A solid, basic exegetical commentary rooted in the traditional evangelical Protestant tradition.
While working in Ephesus, the apostle Paul began to receive disturbing reports about the Corinthian church. These reports also contained appeals for guidance and direction. The first letter to the Corinthians betrays the nature of these questions and, of course, provides direct answers from an authoritative apostle.
Astute as Paul was, he was not content to provide simple answers. Rather, he intended to address the culture of the Corinthians church-the way they lived. Thus, he addressed five major areas:
1. True Wisdom (chapters 1-4) 2. Sexual Holiness (chapters 5-7) 3. Temple Attendance (chapters 8-10) 4. Behavior at church meetings (chapters 11-14) 5. Resurrection hope (15)
Providing answers to perennially relevant 1 Corinthians is an extremely important letter, and in 1 Corinthians: Holiness and Hope of a Rescued People illuminates the letter for today's audience providing timely exposition of a letter whose message still rings clearly today.
