This book started out as a doctoral dissertation, and for the most part, reads like one. The initial position of the author in this research was that the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit was essentially the same between the Old and New Testaments. However, as he began his quantitative study of the texts, he discovered that there is significant difference in the activity of the Spirit from the Old to the New in relationship with believers. His research served to validate Ryrie's succinct treatment of the issue in his work, The Holy Spirit.Having read others in this doctrinal series, I was a bit disappointed in the scope of this work which is set to accompany the New American Commentary. It has limited value, and lacks the impact of the other volumes it accompanies in the series.
