This is a very different book than any I remember reading. There are two different stories in two different centuries, both involving a women named "Jane" and a ring that joins the two of them.
There is the modern day Jane, who runs an antique store, and whose marriage is in a difficult place. Her husband needs some "time off", leaving Jane in a desperate and lonely place. Then in the course of her business dealings she comes across a 15th Century ring with her name engraved in it.
Then we are taken to the court of King Henry VIII and meet Lady Jane Grey, a young girl whose life is being volleyed about by her parents and other interested parties. In the course of her story she is given an unusual ring with her a message, and her first name engraved inside it. It comes from the young man she loves and hopes to marry. But the nobles have other plans for Jane.
The writer takes you back and forth into the lives of the two Janes. She skilfully weaves the two stories into one truly wonderful book. She really takes you into the hearts, fears and joys of these two different women. It is a book for a mature reader - even a man will find this interesting, to which my husband can testify. I do not feel it is appropriate for younger readers, as some of the situations are very adult.
This is not what I would call a traditional Christian Fiction book. There are many opportunities for prayer, godly advice & teaching to have been incorporated, but were not. However, it is a beautiful story that I enjoyed thoroughly, and was written in very good taste. Every time I put it down, I couldn't wait to come back to it.
I truly loved it!

In early December, I went in search of a new author & had such a hard time deciding which one book I was going to buy. “Lady in Waiting” won for several reasons. First, the story of two Janes connected by history & a ring piqued my curiosity. Second, Siri Mitchell, one of my all time favorite authors, sung this story’s praise. Third, I found many of Susan’s book titles fascinating. I decided to start with this one, and it was the perfect choice. Susan is an exceptional storyteller whose poetic prose has the power to touch something deep inside the reader’s soul. I loved Jane Lindsay’s journey of self-discovery, her love of antiques & her unique attitude about waiting. I understand that this story of Lady Jane is largely fiction, but I adored Susan’s “what if” rendition of Jane’s life. Lucy Day may not have been a “lady” by definition, but she far outclassed Lady Frances Grey, Jane’s heartless mother, by wrapping Lady Jane in beauty through amazingly crafted gowns & the kind of friendship that shares both joy & sorrow. What Jane Lindsay lacked in decision making early on she more than makes up for in her brave, merciful choice to try again. What a delight to find Susan & to know that she has many other books just waiting to be enjoyed!

The story focuses on two main characters: Jane Lindsay, who is an antiques shop owner and is recently separated from her husband; and Lady Jane Grey, a young woman whose marriage and fate is determined by those around her. Susan weaves both their stories together, as an old ring brings them together and for a purpose. Susan’s writing allows the reader to become immersed in each of their own stories and allows these central characters ample opportunity to share their journey with us, while also bringing closure to the mystery of the ruby ring.
Through their journey, both Jane’s come to realize that they still have a voice and are in charge of their own destiny. Throughout the story, both Jane’s gain inner strength and a deeper faith. While Lady Jane Grey is ultimately executed, as history reports, Susan brings to life this woman who in the end did not compromise her values. Jane Lindsay, through a series of events and discussions with her therapist, family, and friends, realizes that she is ultimately in charge of her own happiness and also can decide the fate of her marriage. While I will not give away her ending, I will note that Susan doesn’t tie everything in a sweet little bow for readers. This allows the reader to imagine what her decision is and the course of her own happiness.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction, Christian fiction, and enjoys reading about self-empowerment for women and their relationships.

This book is ‘two-stories-in-one’ and is told from the perspective of two main characters, one living in modern day and one living in the 16th century.
The modern day character, Jane Lindsay, is an antique dealer who has just had her world rocked by her husband of over 20 years saying that he needs a break. While reeling from this news, she discovers a very old ring in a box of antiques from England. She is drawn to the ring because the inscription on it contains the name “Jane.”
In 16th Century England, Lucy Day tells of her experiences as a seamstress to young Lady Jane Gray. Lady Jane is in the line of succession to the throne, and is also waiting to see who her parents decide she should wed. She has given her heart to one young man, and he in turn gave her a ring with a Latin inscription and her name, “Jane.”
Thus the two stories are connected by the ring. Throughout the book, you find other ways that these two “Janes” are connected, particularly in regard to choices they have made or that have seemingly been made for them.
While the story of the ring and the modern-day Jane is fictional, the story of Lady Jane Gray is based on actual events in history. This alone made the book an interesting read for me. I was glad to have the “English order of characters” given in the front of this book, which made it easier for me to keep all of the royalty straight! The book was slow at parts, but, on the other hand, I would have liked to continue the story of modern-day Jane a little more to find out what happened with her.
Overall, this book was a nice read. Not enthralling, but still interesting.

