I'm a preacher's kid and have walked with Jesus most of my 64 years. In this book, Philip Yancey tackles questions that every thinking believer considers--where is God in the darkest of times, when it feels like my prayers are bouncing off the walls--and so many more. I felt SO affirmed reading this book, knowing that I'm not alone. I also felt SO assured that God is ALWAYS there--not in the way portrayed at times by the "super-spiritual" who would never risk the transparency that Philip Yancey offers in this book. I underlined the first time through. I'm journaling as I read it a second time. It's easily one of the most impactful books I've read in years. I'm buying it for a number of friends as a Christmas gift this year.

I have read several of Mr. Yancey's' books including this one and he does give some interesting thoughts. Being an ex-Catholic and now a very convinced Calvinist I do take some exception to his abundant reference to Catholic thoughts and philosophy. I do not know if Mr. Yancey is Roman Catholic or just extremely ecumenical. Any one who has read and agreed with the thoughts of Charles Spurgeon or has personally come out from and experienced the religion of Catholicism like myself will tend to question the biblical validity of some of the thoughts presented in this book because of this. I know Mr. Yancey believes we need the thoughts of other minds such as these but would he quote with such abundance the thoughts of Mormons or Jehovah Witness disciples? I doubt it
