Too Rich For A Bride is the second book in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series. You don’t need to read the first to enjoy this one. They flow well together but can be read independently.
This book is about Ida and her quest to stay single and build her career. The book is set in the late 1800’s so did feel sometimes that the story was a little ahead of itself in the character’s independence.
Ida comes to town and begins working for a local businesswoman, Mollie O’Bryan. She gains respect in a man’s world while also earning her own money. While she may not be looking for love, it is looking for her. With two suitors seeking her attention and some unexpected adventure she has a very busy life.
Will she choose the lawyer or the preachers? Will she keep her money or lose it? Read the book and find out!

Too Rich for a Bride by Mona Hodgson is the follow-up novel to her Two Brides Too Many. Ida Sinclair joins her sisters in Cripple Creek, Colorado with aspirations of becoming a successful businesswoman. Thinking she has no time (or need) for men, she is surprised when two eligible bachelors begin vying for her attention.
Hodgson produces a great historical fiction. The town of Cripple Creek is interesting the men and women who live there are true characters. Mona writes each character in such a way that they seem to be real people. I also enjoyed that although this is the second novel in the series, it truly stands alone. I loved the characters of Kat and Nell and look forward to reading their story in Two Brides Too Many. My only complaint was that the romantic connections in this book seemed a bit forced. However, the rest of the book made up for it. This is a charming series and I look forward to the final installment.

Today I'm reviewing TOO RICH FOR A BRIDE by Mona Hodgson, published by Waterbrook. This is the second book in the Cripple Creek series.
In the 1890's, women were expected to marry, keep a fine home, and raise children. But some women have always fought against the mold and Hodgson's heroine, Ida Sinclair, is one of those. After taking business courses, she aspires to be a successful businesswoman in the east. After a nearly disastrous false start that leaves her disillusioned about working for a man, she comes west to join her sisters in Colorado, where she lands a job with a somewhat notorious businesswoman there whose success seems based on an 1890's version of insider trading.
Tucker Raines is a former traveling preacher who must give up his ministry to take on his family's ice business when his father falls ill with TB. Tucker's father has always been harsh to him because he chose the ministry, which causes Tucker hidden pain. He is taken with Ida, but hesitant because she seems to prefer material goals over marriage and family. And then there's the too-smooth businessman wooing her.
The story of how Ida learns that love is really what is valuable in life, how she gains discernment into character, and how Tucker regains his true calling and the love and respect of his father is a tender, heartwarming story. I had not read the first book in the series, TWO BRIDES TOO MANY, but I'm thinking I need to!

Ida Sinclair, resolved to prove her merit as a businesswoman, took her determination to Cripple Creek, Colorado. Faced with the bias and discrimination of the late 1800s, her success was surprising. Her sisters and others were supportive, but could foresee possible negative consequences. With a firm focus and dedication she achieves greater success than she expected…. But at what cost?
The story is dramatically written, with wonderful descriptions, a variety of believable characters, and a sweet story. To Rich for a Bride will touch your emotions and fill your heart with a smile.

I was expecting a great read from this third book and wasn't disappointed. It not only had a love story, but a mystery. It was one of those books you didn't want to put down. Colleen Coble is one of my favorite authors.

It's okay to want to be a business woman more than a wife, right? For Ida, that's all she wants. Her sister's want so much more for her, like for her to find a husband. They decide to take it upon themselves to find her a man.
Ida finds a mentor to help her in the male-dominated business world of the stock market. Mollie O'Bryan teaches her all she needs to know. However, what she doesn't teach her is what to do when not just 1, but 2, men start to show her attention. Will she fall for one of them or will she decide that she is indeed too rich to be a bride and that her joy is found in being a business woman and not as a wife.
This book is the second in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek Series. Having not read the first book, I still found this book to be a good read and now want to read the first book. It was a light-hearted book that makes for a fun summer book.

I had a very difficult time getting into Too Rich for a Bride. I just couldn’t connect with Ida. Right from the very start, she rubbed me the wrong way.
I’m old fashioned. I don’t have anything wrong with women working or doing well in business, but women with the a-woman-can-do-anything-a-man-can-do-and-probably-better attitude turns me off.
Never good when the main character annoys you. Hard to get past that.
I read Mona’s first book in this series, Two Brides Too Many, quite awhile ago, but couldn’t remember Mollie O’Bryan’s character. This also made me feel lost, as I really wasn’t sure what her ‘business’ was. So…I had no idea what in the world Ida was doing every day.
I just felt like I was forcing myself to turn the next page, and only got about 2/3 of the way through the book.
Just because I struggled to like the main character, doesn’t mean you wouldn’t enjoy Too Rich for a Bride. The book has a nice western feel, along with a likeable landlady, two protective sisters, and two men vying for Ida’s hand – which one is the good guy, bad guy, right guy, wrong guy for her? All the right components for a great story – it just fell flat for me.

