Christian Focus Mary Slessor: What is it like?

Teach your children about the important life of Mary Slessor. Mary Slessor was a redheaded lass from Scotland who loved Christ and wanted others to know and love Him too---so she became a missionary in Africa. In Africa, she lived in a mud hut amongst the people and was shocked at the treatment of women and children, so she resolved to help the people. Written in a simple language that kids can understand and accompanied by colorful illustrations, kids will enjoy learning more about this important African missionary.

Do you like to introduce your young children to important men and women from Christian history? If your answer to this question is yes, then you should take a serious look at the Little Lights series published by Christian Focus 4 Kids. The latest addition to the series is Mary Slessor - What is it like? (book # 10). This book tells the story of Mary Slessor, missionary to Africa. The story is told at a level that is appropriate for children ages 4-7 (Read to 4-5, Read Myself 6-7).
The book begins with Mary's family having just moved to the city of Dundee. Mary's father is unable to find work, so Mary leaves school to work in the jute mill where they made rope. It is at some evening classes held at the mill, where Mary first learned about the continent of Africa, whose people would be so precious to her. Mary had a burden to tell others about Jesus, which is what would eventually take her all the way to Africa. Upon her arrival in Duke Town (Nigeria), Mary was distressed by the way women and children were treated. Once she learned the language, she went to Old Town and lived in a mud hut. Thus began the rest of Mary's life work of sharing the gospel amongst the people she loved. Mary's days were busy with teaching, offering medical care, giving wise advice, and occasionally rescuing abandoned children. In the midst of it all, she always found time for prayer. She would eventually move and live among both the Okoyong and the Azo peoples. If there was one thing that Mary was sure of, it was that all people are sinners and need Jesus Christ. It was amongst the Azo people that Mary died (1915).
Mary Slessor - What is it like? is a great book to introduce your children to Mary Slessor and her important missions work in the jungles of Africa. I highly recommend this and the other nine books in the Little Lights series.
Author Information: Catherine Mackenzie has written several biographies for young teens in the Trailblazers series as well as other titles for younger children. She lives in Scotland and has several nieces and nephews - a perfect practice audience!
