Tolle Lege Press The Geneva Bible, 1599 Edition, Hardcover

The Bible of the Pilgrims and the Reformation reset in modern typeface, with minimal changes of spelling and pronunciation, and containing all its original margin notes.

Researched, compiled, and translated into English by exiled Reformers in Geneva, Switzerland, between 1557 and 1560, the Geneva Bible surely was carried aboard their three ships that sailed from England in December of 1606. The New England Pilgrims likewise relied on the Geneva Bible for comfort and strength on their 66-day voyage aboard the Mayflower in 1620, and were even more dependent upon it as they wrote the Mayflower Compact, a document unique in world history and the first constitutional government in the western hemisphere.

I don't believe this translation was ever meant to be forgotten in history. It is up to us to bring back the Geneva Bible. This translation is as good if not better than the authorized King James version. It's language is simple, easy to understand for the common man, although too plain for some people's taste. I do not mind that Jesus words are in black or that there are no fancy gold leafed pages. That's what highlighters are for. The text is slightly on the small side but it's worth getting used to. This Bible is not only a historical document. I try to read from this Bible every day. In my opinion, it's worth the extra money to go with this leather bound edition versus the hard cover.

I am amazed by the insight of the early settlers and their scriptural analogies. I find it fascinating how some of the ways we look at scripture has morphed over the years. I have always been curious about words and their usage over time and this interpretation along with the notes just delights me at every turn. Wonderful addition to my reference library.

Receiving this Geneva bible is like holding part of our Nation's history. I look forward to using it as a tool of comparison between what our forefathers used and what we have today.

The 2006 Tolle Lege Press edition of the 1599 Geneva Bible fills a sizeable hole in the Christian literature for both practitioners and scholars alike. Heretofore, locating and studying Geneva Bibles was essentially limited to a few dedicated scholars. This edition faithfully retains the text and structure of the original manuscript with only minor spelling and word changes to match contemporary grammar and word definitions, and these are noted. The Apocryphal books of the original are included on a CD--a practical compromise for modern readers. It will be a valuable addition to the libraries of serious Christians and post-Reformation historians, as well as those who appreciate the grace of earlier texts.

It is a very interesting read, although the comments at the bottom are a little distracting..it’s cool...and I am enjoying reading it..I do compare back and forth with my other Bible to make sure it is the same. It is a little harder to understand then the other one, but after all it is from 1599 and they talked funny.

It is fun to be able to read what people wrote about Bible verses in the 16th century. The Geneva Bible is nice, seems to be well-made, and looks good sitting on my religious shelf. I don't plan on using it for bible reading very often, it is too big to hold in the air while lying in bed, for instance, but it will be used when I sit at a table and study certain passages. I like to spread out 4 or 5 Bible translations and compare/contrast them.

I was surprised (pleasantly) by the size of this Bible; it is not huge and cumbersome, but easy to hold and read. Even though the font is only 6 pt, it is not difficult to read even with aging eyes. The print is dark enough to see comfortably.
The annotations could be darker, but they are still readable. I like this Bible better than the facsimile of it that I also own. With the facsimile, I need a magnifiying glass to read any of it, and it is so big and awkward that it is a pain to read. This Bible also has modernized the spelling to make it plain to understand- instead of the original spellings that are archaic and make it difficult to read. Then there is the disc that comes with it that is like icing on the cake. The font can be adjusted to a HUGE size that is easy to read, and the annotations also. I think they did an awesome job on this Geneva 1599 bonded leather Bible. I would buy it again and definitely will recommend it to others. Also, it came packaged very well and delivery was very fast.

I didn't realize how small 6 pt was, until I saw this. The font is VERY small. However, because I believe this Bible holds a faithful translation of the reliable Textus Receptus NT manuscript I will continue to use it. But that is no knock against Christian book, but rather against the product itself. I ordered by phone, and the staff was polite, helpful, and amicable.