Ida Sinclair has no intention to find a husband when she moves to Cripple Creek, the town where her sisters, Nell and Kat, discovered true love and settled down to start their families. Instead, Ida is keen to make a name for herself in the business world, working for the infamous Mollie O'Bryan. Mollie might have some practices that Ida's family disapproves of, but Ida is impressed by her achievements in a profession dominated by men. But despite her attempts to immerse herself in the world of business and to ignore the matchmaking efforts of her sisters and her landlady, Ida finds herself torn between the affections of two men. Colin Wagner, a successful lawyer, and Tucker Raines, a preacher who has returned to Cripple Creek to help out with his ailing father's business, find themselves drawn to the feisty, independent Ida. But will Ida tear herself away from her new job long enough to notice the attentions of these two men? And if she does, how will she know which man is right for her?
Although I've not yet had the chance to read the first book in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series, I can honestly say that this is a series you can jump right into and feel at home with. Mona has an excellent way of creating a family unit around her main character, not only with Ida's sisters and their husbands, but also the wonderful matchmaking landlady, Miss Hattie, who became a second mother to the girls when they moved to Cripple Creek, and eventually Tucker Raines. At the end of the book we briefly meet the youngest Sinclair sister, Vivian, and Tucker's sister, Willow, who I hope will feature in the next book in the series. These are definitely characters that you don't want to leave after one book, and I may even go back and read Two Brides Too Many.
While I loved the cast of characters in this book, I have to say that the plot wasn't the strongest one I'd encountered in a historical romance. Ida's desire to be a businesswoman was definitely unique, and I loved that Mona showed her readers that you can have both a career and a family. I have to admit that I really have no idea how stocks work, so I was slightly lost during the sections where Ida and Mollie discussed their work. There was a sense of mystery surrounding Mollie and her work and her relationship with Colin Wagner, and although I was happy with the outcome of this little mystery the climax came very suddenly and almost out of nowhere, and left me feeling that there hadn't been enough of a build up to it. Although I realise that the mystery was essential in Ida choosing between her two beaus, it seemed to get side-lined slightly in order to focus on the romance.
Like most romance readers, I could figure out who Ida was going to choose from very early on in the book, but this didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story. I loved seeing the relationship between Ida and Tucker developing, and their difficulties in overcoming the boundaries that they were certain were between them. I actually feel that I related to Tucker a lot more than Ida, and maybe this is because I'm not so confident and career-driven as Ida is. Tucker also had an interesting back-story, which gently unfolded as the plot developed. I did find the conclusion of Tucker's problems with his family to be a bit sudden and perhaps a bit too convenient, but otherwise I'd have to say that he was my favourite character in the whole book.
Too Rich for a Bride isn't one of my favourites out of the historical romances I've read so far this year, but it's definitely a sweet, enjoyable read. As this is only Mona's second addition to the world of historical romances, I can definitely see her writing improving in the future and maybe even coming to rival some of the stars of the genre. If you're a fan of historical novels set in the era of westward expansion, but wish your heroines were a bit more self-sufficient and interested in more than just romance and babies, then Too Rich for a Bride is definitely one to check out. 7/10

This was the second in a series (her first Two Brides Too Many), but stood alone pretty well. I would like to read the first one now though.
Ida is the eldest of 4 girls and is joining 2 of her sisters in Cripple Creek, Colorado to work for the successful Mollie O'Bryan (a real historic person). She is not looking for love, but wanting to prove herself as a business woman in the early 1900's.
As you can imagine, she is faced with lots of trials, mostly involving men wanting her out of the business and two men pursuing her heart. The author does a good job of keeping you interested to the end.

I just finished reading this book by Mona Hodgson. I was immersed in the story with the first chapter. It is a shorter book and I finished in within 2 days. Ida is the eldest of 4 girls and is joining 2 of her sisters in Cripple Creek, Colorado. This is not what she had planned to do, as she was hoping to go to New York to be a business gal. Romance was not part of her plan, but surprisingly enough, she has two men pursuing her. One who doesn’t believe he is good enough for Ida, and the other will help her climb the business ladder. Just when you feel you know exactly how the book is going to end, we get some shocks and twists. Does love mix with a business woman’s goals?

