This book was recommended to me by a fellow Pastor that had taken a church riddled with conflict and turned it around by using this book as a Sunday evening study for several weeks. I read the book and was not dissapointed that I did. Every chapter was informative, inspiring and led to many affirmations of concerns I already had for my congregration and myself. This resource not only aided me in identifying issues and infirmities within myself and members, but laid out discussion questions for reflection to point us in the direction we need to move toward to glorify God.

An excellent (book) because many church members do not actually (know) what the church, as a whole, is seeking to do in having their regular services. Frankly, my goal is to build the church up with the Word of GOD and trust this will lead them to active service for the LORD.

Dever's book on the healthy church is excellent. Those who are new to the church or are looking for one should read it. Those who have been in the church for many years should read it too for at least two reasons. Firstly, we tend to forget or lose sight of many of the simple truths about the church which this book covers. Secondly, the book also offers some interesting insights that perhaps we've never thought about. Get a copy and read it, and then buy many more copies for your fellow Church mates. They'll be needing it as well!

This book is the first of a series of small volumes dealing with church reformation/revitalization produced by 9Marks, the ministry of Mark Dever, Senior Pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church. Together these volumes provide a wonderful resource for the pastor who knows that his church needs a return to the biblical pattern but needs help in getting there. "What Is a Healthy Church?" is something of a "Cliff's Notes" version of Dever's larger volume, "9 Marks of a Healthy Church." The pastor who finds agreement with Dever in this smaller book will want to pursue his larger volume , as well. Each of the books in this series should come with a "WARNING" label because the authors rip off the scabs of cultural tradition that have virtually robbed the Church of its effectiveness in being the visible representation of its Lord. Most pastors should expect to be challenged if he attempts to implement the "9 Marks" too quickly. But if you are ready to trust God and have your ecclesiastical world rocked, then start here. This isn't a comprehensive work, but it is sufficient to whet the appetite of the church leader who is not afraid to sacrifice his or his church's "sacred cows" and reinstate the Bible to its rightful place of authority.