A REVIEW OF LADY IN WAITING, by Susan Meissner
January 28th, 2011
Today I’m reviewing LADY IN WAITING, A NOVEL, by Susan Meissner. This is a story within a story. Jane Lindsay is a woman whose marriage of many years seems to be ending. Her doctor-husband has left New York for New Hampshire, saying they “need some space,” now that their son is in college, to decide if they even want to be married any more. This comes as a complete surprise to her, but it forces her to reexamine their life together. About the same time, a box full of discarded things found in a Britain by her English antiques-dealing associate, she obtains an old prayer book, and in that, she finds a mysterious antique ring found hidden in its binding.
Meanwhile, the story of Lucy Day unfolds. In the sixteenth century, she is the seamstress of Lady Jane Grey, a young girl of noble birth and great scholarship. From the cradle, she has been the pawn of her powerful parents, who scheme to place their daughter into the most advantageous position in the Tudor court where young King Edward the Sixth’s health is fragile and the crown hangs in the balance. Lucy becomes more than a seamstress the lonely young Jane Grey; she is eventually her companion and closest friend, rejoicing with Jane as it seems she will marry happily, then grieving with her as that betrothal is cancelled, because her parents think to make their daughter not just a nobleman’s wife, but the Queen.
Back in modern times, Jane Lindsay works to discover the identity of the owner of the ring, and as she comes closer to the truth, she comes closer to the truth about herself and her marriage.
I knew Jane Grey’s fate already, but nevertheless, Meissner’s story had me racing over the pages to see what Jane Lindsay’s fate would be. It’s a completely absorbing story-within-a-story, a framework that is not easy to pull off, but Meissner does it flawlessly. This is the first book by this talented author that I’ve read, but it won’t be the last. Brava!

In _Lady_in_Waiting_, Meissner crafts a tale that weaves between the lives of two ladies named Jane, from two different centuries and two vastly different sets of life circumstances. Although their stories are different, they are connected by a ring, which has an interesting, albeit fictional, history.
The story is well-written and captivating. As with most historical fiction, it combines some elements of history with a plot that is of the author's imagining. Meissner does this well, making the reader want to know more about the history behind the sixteenth-century story, as well as wanting to know what happens in the current-day Jane's life. The only "disappointing" part of the book was that it ended, leaving the reader wishing for more about modern-day Jane's future life.

Lady in Waiting is the perfect marriage between an historical novel and a modern day romance, but in this instance romance isn’t the focal point of the story. Instead Meissner focuses on the Faith, strength, and courage of the two leading ladies and in so doing creates an exceptional read. In fact, I read this book — all 332 pages of it — in one day. Well, technically not, since I stayed up until 3 a.m. to finish it. I kept thinking I should put the book down and go to sleep, but first I had to read one more page ….

The only complaint I have is that I wanted more of both stories!! I wasn’t too sure about the connection between the two tales, other than the ring, of course. However, Mrs. Meissner crafted two wonderful stories where one was truly needed by a character in the other, as you will see when you read Lady in Waiting. Mrs. Meissner brought to life two totally different times with completely different characters even though there were two accounts of “Jane” sharing the space of a single novel. Because she did that so well, I am looking forward to reading another book of hers, in which she uses a full novel to tell just one story. As you can tell, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read!
I loved following Lucy in the sixteenth-century and craved a friend like her. Also, my heart went out to the Jane in that story. However, I felt like I could connect more to the Jane in modern Manhattan. My favorite quote from the book is said concerning Jane’s marriage by her mom, “You don’t give up on someone just because that person is unhappy. And you don’t let them give up on you.”

I enjoyed reading about these two different but similar Janes. Some times when there is two stories in one it gets confusing but Susan did a good job with this book. She keep my interest. I only wished that the present day Jane could have found out for a fact that the ring was actually Jane Grey's. But I see how she knew it in her heart. I find it captivating that sometimes the decisions we make come into question later in our lives for all women in whatever time period we're from. And sometimes we make those decisions without consulting God. And other times, as we seen here, is the decision was not Jane Grey's at all. There are never do overs but there can always been start overs. Great Read!

There was an equal amount of intrigue and drama in both the modern story and the one set in the 1500s. Since I enjoy reading about marriage as well as reading about Tudor England, I was particularly drawn to this book. I found the parallels compelling in that both the historical Jane and the contemporary Jane felt like so many of the decisions that were made in their lives were outside of their control.
Meissner skillfully incorporated varying circumstances that allowed each of these women to see that they did indeed have choices and that those choices would determine how they lived their lives. I loved watching their empowerment grow, and experiencing what each Jane gained by that personal revelation. And while the circumstances in their lives didn't necessarily change, the beauty of the peace that they'd found in owning their choices outshone their difficulties.
The message about love being a choice was probably the most moving of all of themes found in this book. It's so true that we can't love a person, truly love them, and manipulate them at the same time. That is a one way street and a selfish way to love someone. In fact, it's not motivated by love at all but more likely motivated by fear or anxiety, or the need to feel in control. At any rate, I found the story enjoyable on many levels and was particularly fond of the message of choosing to love. Love, like forgiveness, is a choice.