Having never read anything by Mona Hodgson before, I was excited to read and review her book Too Rich for a Bride. This book is the second in The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series. I am eagerly looking forward to going back to read book 1 and then, eventually, book 3.
This story focuses on the oldest sister, Ida. Unlike her sisters who like to focus on marriage and would like to matchmake for Ida, Ida is focused on being a businesswoman. She moves to Cripple Creek, Colorado to work for the successful Mollie O'Bryan. However, various family members have some concerns with some of Mollie's business practices. Added to that complication is that there are two men pursing Ida: a traveling preacher and a successful lawyer. Ida eventually comes to a crossroad and has to decide what her heart truly wants...and, more importantly, what God wants for her.
I loved this historical fictional romance. The actual moral character of the characters in this story takes center stage--not the characters' looks or their physical appeal. I found that refreshing, as I can't find that quality in books as often as I would like.
I highly recommend this book and this author.

The Sinclair Sisters are back! In this second installment of the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek, oldest sister Ida joins her two younger sisters, Kat and Nell, in the mining town of Cripple Creek, Colorado.
Ida has just graduated from the Merton School of Business and seeks to join infamous businesswoman Mollie O’Bryan in her stenography firm. Ida applies for the job and gets it, but quickly realizes that the position comes with much controversy.
Two new men are introduced into the storyline and they both show an interest in a relationship with Ida. Tucker Raines is a traveling preacher that has come to Cripple Creek to help out his ailing father by running the family ice business. Colin Wagner is a lawyer and also a business associate of Mollie O’Bryan. It turns out that neither man is all that he appears to be on the surface. Ida struggles to sort out who is sincere and who is not.
All of the beloved characters from the first book are back. Hattie and her boarding house again play a central role. Boney and his mysteriously amazing ways of being in the right place at the right time again play a part. The story of Kat, Nell and their new husbands continues.
I happen to follow this author on facebook so I know that book three is in the publishing process and book four has just begun the writing process. All I can say is write and produce faster, because we need to know how the fourth sister Vivian makes her way to Cripple Creek and reunites with her beloved sisters!

A good book when you need a break

This book is the second in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek Series. I have not read the first book in this series and was delighted to find that Too Rich For a Bride could stand alone. Ms. Hodgson does an excellent job and giving you necessary information for the story to flow on its own while creating interest in the previous book.
Ida Sinclair desires to be a success in the business world which was viewed as acceptable during her time. In spite of harsh events that could have halted her endeavor, she preservers and continues toward her goal.
Life brings her to live in town with her sisters and she encounters two gentlemen that express interest in her; a lawyer and a traveling preacher. We are instantly drawn to the traveling preacher as we see the struggles he has faced in recent years and how his faith in God brings him through. And the lawyer, while a gentleman, leaves some doubt lingering in your mind.
Ida resists her attraction to focus on her success. She quickly learns that success in business comes at a price. Is it a price she is willing to pay?
I found this a quick, enjoyable read. I think it would have been better if it was a bit longer so the characters and storyline could have been developed a bit more. It ended too quickly and some aspects of the story seemed a bit stilted. Overall, it was a great read that makes for an enjoyable afternoon.

Mona Hodgson does an excellent job of portraying the difficulty women had in pursuing and receiving acceptance and respect in business at the turn of the century 1900. The reader is drawn into Ida’s dream for big business…the prejudices she faces from her friends, family , even acquaintances – both male and female. But Ida’s time is not only taken up with convincing her loved ones that she is learning business, and doing a good job, but also making a name for herself. Is it the fact that she is a successful business woman or how she acquired it that has people talking? Or whom she is associating with?
The story and characters are well formed, in depth and the reader is drawn into the lives of 1896. Struggle with Ida as she (and you) determine what the priorities should be. Look to those you love around you for the help that is only as far away as you make them.
A great book – although a bit of an ‘escape’ type of book (no deep suspense) it made me re-examine what I thought was important.
Although Too Rich For a Bride is the second book in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series, it can also stand alone. I will want to read the first book in the series, and since there is another sister Vivian, I think we can look forward to a third book!

