Kregel Ministry Devote Yourself to the Public Reading of Scripture

Veteran homiletics expert Jeffrey Arthurs explores a neglected aspect of church services in Devote Yourself to the Public Reading of Scripture.

Arthurs' objective is to increase the quantity, quality, and no doubt the attention paid to the public reading of Scripture in church worship services. Taking Eugene Peterson's metaphors in Eat this Book as his que, Arthurs points out the various ways public reading can be incorporated into church services. Arthurs also explains how the public reading can be done well and compellingly. This book includes a DVD in which Arthurs demonstrates such techniques as posture, diction, and movement.

Who knew so much could be, and has been, written simply about reading the Bible during public worship gatherings? I've seen two booklet-type publications on this topic, but never a full book. At first, I thought I might be either put off or bored by the academic look and sound of the book. But then I dove right in and figured I'd see what was really inside.
It turns out that Arthurs has set quite a table (pardon the pun, but this is the analogy which the author uses throughout the book to lead us through the process of thinking about and practicing the public reading of Scripture). Arthurs whets one's appetite, sets the table, extends the invitation, serves the meal and even adds a bit of spice through each chapter. The book is littered with quotes (and I mean this in the best of senses; I love a good quote and only wish there were an index provided); each one helping to understand the historic importance of reading the Bible out loud in public gatherings.
The included DVD was even more helpful. From a practical point of view, this was the dessert after the meal of the book. The author demonstrates, by way of example, how to implement what he's taught in the content of the book.
I found this to be very helpful and can see myself using this to develop my reading team, taking them to new heights, as it were. Thank you, Dr. Arthurs; a great service to the Body of Christ.

Dr. Jeffrey Arthurs is a man, passionate about the Word of God. That passion pours out into the teaching of the Word, the preaching of the Word, and most specifically, the public reading of the Word. In Devote Yourself to the Public Reading of Scripture, (1 Timothy 4:13), Dr. Arthurs explains why this is commanded, needed & even lacking in the local church.
This text is highly theological yet highly practical, which makes it a home-run! I found myself digesting each principle but the content was digesting me at the same time. Dr. Arthurs understands that the Word of God is alive, powerful & profitable for salvation. He implies that the Word is sufficient and does not need legs to stand on.
This reader read through this book in one sitting and discovered the instructional DVD beneficial as well. On the DVD, Dr. Arthurs shows techniques and examples that he included in each chapter of the book.
There is a great need for the public reading of Scripture w/out commentary or added thoughts. The Bible is completely sufficient for the soul, on its’ own.
I found this book to be incredibly helpful and an excellent resource for all pastors, elders, deacons, and even parents, because the Word needs to be audibly shared at home daily. This resource is fantastic & this reader considers it highly recommendable.
Thank you, Kregel Academic, so very much for providing this resource for the purpose of unbiased review.