“Lady In Waiting” is two stories in one. The first story is of Jane Lindsay. The owner of an antiques store whose life is turned upside when her husband of twenty-two years, unexpectedly announces that he needs some space and subsequently packs his belongings and leaves. Jane is floored. Her husband had suggested that she knew that there were problems in their marriage, so this really shouldn’t be a surprise. But the problem is that Jane didn’t know anything. Up to that point, she really believed her marriage was fine.
The second story is about sixteenth-century Lady Jane Grey, as told through the eyes of Lucy Day her dressmaker and confidant. We are introduced to Lady Jane as a young girl of nobility whose story of sorrow, irrevocable choices and faith are journaled as she quickly rises to Queen of England. Even if it was only for nine days.
“Lady In Waiting” is about choices. The choices we make, the one’s we don’t and the choices we choose to ignore. Both Jane’s struggle to find a happy medium between the choices they want and the choices that have already been made for them. For one of them, finding that balance may have come too late.
And in the middle of both women’s stories...the ring. An ancient relic purchased at a British sale for Jane Lindsay’s antique store, with a Latin inscription and the name Jane engraved into the band.
The story is definitely an enjoyable read, although in some parts, the storyline moved along slowly. However, there was also a suspense element that kept me turning the page and wanting to read more. The story is very well told and moves seamlessly across the centuries. The book will definitely challenge you to rethink some choices you have made. And it will also cause you to think twice about that new antique you just purchased as well. Does it have a story to tell?
You bet.

Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner by follows the stories of two woman separated by hundreds of years but connected by a name, a similarity in what seems like helplessness in their circumstances, and a ring.
Normally, I don't care for stories that follow two plots at the same time, and you flash back and forth. It can feel like I am barely starting to connect when I'm jolted to the parallel story that doesn't interest me as much.
Susan Meissner does a good job building both plots to stand on their own and yet connect in a way that allowed me to see a bigger picture in the theme.
I liked the new twist, it wasn't just someone reading an ancestor's journal.
There is a realistic element--not everyone's story ends perfectly, but there is enough tender hope to make it a pleasant and satisfying read.
I received this book for free, so I am not required to give a favorable review. But I would wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of Woman's fiction and historical fiction.

Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner is a fascinating read. Lady Jane Grey of 16th-century England and Jane Lindsay of 21st-century Manhattan have more in common than their name and an old ring. As the former struggles with a fate and a marriage decided by others, the latter struggles with a walk-out husband and a life she didn't plan for herself. Do the men in their lives really control their destinies? What will Jane Lindsay discover about herself in her quest to discover more about the antique ring she's found?
Meissner does it again: she's written yet another book that I couldn't put down once I picked it up! She seamlessly weaves together gripping, real-life stories of women centuries apart with real-life applications for her readers. I found out, as did both Janes, that I have more control over my destiny than I sometimes feel. We all make our own choices, no matter what influences are over and around us.

Layers of meaning captivate me. I think it has to do with my love of words. Double entendres, puns—anything with two or more layers always makes me smile. In my own writing, I take delight in creating titles or subtitles that hold two meanings whether or not readers notice them
My love for doubles is one of the many reasons I fell in love with Susan Meissner’s latest offering, LADY IN WAITING. This gentle but powerful work shares the story of two ladies in waiting tied together by a mysterious ring. Present-day Jane Lindsay, people-pleasing manager of an antiques store, finds the ring in a box of scrambled items from a British jumble sale. Captivated, she begins her quest for its original owner. In the process, she confronts both her troubled marriage and the choices she alone must make.
Lady Jane Grey of 16th-century England also has choices to make and a destiny to fulfill. In love with one man but pledged to another, her life seems as subject to the whims and wishes of others as Jane Lindsay considers hers to be. Meissner sets the modern-day story alongside the story of Lady Jane Grey as seen through the sympathetic eyes of her dressmaker, Lucy. As the two stories unfold, they have much to say about choice, desire, and truth that sets free.
Meissner’s skill as a writer is evident as she weaves the two stories together with a firm but gentle hand. Each carries its own unique voice and leaves readers contemplating their own choices and relationships—and wanting more from Meissner. And that makes this reader a lady in waiting, too.

