Melody Carlson deals with real life issues in her stories, so I get immersed in the lives of these characters. I cry, cheer and put my two cents worth in as I imagine myself in the story.
Love that everything is not always the pat endings we see in so many story lines. She is a wonderful author!

I love this book. I read it at the library and then had to buy it. Like your favorite Christmas movie, this is a book you could take out every Christmas to read over and over and I don't think you would get tired of it.

Purchased this as a gift for grandma but thought I'd read it first because it looked heartwarming and a good read by the Christmas tree. However I was disappointed and will not be gifting it. Authors can be very influential and should be wary of writing about things for which they have no solutions or wisdom to offer.
story 1: fluffy, sweet, lacking spiritual substance; too many themes to develop thoroughly...but not bad
story 2: often wordy; heavy subject matter with no significant story development after the story climax drops on you. Yes, these are real life unfortunate happenings that we do come across and often have to deal with and take to Jesus, but no one looking for a heat-warming story at Christmas wants to deal with such disgusting things and then have the author leave the reader with no hope or healing from Christ. We have the news and secular media for that. People with these real troubles need hope and help and salvation. People without these problems need godly solutions presented to enable them grow in compassion and wisdom. What saddened my heart most was the token mention of God and the Bible...the author had a perfect opprtunity to present the gospel and show the changing, healing power of salvation and missed it. I felt cheated by the weakness of the ending. We all have failures and sin. That's why we need Christ. One of the devil's biggest tricks is to try to make people not feel so bad about their sin, to reason it away, to put off salvation for tomorrow. We do not need to be pacified by story-characters that excuse sin and put off salvation. A story should inspire us to reach higher and dig deeper, to long for Christ and develop a sturdy inner character that honors the Lord and in turn inspires others.
Story 3: my time is valuable...will choose something more meaninful for my time and the example I set to the many youth in my circle of influence.

I read The Christmas Bus and plan to read more as the holidays get closer. It was a heartwarming, tender story of compassion and love. Melody Carlson never disappoints. The books are large, colorful and full of holiday joy. Perfect for the readers on your list.

All stories were very dry. It was very hard to get through them. Dull.
