Moody Publishers Proclaiming Jesus: Essays on the Centrality of Christ in the Church in Honor of Joseph M. Stowell

In the days immediately following 9/11, Joseph Stowell attended a special Chicago Prayer Breakfast. He was encouraged to learn there was much interest in God and spirituality among the attendees. He was troubled, however, by the subtle implication common among the speakers that day that Jesus, with His exclusive claims, was unwelcome. That, "given the broad diversity of religions in America, we now need to give up the 'traditions' that divide those of us who believe in God." Stowell left the breakfast even more determined to preach the centrality of Christ in the church. Proclaiming Jesus is a collection of essays, written by faculty of the Moody Bible Institute in honor of Dr. Stowell, that take up the message he proclaimed, making it clear that every area of church life and ministry is about Jesus.

Authors include:

  • Trevor Burke
  • Bryan Litfin
  • Mike McDuffee
  • Bryan O'Neal
  • Gerald Peterman
  • Gregg Quiggle
  • David Rim
  • Michael Rydelnik
  • Ron Sauer
  • Andrew Schmutzer
  • Michael Vanlaningham
  • Richard Weber
  • Kevin Zuber

What a testament to this man by his peers and those who
worked with him. What a priviledge it must have been to have known him in person and to have been 'at his feet'.
As a Christologist myself I just love reading and hearing truths about our glorious Christ Jesus not just the effeminate dishwater that is poured out of modern pulpits these days.
Oh may the Church return to teaching the TRUE Christ and His message of Salvation 'through Him alone'.

While I'm a HUGE fan of Joseph Stowell, it is the subject matter from of each of the essays that prompted me to make this purchase. I'm immensely interested in how the Gospel of Jesus is proclaimed and how each speaker/author addresses the centrality of Jesus in their discourse. I do not plan on simply placing this book on the shelf after I read it. I'm sure that I will refer to one or more essays in my own delivery of the Gospel. I think it is wonderful how this collection was made in honor of Dr. Stowell. In my opinion, he ranks up there with the best of the Pastor/Teachers. Buy it, you'll like it.

This book is a collection of essays by Moody Insitute Faculty on a wide variety of areas woven together by the need to emphasize Christ in these areas: The Church, Defending the Faith, etc. Some of the essays are quite challenging, not for the faint of heart or those with attention issues; not for those unaccustomed to study. All of the essays address important thinking commonly evaded or simply not presented in churches today. If you are serious about taking your faith to a new level of understanding and appreciation for the person and work of Jesus, this is a good place to begin: Excellent writing, very clear writing, very mature considerations.

I found that this book made an excellent gift to present to members of a group I participate with on a regular basis. It requires you to think, and helps equip you to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord in a variety of circumstances. I strongly encourage not only reading it yourself, but gifting it to others to help equip them in defending their faith.