This was my first time to read one of Meissner's books. I generally enjoy historical fiction. This book has parallel storylines. It follows two characters, both named Jane, linked together by a special piece of jewelry. One Jane lives in modern day Manhattan and the other Jane lives in 16th century England. Transitions between the story lines are seamless and the reader is eager to find out what is happening with each Jane. Sixteenth century Jane's story is told through the eyes of a personal servant. Modern Jane tells her own story of self discovery.
The story was very well thought out and entertaining. There was one spot near the beginning of sixteenth century Jane's story that the narrative dragged a bit. After that point, I didn't notice any more problems with the narrative. I found it flowed nicely. The inderlying theme of self discovery was intriging and would appeal to a wide variety of audiences. This book compelled me read up a bit on a little known Tutor monarch. I would reccommend this book to anyone. It was a light, relaxing read that allowed me to take some time to escape into the worlds of the two Janes.

What an engrossing story. Susan has two story lines going that interconnect with each other in this book. I was surprised at the concept and yet it surely piqued my thoughts!
The first story is about Jane, a modern day woman whose son left for collage and her husband has decided that he needs "space". She runs an antique store with her aunt and a myriad of interesting characters. The second story goes back to 1500's with Lady Jane an 11 year old royalty who is in the midst of turmoil in her life, who could possibly be queen on day - it is written in first person from the perspective of Lucy Day, her seamstress.
I found it very interesting that it's written in first person. I got a bit confused at first when it transitioned from one to another because of the first person, but than it felt better as I got more into the story (when you're engrossed in a book switching from two main characters feels a bit weird don't you think?)
Susan didn't romanticize the 1500's; it actually was quite tragic and for that reason, I wouldn't say my favorite kind romance novel - far to tragic, but I did enjoy it. Susan masterfully wove two stories together to create a intriguing tale. I wouldn't particularly call it Christian-- It had a lot of religious wordage that fit for the era, but there is not discussion of Christ or actual Christian statements in the book. As far as the modern theme it discussed divorce, but did not promote it. You could easily pass this around to non-Christian friends and feel okay about it.
That being said, I had a hard time putting it down - it had my attention and the mystery behind the ring and the story was enticing. A fine read for anyone who likes a mix of modern with history!

I didn’t want to put this book down. Watching as the lives of 2 ladies unfold and seeing how their lives were intertwined, although they lived decades apart, was enthralling. The mix of truth and fiction was perfect. I loved just imagining that this story could be true. The relationship between Lady Jane Grey and Lucy Day was exciting and intriguing. Reading this book, I felt like I was watching them mature and grow up. The life of Jane Lindsay was like that of so many others in our current world. You see families struggling with divorce and the possibility of divorce entirely too often. Reading how they realized that they had the ability to control their lives, and they could make decisions and also had to live with the consequences was like watching them take control of their lives. I would recommend this book to anyone male/female, middle school age and up.

Susan Meissner is a talented writer of historical romances, or should i say History and Romance? She has a way of writing that puts the reader into the characters place in time, even if you had not thought that was some time you would like to read about.
In today's society, it seems the popular thing, the "in" thing, if you will is to blame someone else for the situation you find yourself in...whether it is your enviroment, your financial or social status, your parents, and so on. Lady in Waiting explores the choices of a young woman in the sixteenth century, as well as the choices of a modern day wife, mother and daughter.
This is not the first book i have read by Susan Meissner, and like Orphans & Widows, Window to the World and Sticks & Stones, this books captivates the reader in short order, and keeps you reading. Even if you, like me, don't usually like to read books written in the first person, don't let that keep you from trying a book by Susan. Lady in Waiting captures the 'what if' life of sixteenth century Jane Grey and through skillful writing compares it to modern-day Jane's life. Although the circumstances of the two Janes were vastly different, Susan expertly entwines the two stories through a ring. What i appreciated and obtained from this book was that even allowing others to choose for us, is in effect our choice, and love is a choice you make every day.
I would recommend this book as a great read.
i recieved this book free from Multnomah Publishers in exchange and for the express purpose of writing an honest review. There was no obligation to give a possitive review.

I found Lady in Waiting, by Susan Meissner, hard to put down! This novel tells the stories of two “Janes,” a modern day Jane who runs an antique shop and has just come across a fifteenth century ring and Lady Jane Gray, the “queen for six days.”
The modern Jane struggles to deal with a husband who has just left her, an interfering mother, and the all-consuming mystery of the origins of the ring.
Fifteenth century Jane tries to find happiness in a life in which she is but a pawn in the hands of power-hungry parents and others.
This book pulled me in from the very beginning. I found the characters likable and realistic and enjoyed the “what if…” that the author developed into a story. I also learned a bit more about British history. I will be looking for more books by this author!
I received a free review copy of this book from WaterBrook Multomah Publishing Group. All opinions are my own.

Lady in Waiting is a great story.
Jane has a troubled marriage. She does not know what she will do, so she throws herself into her store. She finds a ring, with a mysterous background, hince the story inside the story.
I have read books that have a story inside the main story, but none as well written this one.
Jane is on a search for an answer about the ring. Who did it belong to, what happened to them, and why is this ring not in a musuem?
I enjoyed reading the book. I think you will too!