Although I can not say that this book is the best - or even among the best - that I have read, I really can't say that I found anything objectable within in terms of beliefs, other than a questionable streak of feminism - and, if I am remembering correctly, some premarital kissing.
If you are looking for a light, rather predictable, romance-ish story, then this book is for you. However, if you do not enjoy those types of books, then I doubt that you will at all enjoy this book.
I really don't have much more to say about this one. I give Too Rich for a Bride 5 out of 10 stars. ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Too Rich for a Bride is the second book in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series. I didn't know that this book was a series (the only note of it being a series is on the back of the book in smaller font)- so I was a bit confused at first. The book was enjoyable. I found the character to be a little more unique than other Christian historical fiction. I can't say I have ever read one about the stock market before. One of the lesser characters in this book was named Mollie O'Bryan.... for some reason- I couldn't stop thinking of "Unisinkable Mollie Brown"- I am curious if the author knew their names and personalities were so similar?
This book was enjoyable- but it did lack in character development. I finished the book in an afternoon, and while it was enjoyable- I can't say it is memorable. I read it yesterday and am already having trouble recalling details about the book.

This new novel by Mona Hodgson is completely captivating! Too Rich for a Bride is the second book in The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek.
Two of the Sinclair sisters, Kat and Nell, are already living in the growing mining town of Cripple Creek, Colorado. They have each found the loves of their lives, and want only for the rest of their family to move to Colorado. Ida is more concerned with being a businesswoman, than with falling in love. Ida realizes that her best chance for acceptance in the business world is to move to Colorado, where things are not as staid as that of Maine. When she learns that there is a very successful businesswoman living in Cripple Creek, Ida’s excitement grows with the probability of working for, and learning from, Mollie O’Bryan. After arriving in Colorado, Ida meets not one, but two, very eligible bachelors who are showing an interest in her!
Is the business world more important than love? Is Mollie O’Bryan an ethical businesswoman? Exactly what is she teaching Ida? Will Ida choose business, or her forever love?
I loved this book. As a history teacher, the social aspects of women entering the work place in careers previously held only by men, was interesting and enlightening. I would recommend this book to lovers of inspirational romance, history of the West, and anyone who loves a good romance chock full of conflict.

This book was so good I read it in one day! The pages just kept turning. My favorite part of the book was the “real” characters. Ida and Tucker (the protagonists) are flawed but lovable. They learn life lessons and react to situations like any normal person would.
So why just 4 stars? Well I came into the series at this book and I haven’t read Two Brides Too Many (the first of the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series) so at times I felt lost, like I was missing something. I did not really know, or have time to learn about the Sinclair family dynamics so their relationships felt hollow. This is probably because I haven’t read book one. I know series books go together but I much prefer the ones where each book can stand alone from the others.
Despite feeling left out occasionally this is still a wonderful book and I’m looking forward to reading book one and book three (when it comes out).

Too Rich For A Bride by Mona Hodgson was a great historical fiction book about an independent, hard working woman falling in love when she never thought she would!
I loved the storyline of this book...I found myself relating to Ida, the independent woman, in my earlier days as a single woman! And then somehow that perfect man finds us and we fall in love when we were set on never falling for any man! :)
But just like Ida's story, there is a happy ending and the man accepts us for who we are and only strengthens our strengths and accepts our weaknesses!
Best of all, we are reminded in Too Rich for a Bride that God is the one in control and no matter what we have planned in our lives, God may have a different plan! I have learned that several times throughout my life (the hard way!)
I recommend Too Rich For A Bride for all women who love Christian romance fiction books and need a reminder that no matter what we have planned for our lives, God is in control and has the best plan in mind for us...and it might not be what we had in mind!

Ida Sinclair has now joined her Sister's....Two Brides Too Many...Kat and Nell in Cripple Creek, Colorado. She is a Modern woman and wants to be a Business woman...she is not interested in marriage.
According to the Author Mollie O'Bryan was indeed a real person, but her character in the book is fictional. Ida decides she wants to be just like Mollie, which includes insider trading in the stock market.
Two men want Ida...one is a successful lawyer Colin Wagner, and the other is the Iceman...Preacher Tucker Raines.
Loved the character of Miss Hattie...aka Matchmaker. What a loving wonderful woman she is and her heart belongs to God.
Can't wait for the next book in this series when Vivian arrives, also wonder if there will be more for Willow?
Love books set in the 1800's and learning about the life back then...never thought about the Stock Market being around then.
This is a good fast read book, you will have a hard time putting it down.
