I’ve read lots of children’s books about the Creation story, but none quite like this one. The Creation Story for Children, written by Helen Haidle, tells the story of Creation, with passages from the Bible, and so much more.
The first part of the book starts with a Bible passage, such as Genesis 1:1-2. That is followed, on the same page, with an explanation of what happened in the Bible and how it relates to us, and a question (or questions) about the text. As in: “Try to imagine what it must have been like before God made the world. Nothing else existed, except God. WHO is God? The Almighty, All-knowing and All-powerful One who made everything we know and see. In the beginning, this God - the giver of all life – now began to work in the darkness.” Each text section is accompanied by outstanding, eye-catching illustrations. The book continues in this manner throughout the Bible’s story, from Genesis 1:1 through Genesis 2:3.
Then, there’s a section telling about some of God’s wonderful animal creations, such as the mouth-brooder fish, the hummingbird, and the hedgehog. An illustration of each featured creature is followed by a paragraph or two of description.
The last part of the book is about how God relates to children. This section gives assurances with a related Bible verse, all taken from Psalm 139. A couple of examples are “God Thinks of Me” referenced by Psalm 139:17-18 and “God Is with Me,” from Psalm 139:5, 9, 10.
The illustrations by David Haidle and Cheri Bladholm are vivid and vibrant and alive and exciting and just plain wonderful. The text is beautifully written and the illustrations complement the writing beautifully.
What I Like: Everything, especially the illustrations.
What I Dislike: Nothing.
Overall Rating: Excellent.
Age Appeal: The publisher doesn’t give an age group for the book, but Amazon says it’s for ages 4-8. I think this book appeals to a much larger audience than that, more like 4-12. The younger ones would certainly enjoy the illustrations, even if they don’t understand all of the text. The older ones will understand the text as well as the illustrations.

What a fantastic book. What I love: * detailed pictures. Lots and lots of details. My 4 and 6 year olds loved the details too. * each spread in the first part of the book contains about three verses from Genesis 1 and 2. In total, it is all but four verses of Genesis 1, and four verses from Genesis 2. * The Bible is quoted in King James Version, which isn't my favorite version, but it isn't modernized or dumbed-down. And my 6 year old loved that it treated him like a "big boy." * The commentary that follows the scripture is also not dumbed down. On the animals page, for instance, the text talks about how animals move ("stomp, hop run, jump, crawl, walk, and swim"). And it talks about the thousands of animals and a million kinds of insects. This gave my kids plenty to think about. * The second section of the book consists of a paragraph or two of information on twenty amazing creatures. Packed with facts, even my big kids (up to age 13) enjoyed these few pages. * The final section of the book takes you through Psalm 139. * My big boys (ages 9, 11, and 13) don't get bored reading a page or two aloud to their younger siblings.Disclaimer: I received this book for free from New Leaf Publishing Group. No other compensation was received.

As a former Parochial elementary school teacher and a current stay-at-home mom, I feel that this book could be an excellent supporting text when discussing the creation story with young children as well as when discussing several science topics such as plants, animals, and the senses. A few verses of The Creation Story are on each page along with a simple illustration followed by discussion questions. I really enjoy the discussion questions because they truly bring to life what the Bible verses are saying in a simple, easy to understand way. I give this text a 4 out of 5, only because the Bible verses are in New King James translation. For this being a childrens book, I feel that an easier translation would have been more appropriate. - Katie Courtney

If you are looking for a book to engage your child and tell God's story of creation, look no further. Helen & David Haidle have written, "The Creation story for Children" that captures the beauty of God's creation through pictures and God's word. Some of the pages are also fun to use as a "seek and find" because there are so many pictures used to show what God created on each day.I am encouraged that the authors stick close to God's word and not just another paraphrase of the Genesis creation account. At the end of the book, they go through amazing creatures, amazing senses, amazing shapes and colors in depth and show animals in each category. I really love this book and highly recommend you add this to your library. It will be the only creation book you will need to teach your children the truth about God's creation.

This book is absolutely wonderful. It gives a wonderful true to text of the bible story of creation, with dynamic art work. I am purchasing my third copy, and am thinking of purchasing extra's just to have on hand. Great work! I encourage parents and grandparents alike to purchase it for their young people.

I am the author of this book. My husband spent over 10 months illustrating it. We wanted to "create" an exciting visual presentation of God's great creation story in Genesis 1, and make the animals, fish, and birds actually look happy and excited! And we wanted to connect each child to this awesome God of Creation by adding in extra pages on Psalm 139 so they will understand more of what God means in their life: that God made them individually, is with them at all times, knows everything about them, hears every word & thought, numbers their days, thinks about them all the time, and has a special purpose for their lives. I really enjoyed writing this book and I pray it will bless all the children (and parents) who read it.
