Educators Publishing Service Beyond the Code, Book 2

Beyond The Code gives beginning readers experience reading original stories as well as thinking about what they have read. There are 7 illustrated stories in Book 2: Plum; The Camp Out; Greg Can't Sleep; Max; Good, Bad, or Best?; Stand up for Lemonade; and Lost in the City. Each story is preceded by introductory exercises on word families and vocabulary, and has follow-up questions that develop both comprehension and thinking skills. A final exercise in each section gives students the opportunity to complete an unfinished illustration with their own drawing. Beyond The Code can also be used independently to supplement any beginning reading program

I love explode the code, and I needed something to help my daughter with reading comprehension. This meets that nees. the only thing i did find was the lesson and story were a little long and I cant really break it up because I dont think she would remember what she read the next day.

I have an older 2nd grader, who will be 8 the whole school year. Reading has been a drag for her until we started the Explode the Code series this year and also supplemented with Beyond the Code. The Beyond the Code series has been an excellent supplement to her Explode the Code books. We started with Beyond the Code 1 at the beginning of the school year and she's already half way through Beyond the Code 2 in Dec., and actually enjoys reading and writing now! Bk 2 has longer stories than Bk 1, but the set up is the same with a preview of new words, practice spelling, rhyming, & reviewing old words before reading the really funny stories. The plan is to finish all 4 books as she finishes them, despite the grade she's in. They're pretty quick books. I wish they were a little bigger, so they'd last longer, but my daughter feels awesome every time she completes a book & looks forward to starting a new one. Kuddos to the Explode the Code Team for a job well done! This series is highly recommended either as a supplement to the Explode the Code bks or just for fun on the side.

Combined with the Explode the Code series, I have found it an excellent well thought out series for learning to read.

This series of books has really helped my daughter with reading comprehension. The Explode the Code series has worked well for phonetics and her ability to sound out words, but she would read a sentence and then not be sure of what she just read. BTC has helped her hone that skill and I have already seen progress. I would recommend this to anyone whose child seems to have "plateaued" in their reading abilities.
