight that I or the time travelers do.
This is a fine read at any time of year and is one that makes you think.

Never have I read a story that reached inside and squeezed my very soul. Through this book the reader travels back in time with the three main characters. They travel back to a time when Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem to fulfill the role his heavenly father set before him. One thing that touched me so much was the human side to Jesus. We know him as God’s son, and therefore rarely think of him as having the same quirks and emotions that we as humans have. The fact that the author has him roll his eyes, or look disdainfully at someone at their remark, made him seem so much closer. I cried through so much of this book. The emotion it brings from deep within your soul makes our walk with Christ that much more important. Through the eyes of Paul, Elizabeth and the Professor we see within ourselves our own shortcomings. We see through their eyes, God’s love for them and for us. This is a book you will want to read over and over again. It is also a book you will want to recommend to everyone around you. I don’t think five stars is enough to tell you how much I have enjoyed and feel blessed to have read this book. May God continue to use this book to his glory.
