In Helpful Truth in Past Places Mark Deckard examines the teachings of leading Puritan writers/theologians who displayed exemplary understandings of human nature and were deeply skilled at applying Scripture in practical ways. With Scripture as their final authority, the Puritans were able to help others with their struggles and problems by grounding their counseling practices in a proper view of the sovereignty of God. In like manner, counselors today with the proper understanding of why people struggle and the provision God makes for these struggles, will be better equipped to guide those seeking counsel and direct them toward God-appointed solutions. Deckard's work is a welcome infusion of sound biblical wisdom brought to the front lines of counseling.

If a Christian helper thoughtfully reads this book, she will better realize the assurances and character of God to share with others. Mark Deckard summarizes the scholarly studies of the Puritans and gives us themes for compassionate, understanding and very intelligent counseling. It is a reference book for Christian counseling. It demonstrates how our personal God knows our hurting hearts.
